Best Electric Lawn Mower: EGO vs. Greenworks for Different Lawns

The EGO POWER+ LM2206SP is the strongest premium self-propelled choice, while the Greenworks 80V 21-inch 4-in-1 suits flat lawns and existing Greenworks 80V owners. Learn how lawn size, slopes, batteries, deck width, mowing modes, storage, and replacement parts should determine your choice.

Best overall fit: the EGO POWER+ LM2206SP for buyers who want a premium self-propelled mower. Best push alternative: the Greenworks 80V 21-inch 4-in-1 for smaller, flatter lawns and Greenworks 80V tool owners. The right cordless electric lawn mower depends on lawn size, slope, grass density, deck width, battery platform, storage, and whether you mulch, bag, or discharge.

If you want one premium recommendation, the EGO POWER+ LM2206SP is the strongest documented choice for a medium-to-large residential lawn: it combines a 22-inch cast-aluminum deck, self-propelled drive, a 56V 10.0Ah battery, and a manufacturer-stated runtime of up to 70 minutes. For a smaller, flatter lawn—or for shoppers who prefer a simpler push mower—the Greenworks 80V 21-inch 4-in-1 mower is the better fit.

Neither is automatically the best electric lawn mower for every property. Yard size, slope, grass density, deck width, battery platform, storage, and whether you mulch, bag, or discharge clippings matter more than a headline runtime or motor voltage.

Best premium self-propelled mower: EGO POWER+ LM2206SP

The EGO POWER+ LM2206SP is the most capable premium candidate in this comparison when reducing physical pushing effort is important. EGO lists a 22-inch cast-aluminum deck, Touch Drive self-propulsion, a Select Cut multi-blade system, eight cutting-height positions from 1 to 4 inches, LED controls, folding storage, and a registered lifetime deck warranty.

EGO also states a maximum runtime of up to 70 minutes with the included 56V 10.0Ah ARC Lithium battery. That figure should be treated as a controlled maximum rather than a promise that the mower will cut a particular acreage. Tall or damp grass, dense growth, a low cutting height, frequent stops, slopes, blade selection, self-propelled speed, and battery age can all reduce the time available.

Greenworks 40V 16in Push Lawn Mower, 4.0 Ah Battery and Charger
  • [16" LAWN MOWER] - This 40V lawn mower cuts up to 1/3 acre with fully charged 4.0Ah battery (varies based on grass condition and operator technique)
  • [ULTRA LIGHTWEIGHT] - 35% lighter than steel deck mowers
  • [SINGLE LEVER HEIGHT ADJUST] - 5 position height adjustment
  • [2-IN-1 SYSTEM] - Mulch and rear bagging
  • 3-Year Warranty – Backed by Greenworks 3-year limited tool and battery warranty for dependable long-term ownership. Works with 75+ Greenworks 40V tools(trimmers, blowers, chainsaws...)—expand your cordless toolkit.

The model appears in EGO’s 2026 catalog as an 1100 Series mower supplied in one configuration with a 10.0Ah battery and 700W Turbo Charger. The catalog also lists a tool-only configuration. Confirm the package contents before comparing prices, because a bare tool is only a bargain if you already own a compatible EGO 56V battery and charger.

Choose the EGO if:

  • Your lawn is large enough that pushing a wide, battery-powered mower becomes tiring.
  • You have slopes or want drive assistance, while understanding that self-propulsion consumes battery energy.
  • You value an aluminum deck and intend to stay within the EGO 56V outdoor-tool ecosystem.
  • You want a 22-inch deck for fewer passes on open areas and folding storage for a crowded garage.

Do not choose it solely because of the 70-minute figure. A larger battery and self-propelled transmission can make the mower heavier, and actual coverage depends on the property and mowing conditions. The model’s specifications and runtime are manufacturer claims; they are not independent test results.

Best push-mower alternative: Greenworks 80V 21-inch 4-in-1

The Greenworks 80V 21-inch 4-in-1 mower is a compelling alternative for a homeowner who wants a steel deck, straightforward push operation, and multiple ways to handle clippings. The cited kit includes a 4.0Ah battery and charger, and Greenworks lists four-year tool and battery warranties on its product page. Verify those details for the exact package sold in your region.

The mower has a brushless motor, seven-position height adjustment, LED headlights, and four operating modes: mulching, bagging, side discharge, and turbo leaf pickup. Greenworks says its removable battery works with more than 75 tools in the company’s 80V range, which can make the mower a useful entry point into a broader outdoor-equipment platform.

