For submerged pool tile, start with the project specification and choose a grout whose current manufacturer documentation expressly approves the intended pool use. Epoxy grout is a well-supported starting point: a public pool modernization specification required ANSI A118.3 chemical-resistant, water-cleanable epoxy grout and named several products as examples. That specification is one project’s requirements, not a universal rule or proof that a single grout suits every pool.
What grout should I use for swimming pool tile?
Use the grout specified for the project, and confirm that its current technical data approves the conditions where it will be installed, including submerged use if applicable. A 2021 public school pool modernization specification called for ANSI A118.3 chemical-resistant, water-cleanable epoxy grout. Its listed examples were ARDEX WA, Custom CEG-IG 100% Solids Industrial Grade Epoxy Grout, LATICRETE SPECTRALOCK PRO Premium Grout, and Merkrete Pro Epoxy.
Those products are examples from that project specification, not a blanket endorsement for every pool, tile, or installation. The available evidence does not establish a controlled, like-for-like comparison showing that epoxy is universally superior to every cementitious grout. Treat epoxy as an evidence-backed option for pool tile, then check the selected product against the project documents and manufacturer instructions.
Compare before selecting
- Whether the latest product data explicitly approves the intended submerged pool use.
- Compliance with the grout class and standards required by the project.
- Compatibility with the tile surface and the specified joint dimensions.
- Immersion cure time and the temperature or site conditions attached to it.
- Exposure to pool chemicals and expected maintenance conditions.
- Working time, installation and cleanup requirements, installer experience, and color expectations.
- How waterproofing and movement joints are handled as separate parts of the tile system.
Can epoxy grout be used in a swimming pool?
Yes, when the specific product is approved for the intended pool application and meets the project requirements. The cited school pool specification required ANSI A118.3 epoxy grout, but product approval and installation instructions still need to be checked individually.
#1 Best Overall
For example, the ARDEX WA product data sheet states that its working time is roughly one hour at 70°F (21°C), and that jobsite temperature affects working time and pot life. It warns that some tile types may scratch or discolor and recommends testing a suitable area first. The sheet is hosted with a 2023 housing authority substitution request, so consult ARDEX’s current manufacturer documentation for up-to-date product instructions.
How long before filling a pool after grouting tile?
Use the immersion time stated for the exact grout and conditions on site; do not assume one product’s cure schedule applies to another. ARDEX WA’s cited product data says the grout can be submerged after seven days at 70°F (21°C). That figure is specific to ARDEX WA and the stated temperature, not a general pool-grout waiting period. Check current product instructions and project requirements before filling the pool.

Is grout the pool’s waterproofing?
No. Grout is one part of the tile finish, not a substitute for the pool structure or a specified waterproofing system. The cited project specification separately listed waterproofing membrane products, including NobleSeal TS and LATICRETE HYDRO BAN Sheet Membrane.
The National Plasterers Council’s Technical Bulletin #7 explains that pool watertightness involves both the shotcrete or concrete structure and the interior finish. Do not treat grout alone as waterproofing or as a repair for a structural leak. The project design must define the waterproofing approach for the particular pool.

Which joints should be grouted?
Do not fill movement joints with grout. In the cited pool specification, control and expansion joints were to remain free of mortar, grout, and adhesive; sealant was specified at changes in plane and tile-to-tile control joints. Follow the project details for joint locations and sealant, since movement accommodation is a separate part of the installation.
Which standards apply to pool tile grout?
Follow the grout standard and requirements named in the project documents. The cited pool modernization specification required ANSI A118.3 chemical-resistant, water-cleanable epoxy grout. Separately, the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance identifies ANSI/PHTA/ICC/NPC-12 2025 as its current standard for plastering swimming pools and spas. That standard’s public page describes cementitious interior-finish scope; it does not establish a specific tile-grout selection rule.
