For homeowners planning a kitchen or replacing an appliance, measure the opening and door swing before comparing models, and verify current ratings and exact specifications for each candidate.
Start with fit and installation clearances
A refrigerator that cannot open fully or sit correctly in its intended space is the wrong choice, whatever its feature list. Measure the opening’s width, height and depth, then compare those measurements with the exact model’s installation requirements. Include room for the doors to swing fully, as Consumer Reports advises, and account for nearby walls, counters, cabinetry and traffic paths.
- Measure the finished opening, not just the rough space shown on a plan.
- Check the refrigerator’s listed depth and the manufacturer’s required clearances; cabinet-depth and standard-depth designs can project differently into the room.
- Confirm door swing and handle clearance against adjacent walls and cabinets.
- Before ordering, check the exact model’s delivery and installation requirements, including the route into the home.
Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying guide places French-door models at $1,000 and up. That is category-level guidance, not a live quote or a price for a particular refrigerator.
Compare usable storage, not just capacity
Manufacturer capacity describes total cooled space; Consumer Reports measures usable storage. Two refrigerators with similar headline capacities can feel quite different in daily use because shelves, drawers and bins determine what fits and remains accessible.

- Look for adjustable or foldable shelves if you regularly store tall bottles, pitchers or large serving dishes.
- Check whether door bins can be repositioned to suit the containers your household uses.
- Assess the freezer’s drawer arrangement and whether you can separate frequently used foods from long-term storage.
- Consider whether a temperature-controlled drawer would solve a real storage need rather than simply add another control.
Use model-level evidence, not a brand slogan
Consumer Reports’ refrigerator brand score draws on laboratory and survey data, but a brand-level result does not establish that every model from that brand is a top performer. Refrigerator makers serve different segments, styles and price levels. Breann Chai, who oversees refrigerator testing for Consumer Reports, put it this way: “There isn’t one best brand of refrigerator because brands tend to focus on particular segments or styles or prices of the market,” as reported in its Best Refrigerator Brands of 2026 article, updated September 25, 2026.
Compare independent ratings for the exact model and category when they are available, including temperature performance, reliability and owner satisfaction. The available Consumer Reports material supports the buying criteria and brand-level methodology, but does not provide a complete current model-by-model winners list. It therefore does not justify naming a single winning French door model here; check current ratings and listings before making a purchase.

Include energy use in the shortlist
ENERGY STAR says certified refrigerators are about 9% more energy efficient than models meeting the federal minimum efficiency standard. Larger refrigerators generally use more energy, so compare candidates of similar size rather than treating certification as a substitute for checking the model’s energy information. See the program’s refrigerator guidance, and confirm the exact model’s current certification and annual energy use.
Choose features around how your household cooks
Features are useful when they solve a routine problem. Compare the exact model’s configuration rather than assuming that a feature is included across a product line.

- Connectivity and special cooling features: weigh their practical value to your household against any added complexity; verify the feature on the model number you are considering.
How to compare finalists
Once a refrigerator fits the kitchen, use one checklist for every finalist so the comparison stays grounded in the same needs:
- Record the model number and verify width, height, depth, door swing and installation clearances.
- Compare usable refrigerator and freezer storage, shelf flexibility, door-bin layout and drawer arrangement.
- Look up current independent, exact-model evidence for temperature performance, reliability and owner satisfaction where available.
- Check annual energy use and current ENERGY STAR certification for the exact model.
- List the features you will use—such as dispensers, specialty drawers or connectivity—and confirm each on the exact specification page.
- Compare current purchase price alongside delivery, installation and service availability in your area.
What brand product pages can—and cannot—tell you
Bosch’s US product page lists French-door refrigerators in its 100, 500 and 800 Series and describes adjustable glass shelves, layered freezer drawers and ENERGY STAR certification across its French-door range. These are manufacturer product and feature claims, not comparative test results. Confirm the features and certification on the exact model before treating them as part of a shortlist.
