For a GE countertop microwave, start with the space available on your counter and the dishes you use most: GE’s comparison page lists three options—1.6, 2.0 and 2.2 cu. ft.—with different exterior dimensions, turntables and sensor controls. The larger models may suit bigger cookware, but they also take up more counter space. GE’s listed wattage is a specification, not proof of faster or more even heating.
Which GE countertop microwave should you buy?
Among the three models on GE’s official comparison page, the 1.6-cu.-ft. JES1657SMSS is the smaller-capacity choice, while the 2.0-cu.-ft. JES2051SNSS and 2.2-cu.-ft. JES2251SJ offer more interior capacity. GE lists a 16-inch glass turntable for the latter two. Choose by the actual counter opening and cookware you need to fit—not capacity alone.
| Model | Capacity and listed wattage | Turntable | GE-listed sensor controls | Approximate outside dimensions on GE’s comparison page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JES1657SMSS | 1.6 cu. ft.; 1,150 W | 13 5/8 inches | Preset mix varies; see the model listing | 21 3/4 in. wide × 17 3/4 in. deep; see GE listing for height |
| JES2051SNSS | 2.0 cu. ft.; 1,200 W | 16 inches | Chicken/fish, potato, beverage, vegetables, reheat and popcorn | 23 7/8 in. wide; see GE listing for height and depth |
| JES2251SJ | 2.2 cu. ft.; 1,200 W | 16 inches | Reheat, lunch/snack, dinner plate and breakfast | 24 in. wide × 19 1/2 in. deep; see GE listing for height |
Dimensions, turntable sizes, wattage and controls above are specifications listed by GE; they are not independent performance-test results. Consult GE’s comparison page and the relevant manual for full measurements and installation clearances before choosing.
Will a GE microwave fit your counter?
Measure the location’s width, depth and height, then check the model’s manual for ventilation clearances and the space needed to open the door. Countertop capacity describes cavity volume; it does not tell you whether the appliance will fit a particular shelf or counter recess.

- Check the manual’s clearance requirements and confirm the door can open fully.
- Compare the turntable diameter with the plates and cookware you intend to use.
Is a 1.6- or 2.0-cu.-ft. GE microwave better?
The JES1657SMSS is the 1.6-cu.-ft. option in GE’s comparison; the JES2051SNSS is 2.0 cu. ft. and has a listed 16-inch turntable. The larger model may accommodate larger dishes, but it is wider according to GE’s listed dimensions. Pick the 1.6-cu.-ft. model if its cavity and turntable suit your dishes and its footprint fits better; consider the 2.0-cu.-ft. model if its larger turntable is useful and you have room.
For still more listed capacity, GE also compares the 2.2-cu.-ft. JES2251SJ, which has a 16-inch turntable. Its approximate listed footprint is 24 inches wide by 19 1/2 inches deep, so check the counter depth carefully.

How many watts do these GE countertop microwaves have?
GE lists 1,150 W for the JES1657SMSS and 1,200 W for the JES2051SNSS and JES2251SJ. These are manufacturer specifications. GE’s comparison page does not establish measured heating speed or evenness, so wattage alone is not a tested ranking of how well the models cook.
What do the sensor presets offer?
GE lists different sensor-control labels across the comparison models. The JES2051SNSS includes chicken/fish, potato, beverage, vegetables, reheat and popcorn; the JES2251SJ lists reheat, lunch/snack, dinner plate and breakfast. Presets may suit common tasks, but the product specifications do not independently establish their accuracy or consistency.

What about older GE countertop models?
GE’s catalog includes several models that it explicitly marks as no longer manufactured. A listing or clearance offer does not mean a model is current production. If considering an older unit, confirm whether it is new or used and check the seller’s warranty, return policy and parts availability.

What the specifications can—and cannot—tell you
GE’s official pages provide model specifications and identify some models as discontinued. They do not establish independent comparisons of heating evenness, reliability or customer satisfaction. Current stock, prices, warranty terms and return conditions can also vary by seller and should be confirmed on the live listing before purchase.
