Ozone can irritate and damage the lungs, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says it is generally ineffective at controlling indoor air pollution at concentrations that do not exceed public-health standards. Ozone is also used in water purification, but that does not establish that an air-cleaning device can treat water or make it safe to drink.
Why ozone generators are not a sound choice for occupied-room air cleaning
Ozone is a lung irritant, not a harmless form of oxygen. Inhaling it can cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath, and throat irritation, and can worsen chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma. The risk depends on concentration and exposure time, as well as breathing rate and pre-existing lung disease. See the EPA’s guidance on ozone generators.
The EPA says that, at concentrations that do not exceed public-health standards, ozone has little potential to remove indoor air contaminants and is generally ineffective for indoor air pollution control. It also does not remove particles such as dust and pollen, which contribute to many allergies. Ozone can react with chemicals indoors and create irritating or corrosive by-products.
The EPA states that no federal government agency has approved ozone generators for use in occupied spaces. An EPA establishment number, if shown on a product, identifies a facility; it is not an endorsement or a finding that the product is safe or effective.

Why a machine’s room-size guidance cannot establish safe exposure
A device’s actual ozone concentration in a room is difficult to predict from its advertised coverage. Output, room size, ventilation, open or closed doors, furnishings and other materials, outdoor ozone, and distance from the unit all affect exposure. Smell is not a reliable safety test: people’s ability to detect ozone varies and can diminish during exposure.
The EPA reports examples of ozone levels exceeding cited public-health limits under particular study conditions. Shaughnessy and Oatman’s 1991 study, as summarized by the EPA, measured 0.50–0.80 ppm in a 350-square-foot room with a large generator on its high setting. An EPA study from 1995 found 0.20–0.30 ppm in some home conditions. These are study results, not predictions for every device or room.

The EPA guidance also lists benchmarks from different agencies and contexts: the Food and Drug Administration’s 0.05 ppm maximum output for indoor medical devices; the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s 0.10 ppm eight-hour worker exposure average; the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s recommendation that 0.10 ppm not be exceeded at any time; and the EPA’s 0.08 ppm eight-hour outdoor ozone standard. These figures are not interchangeable consumer-device certifications.
Unoccupied-space ozone treatment is a separate, controlled use
High ozone concentrations are sometimes used for certain treatment jobs in spaces that are not occupied. This is not the same as running an ozone generator as an air cleaner while people are home. People and pets must not be exposed during high-concentration treatment. The EPA also says little is known about by-products left by these processes; its guidance does not establish a universal re-entry time. Do not infer that a room is safe to re-enter from a product’s coverage claim or the disappearance of ozone odor.

Choose a particle cleaner by CADR and room size
If your goal is to reduce airborne particles, compare a portable air cleaner’s clean air delivery rate (CADR) with the size of the room or area where you will use it. The EPA’s home air-cleaner guide recommends choosing a CADR large enough for the room. CADR is a particle-cleaning comparison measure, not a blanket rating for gas removal or water treatment. It does not establish that every product labeled HEPA is equally suitable.
For a building, workshop, or other space, size the cleaner for the area of intended use and consult its specifications for the particles it is rated to address. Do not treat a particle CADR as proof that a unit removes gases, neutralizes every indoor contaminant, or treats water.

Ozone in water treatment does not validate an air-cleaning device
Ozone has been used in water purification, but ozone chemistry in water is not the same as ozone chemistry in air, as the EPA explains in its drinking-water information. A generator marketed for air cleaning has not thereby demonstrated water-treatment performance, a particular treatment target, or drinking-water safety.
For a water-treatment unit, assess the exact device and intended use rather than relying on the word “ozone.” Check:

- Which contaminant or organism the manufacturer says it treats.
- Whether performance evidence applies to that exact model and configuration.
- Whether applicable regulatory status and product claims match the intended use.
- Whether the maker’s operating instructions cover the source water and use you have in mind.
The EPA notes that claims about killing or suppressing organisms can bring water-treatment devices within pesticide-device oversight; the claim and product configuration matter. The sources cited here do not provide comparable tests of specific consumer water-treatment models, so no model can be ranked or recommended as making water safe to drink.