Choose the Greenworks if:

  • Your lawn is relatively small, flat, and easy to push.
  • You prefer a steel stamped deck or want to avoid paying for self-propelled drive.
  • You need mulching, bagging, side discharge, and leaf-pickup flexibility.
  • You already own Greenworks 80V tools and can share batteries and chargers.

This is a push mower, not a slope-oriented recommendation. A push model may be entirely adequate on a level lot, but it does not provide the same assistance as the EGO’s self-propelled system. Also, do not assume a Greenworks 60V battery fits this 80V mower. Voltage platforms and connectors must match the manufacturer’s compatibility statement.

How to choose the right cordless electric lawn mower

1. Start with lawn size and mowing conditions

Battery walk-behind mowers are generally most suitable for lawns of about one-third acre or less. That is a starting point, not a precise runtime guarantee. A one-third-acre lawn divided by fences, beds, trees, and gates may require more time than a larger, open rectangle. Wet, thick, overgrown turf also consumes more energy than frequently maintained grass.

For a larger property, consider whether you need a second charged battery, a larger-capacity battery, or a riding mower. If the mower must return to the charger halfway through the job, the relevant question is not “How many minutes does it run?” but “Can I finish the property with the batteries and charging time I have?”

2. Decide between push and self-propelled operation

A self-propelled mower reduces the force required to move the machine, which is useful on slopes, with heavier decks, or when the operator wants to avoid repeated pushing. Its trade-off is energy consumption: the drive system uses some of the battery’s charge that would otherwise be available for cutting. Independent guidance from Consumer Reports specifically notes that self-propelled battery models may cut less grass on the same charge unless they use a larger or additional battery.

A push mower is usually the sensible choice when the lawn is small, level, and unobstructed. It is often lighter, mechanically simpler, and less expensive in a comparable product range. Self-propelled operation is more valuable when the terrain or mower weight makes pushing tiring—not simply because it sounds like a premium feature.

3. Treat the battery platform as a long-term purchase

Battery compatibility is one of the most important ownership decisions. Outdoor-tool batteries are generally proprietary to a brand and voltage platform. A Greenworks 60V battery should not be assumed to work in an 80V mower, and a battery from another brand should not be assumed to work just because its nominal voltage looks similar.

Before buying, write down:

  • The brand and voltage platform of batteries you already own.
  • The exact mower model number.
  • Whether the mower package includes a battery and charger.
  • Whether the charger supports the battery’s capacity and chemistry.
  • Which future tools—such as a string trimmer, leaf blower, hedge trimmer, chainsaw, or snow tool—use the same platform.

A kit with a battery and charger is often the practical entry point for a new platform. A bare tool can be more economical for an existing platform owner, but only after compatibility is explicitly verified.

4. Compare battery capacity without treating amp-hours as acreage

Battery capacity affects available runtime, but a higher-capacity battery is also heavier and more expensive. Runtime changes with cutting height, grass moisture, turf density, blade mode, slope, self-propulsion, operator speed, and battery age.

For a demanding lawn, a second battery can be more useful than a theoretical maximum runtime. It lets you continue mowing while the first battery charges, provided the charger and charging location are suitable. Store and charge batteries according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and avoid selecting a replacement pack solely because it appears to have the same voltage.

5. Select the deck width for the property, not just the biggest number

A 21- or 22-inch deck is a common residential size because it balances coverage with maneuverability. A wider deck can reduce passes across open turf. A narrower mower may be easier to turn around trees, landscaping, gates, narrow side yards, and construction features such as temporary access paths.

The EGO uses a 22-inch deck; the cited Greenworks model uses a 21-inch deck. The one-inch difference is unlikely to decide the purchase by itself. Handle layout, mower weight, wheel position, storage dimensions, and the number of tight turns on your property may matter more.

6. Match the mower to your clipping method

Choose a mower that supports the way you actually manage grass. Mulching returns finely cut clippings to the lawn, bagging collects them for disposal or composting, and side discharge is useful when collection is not needed. The Greenworks model explicitly lists all four modes, including turbo leaf pickup.

EGO offers separate blade configurations intended to optimize cutting or bagging performance. Read the manual and parts information rather than assuming that every blade configuration is included or interchangeable. A mower’s advertised deck width does not tell you whether it has the discharge chute, bag, blade, or hardware you need.

