The DEWALT DCD1007B, Milwaukee M18 FUEL 2904-20, and Makita XPH14Z and GPH01Z are manufacturer-documented options, but the published figures here do not establish a winner in a matched independent test.
How to choose a high-power cordless drill
Match the drill to the work before comparing models. Large auger holes in framing, drilling metal, setting masonry anchors, and repeated fastening place different demands on a tool. Check chuck capacity, speed settings, hammer mode, length and weight, side-handle arrangement, control features, and the battery system you already own.
- Wood framing and large holes: Look for a suitable speed range and a side handle to help manage reaction force when a bit binds.
- Metal drilling: Choose a speed appropriate to the bit and material, and use bits compatible with the drill’s chuck.
- Masonry anchors: A hammer-drill mode adds percussion for concrete or masonry drilling. Use a bit intended for the material.
- Repeated fastening: Consider control and handling as well as output; a high-torque drill is not automatically the most comfortable choice for every task.
Hammer drills are not interchangeable with rotary hammers for demanding concrete drilling. Choose the tool type for the scale and nature of the concrete work rather than assuming hammer mode makes a drill suitable for every job.
Manufacturer-published drill options
The specifications below come from manufacturer product pages or, for the Makita GPH03Z, an announcement. Torque ratings are not a common test standard across these listings, so the figures should not be treated as a direct cross-brand ranking.

What the torque and runtime numbers do—and do not—tell you
DEWALT lists 2,100 in-lbs as maximum rated brake torque under controlled laboratory conditions. Milwaukee lists 1,400 in-lbs, while Makita lists 1,250 in-lbs for the XPH14Z and GPH01Z. Because these are manufacturer specifications and no matched test across the models is established, they cannot by themselves show which drill performs best on a particular job.
DEWALT also reports up to 275 holes per charge for the DCD1007B, but that result is specific to DEWALT’s stated setup: a DCB2108 battery, 7/8-inch auger, and 1-1/2-inch-thick fir. It is not a general runtime promise; actual results depend on the material, bit, battery, and work conditions.

Control and handling matter with high torque
A bind-up can make a powerful drill difficult to control. DEWALT says the DCD1007B’s anti-rotation system senses excessive rotational motion from a bind-up and shuts the tool down. Milwaukee describes AutoStop control intended to prevent over-rotation during a bind-up; the 2904-20 listing includes a side handle.
These features add protection but do not replace proper handling. Follow the specific tool’s instructions, use the side handle when provided and appropriate, and maintain a grip and stance that let you control the drill.

- Ergonomic comfort grip handle provides ideal balance and tool control
- LED light with 20-second trigger release delay provides increased visibility in dimly lit spaces

Check the battery platform and kit contents
A tool-only purchase may require a compatible battery and charger, which can change the total cost and convenience of the choice. DEWALT’s cited DCD1007B page and Makita’s XPH14Z and GPH01Z listings identify the tools as tool-only. Milwaukee’s cited page lists a side handle and belt clip among box contents; check the exact seller listing for the battery and charger details before ordering.
Battery systems are platform-specific: confirm that batteries and chargers match the exact tool platform. A familiar brand name alone does not mean a battery from one platform fits another.
Rank #4
- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Which one should you shortlist?
- Already own DEWALT 20V MAX batteries: Compare the DCD1007B’s stated anti-rotation system and three speeds against the work you do; treat its torque and hole-count figures according to their stated test conditions.
- Already own Milwaukee M18 batteries: The 2904-20 offers hammer mode and lists a side handle in the box contents.
- Already own Makita LXT: The XPH14Z is the cited 18V LXT option; confirm what comes with the listing because the product page identifies it as tool-only.
- Considering Makita XGT: Compare the GPH01Z’s published features with your platform needs, and verify current GPH03Z availability and kit details before treating it as a purchase option.
Choose the drill that suits your material, hole size, work duration, handling needs, and battery system. The available manufacturer specifications support a shortlist, not a defensible overall winner.
