It is closer to concentrated convection cooking than conventional deep frying, so it can reduce added oil without making every meal healthy. For a compact kitchen, Consumer Reports’ 2026 small-air-fryer roundup highlights the Cosori Lite CAF-LI211, Dash Tasti-Crisp DCAF260, and Instant Vortex Plus 140-3079-01; their measured capacities range from 1.7 to 3 quarts, which makes them poor assumptions for large batches.
How these air fryers compare
Consumer Reports’ 2026 small-air-fryer roundup is a useful shortlist for compact models, not a universal ranking for every household. Its measured capacity can differ from a manufacturer’s advertised volume, so weigh the amount of food you plan to cook against counter space and test results.

What to check before choosing
Capacity and counter space
Choose by the amount you expect to cook, not the word “large” or a maker’s volume claim alone. Consumer Reports cautions that usable capacity can be smaller than claimed, and crowding food can undermine the reason to use a basket-style appliance. The compact models above measure 1.7–3 quarts, so consider a larger appliance if you routinely cook family portions or batches.

Controls and temperature behavior
Look for controls you can read and adjust without guesswork. Consumer Reports rated the Cosori’s controls highly and the Instant’s excellent, while the Dash’s controls were less easy to use. Its Instant test also found a specific temperature discrepancy: 324°F when the setting was 350°F. That result is a reason to account for test performance, not a claim that every unit will behave identically.
Cleaning and useful features
Dishwasher-safe removable parts can simplify cleanup, but they are not the same as an independently tested cleaning score. Consumer Reports reported both a dishwasher-safe basket and high cleaning marks for the Cosori, and very good cleaning for the Instant. The GreenPan Bistro 7-Quart 360° Clear View Air Fryer is a larger manufacturer-listed example: GreenPan specifies a dishwasher-safe drawer and tray, 13 presets, and an 80–400°F range. These are manufacturer specifications, not comparative test results. Features such as presets, reheating, baking, and roasting are worth prioritizing only if you will use them; air fryers can handle tasks beyond fries.

Coatings and material claims
GreenPan says the Bistro’s nonstick interior is made without intentionally added PFAS. That is the manufacturer’s description of its materials; it does not establish a health benefit or support calling the appliance “non-toxic.” Compare coating claims carefully and keep their attribution attached to them.

It also does not eliminate concerns associated with high-temperature cooking. The FDA says acrylamide may form in plant foods during frying, roasting, and baking. For cut potato products, cooking them to golden yellow rather than brown can help reduce acrylamide formation; longer cooking and higher temperatures generally increase formation. Follow a balanced eating pattern rather than relying on a cooking appliance to make a diet healthy.
