Match the claimed capacity to what you wash regularly. A larger drum can make room for bulky items and bigger loads, but the capacity number alone does not establish how well a washer cleans or whether a particular bedding item will fit.
Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying guide illustrates a large washer with a 6.2-cu.-ft. capacity and 17 thick, full-sized bath towels. That is an example for comparison, not a universal load guarantee. How do you compare cleaning, efficiency, and fabric care?
Use the performance information for the exact model rather than treating capacity as a proxy. Consumer Reports’ washer testing covers stain removal, energy and water use, fabric gentleness, noise, vibration, and annual operating cost. Normal-cycle time and the features you will use also matter; faster cycles or added options are useful only if they suit your laundry habits.

How do you make sure a large washer fits?
Capacity does not tell you whether the washer will fit through the route into your home or work in the laundry area. Compare the exact model’s specifications with the available space and installation requirements.
- Measure the washer’s height, width, and depth, allowing for hoses and any required clearance.
- Check door swing and access to hookups, and measure doorways and turns along the delivery route.
- Confirm that the laundry area has the required hookups and that the delivery and installation arrangements suit the appliance.

Which washer type and features should you consider?
Choose among front-load, high-efficiency top-load, and agitator top-load washers based on access, available space, preferences, and verified performance.
