For fertilizer on a small lawn, garden, or touch-up area, choose a handheld spreader by its spreading mechanism, capacity, and—most importantly—whether the manufacturer approves it for the material you plan to use. The ICL HandyPro is a hand-held rotary model for fertilizer and other listed granules; Chapin’s TurfPro 8706G uses a hand crank; and GARDENA’s Hand-held Spreader S meters material through a rotating dosage disc. These manufacturer specifications offer useful comparisons, not a test-based ranking.
How to choose a handheld fertilizer spreader
Start with the job rather than a universal lawn-size cutoff: the available product information describes handheld spreaders for small applications and touch-ups, but does not establish a square-foot threshold for choosing one over a walk-behind spreader.
- Check material compatibility. Fertilizer formulations vary, and a spreader suitable for one type of granule may not be recommended for another material. Follow the instructions for the exact model.
- Choose a mechanism you can use consistently. These examples include a hand-held rotary spreader, a hand-crank spreader, and a model that meters material through a rotating dosage disc.
- Consider capacity in the units given. Manufacturers publish hopper or container capacities in kilograms or liters. Those units are not interchangeable measures of how much fertilizer a hopper holds.
- Plan to calibrate. A dial setting alone does not guarantee the correct application rate. Product, granule size, walking speed, and spreader condition can affect how much lands on the ground.
Handheld spreaders compared
| Model | Mechanism and published capacity | Listed uses and limitations |
|---|---|---|
| ICL HandyPro | Hand-held rotary; hopper capacity listed as 1 kg for granular fertilizer and 500 g for grass seed. | ICL lists fertilizer, grass seed, and granular wetting agent as suitable. Its page includes calibration guidance. |
| Chapin TurfPro 8706G | Hand-crank; 1.6 L hopper. | Described for small plots, touch-ups, and small fertilizer or seed applications. Chapin does not recommend it for salt products, sand or sand mixes, lime, or pelletized lime mixes. |
| GARDENA Hand-held Spreader S (article 3255-20) | Rotating dosage disc; 1.2 L container. | The cited Australian product page lists fertilizer, seed, granulate, sand, and road salt. Warranty terms may depend on regional conditions. |
These capacities are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent measurements or directly comparable load quantities. In particular, a capacity stated in liters describes volume; the ICL fertilizer figure is stated in kilograms.
Match the spreader to the material
For fertilizer
All three cited product pages include fertilizer among their stated uses, but that does not mean every fertilizer is appropriate for every model. Check the spreader instructions against the fertilizer’s form and label before filling the hopper.
#1 Best Overall
- OPERATION: Adjustable arm support on this seed, salt and fertilizer spreader helps provide maximum comfort
- HAND-HELD SPREADER: Perfect hand-held fertilizer, salt and seed spreader for small yards
- CAPACITY: A seed, fertilizer and salt spreader that holds up to 1,500 sq. ft. of Scotts lawn products for year-round lawn care
- USAGE: These hand spreaders for lawns are great for year-round use to seed, fertilize, salt and ice melt
- COVERAGE: These salt, fertilizer and seed spreaders for lawns are engineered for smooth, even coverage
For grass seed and other granules
ICL lists grass seed and granular wetting agent for HandyPro, while Chapin describes small fertilizer and seed applications. GARDENA’s cited page includes seed and granulate. The word “granulate” is not a blanket approval for every product, so verify the specific material in the model instructions.
For sand, lime, or salt
Do not assume compatibility across brands. Chapin specifically excludes sand, sand mixes, salt products, lime, and pelletized lime mixes from its recommendations. GARDENA’s cited Australian page lists sand and road salt for its model. Use those differences as a reason to check the current instructions for the regional version you are considering.

How to calibrate a handheld spreader
- Read the fertilizer label. Use its stated application rate and any product-specific spreading instructions as your target. Do not transfer one fertilizer’s dial setting or rate to another product.
- Read the spreader instructions. Find the maker’s starting setting and any calibration method for your model. ICL says calibration is essential to apply the intended amount of nutrients.
- Measure a test area and keep your pace steady. Use the actual fertilizer or other material you intend to spread. ICL’s method uses a tarp, a starting setting, a measured area, and collected material that is weighed; adjust the setting and repeat until the amount applied matches the target rate.
- Apply evenly. Walk at a consistent pace. For rotary spreading, Milorganite advises overlapping coverage to avoid gaps, while ICL recommends an even pace and application in multiple directions for its guidance.
- Recheck if conditions change. A different product, granule size, pace, or spreader condition can change the application. Treat settings as starting points unless the manufacturer provides a product-specific setting for your exact material and conditions.
ICL gives named-product examples for HandyPro: Sportsmaster at setting 3 with two directions, and Gronamic Sport at setting 5 with three directions, each aiming at approximately 35 g/m². These are examples for those products and directions, not universal settings for other fertilizers.
Milorganite’s calibration page gives a separate product-specific example: 6.5 lb of Milorganite to cover 500 sq ft. That figure is an example for Milorganite, not a general fertilizer rate.

Clean and store the spreader after use
Empty leftover material after spreading, then clean and dry the unit as directed by its manufacturer. Jonathan Green advises rinsing and drying its hand spreader and storing it dry. It also describes settings as approximate because spreader condition, ground speed or pattern, and humidity can affect application rates. Use the care instructions for your own model, especially if its approved materials include products that can leave residue.

- Choose ICL HandyPro if its listed uses match your fertilizer, grass seed, or granular wetting agent and you want a manufacturer-provided calibration method.
- Consider Chapin TurfPro 8706G for small fertilizer or seed applications when a hand-crank mechanism suits you; avoid the materials Chapin excludes.
- Consider GARDENA Hand-held Spreader S if the rotating dosage disc and listed material compatibility suit your task. Confirm details for the regional version available to you; the cited page is for Australia.
The available manufacturer pages do not provide a comparable independent performance test, current pricing, or a basis for declaring one of these models the overall “best.” The practical choice is the one whose approved materials, capacity, and mechanism fit your job and that you can calibrate for the product you will apply.
