For U.S. shoppers, the soundest way to find an energy-efficient washing machine is to verify its current ENERGY STAR certification, then compare its EnergyGuide estimate, capacity-adjusted energy and water metrics, and fit for your home. Certification is a useful efficiency screen—not a guarantee of the lowest household bill or the best cleaning, reliability, or repair experience.
What makes a washing machine energy efficient?
ENERGY STAR estimates that certified clothes washers use about 20% less energy and 30% less water than regular washers, with about $530 in lifetime energy-cost savings. These are program-level estimates, not guaranteed results for a particular household; actual savings depend on the washer being replaced, how often you wash, settings, water heating, and local utility rates. Loading design can also make a difference. ENERGY STAR says certified front-load washers use about 50% less energy and water than top-load agitator washers. That is a category comparison, not a promise that every front-loader will outperform every top-loader under every pattern of use.
How to compare washer efficiency
1. Confirm current certification
Search the exact model number in ENERGY STAR’s certified clothes washer finder. The listing is dynamic, so check it when you are choosing a model rather than relying on an old product page or a general claim that a brand is efficient.

2. Read the EnergyGuide estimate
Compare each model’s yellow EnergyGuide label for estimated annual energy use and operating cost. ENERGY STAR’s consumer guidance says to “Check the yellow EnergyGuide label.” Its estimate helps compare models, but it is not a household-specific bill calculation: your electricity and water-heating costs, usage, and settings may differ from the assumptions behind the label.
3. Compare IMEF and IWF within the right category
The Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF) accounts for machine electricity, hot-water energy, moisture-removal energy, and low-power consumption. A higher IMEF indicates better energy efficiency. The Integrated Water Factor (IWF) adjusts water use for washer capacity; a lower IWF indicates better water efficiency. ENERGY STAR explains both measures in its clothes washer criteria.

Do not compare a raw IMEF or IWF figure without checking the washer’s size and loading configuration. ENERGY STAR certification thresholds vary by category. Its posted criteria, identified as current from April 22, 2021, are:

These are certification criteria, not a ranking of all machines. ENERGY STAR also has a Version 9 draft specification page; a draft does not by itself establish that new criteria have been adopted or taken effect. Check the live criteria page and Version 9 page for current status.

Choose a size and configuration that suits your home
Efficiency numbers are only useful if the washer works for your typical loads and installation space. Consider capacity alongside physical dimensions and access: ENERGY STAR certified products include different widths and capacities, stackable and under-counter configurations, and laundry-center or all-in-one options.
- Measure the installation area and check the required clearances, door swing, and access route for delivery.
- Choose capacity for the loads you normally wash, rather than assuming the largest drum is the best fit.
- Decide whether front- or top-loading access, stacking, under-counter placement, or an integrated laundry setup better suits the room.
Compare cleaning quality, cycle duration, noise, controls, service support, and repairability separately. ENERGY STAR certification addresses energy and water performance; it does not establish those other qualities.

Estimate the cost for your household
Use the EnergyGuide operating-cost estimate as a consistent starting point, then consider your local electricity and water rates, how frequently you wash, and whether the washer heats water. Check current rebates through ENERGY STAR’s product and rebate resources and confirm any local program’s eligibility rules. Delivery, installation, and removal costs can also affect the purchase decision. The published category savings do not predict what one household will save.
What “Most Efficient” means—and what it does not
ENERGY STAR’s “Most Efficient 2025” recognition was limited to standard-sized residential clothes washers of at least 1.6 cubic feet and required ENERGY STAR certification, energy and water performance, and a minimum average Total Cleaning Score of 85.0. Its stated recognition period ran from January 1 through December 31, 2025. The criteria are documented in the 2025 criteria; that expired designation is not evidence that a model qualifies for a later year. Check the current EPA list before relying on a current-year accolade.

U.S. Department of Energy consumer information says amended residential washer energy conservation standards were published by direct final rule on March 15, 2024, and amendments became mandatory for product testing starting July 16, 2025.