7. Check storage before purchasing

Folding handles are particularly useful when a mower shares garage space with construction materials, vehicles, bicycles, or other outdoor equipment. EGO lists folding storage for the LM2206SP, while Greenworks describes EZ Fold handles as reducing storage space.

Measure the available storage area with the battery removed and installed if necessary. Confirm whether the mower can be stored upright, whether the folded handle obstructs a doorway, and whether the battery should be removed for storage or charging. Compact storage is valuable only if the folded dimensions fit the actual space.

Maintenance and replacement parts

Battery power eliminates gasoline storage, oil changes, spark plugs, and many engine tune-ups. It does not make the mower maintenance-free. Keep the underside of the deck reasonably clear, inspect fasteners and wheels, clean according to the manual, and sharpen or replace the blade when cutting quality declines. Consumer Reports identifies blade sharpening as an ongoing maintenance requirement for battery mowers.

Always identify replacement parts by exact model number, not deck width alone. For example, EGO states that its EGO AB2200D blade set is designed exclusively for the LM2200SP and LM2206SP 22-inch aluminum-deck mowers. The set contains an upper blade and a high-performance lower blade; the high-lift bagging blade is a separate configuration. That distinction matters if you are trying to improve collection rather than ordinary cutting.

The same rule applies to batteries and chargers. Toro’s 60V documentation uses model-specific battery and charger instructions and warns users to use only the specified battery pack and charger. Before ordering any replacement, verify the mower model, battery family, voltage, connector, charger requirements, and the manufacturer’s compatibility statement.

Independent testing versus manufacturer specifications

Not every statement in a mower comparison has the same evidentiary weight:

  • Independent testing: Consumer Reports describes structured testing that includes mulching, side discharge, bagging, level turf, and slopes, along with reliability and owner-satisfaction data in its ratings. Its conclusion is that the best battery-powered mowers can cut grass as well as or better than gas counterparts while being easier to store and maintain. That is Consumer Reports’ testing conclusion, not a claim of testing by this article’s author.
  • Manufacturer specifications: EGO and Greenworks provide the deck dimensions, battery configurations, claimed runtime, cutting modes, warranty information, and platform compatibility used to describe the two candidates here.
  • Retailer information: Retailer pages are useful for checking the exact kit, price, review count, and inventory at a particular moment. Those details change and should be checked immediately before publication or purchase.

Be skeptical of unsupported promises such as “cuts any lawn,” “lasts all day,” or “beats every gas mower.” A mower can be an excellent fit without making any of those universal claims.

Which electric mower should you buy?

  • Buy the EGO LM2206SP if you want a premium self-propelled mower, have a medium-to-large residential lawn, value the EGO 56V ecosystem, and can accept that real runtime will vary.
  • Buy the Greenworks 80V mower if you want a push mower with a steel deck and four mowing modes, especially if you already own Greenworks 80V equipment.
  • Choose a different model within your current platform if you already have compatible batteries. Matching the platform can save the cost and storage space of another charger, provided the mower’s voltage and model compatibility are confirmed.
  • Consider a riding mower or additional batteries if the property is substantially larger than a typical walk-behind mower’s practical range or cannot be completed on one charge.

Check the current kit contents before checkout. The same mower model may be sold with different batteries, chargers, accessories, warranty terms, or no battery at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size lawn is suitable for an electric walk-behind mower?

For most homes, a battery walk-behind mower is generally suited to lawns of about one-third acre or less. Actual coverage varies with grass density, moisture, slope, cutting height, obstacles, self-propulsion, and battery capacity. Larger properties may need an additional battery or a riding mower.

Is a self-propelled electric mower worth it?

Self-propelled mowers reduce pushing effort and can be useful on slopes or with heavier machines, but the drive system consumes battery energy. A push mower is usually more efficient and adequate for a small, flat lawn.

Can electric mower batteries be used across brands or voltages?

No. Batteries are generally proprietary to a brand and voltage platform. Confirm the exact mower model, battery family, voltage, connector, and manufacturer compatibility statement before using a battery or charger.

Does the EGO LM2206SP really run for 70 minutes?

No. The advertised figure is a manufacturer maximum and actual runtime changes with grass conditions, blade mode, self-propelled use, slope, battery condition, and operator technique.

The Bottom Line

The best electric lawn mower is the one that matches the property and battery system. The EGO POWER+ LM2206SP is the strongest premium self-propelled choice on the documented specifications, while the Greenworks 80V 21-inch 4-in-1 is the more practical push-mower alternative for flat lawns and existing Greenworks 80V owners. Compare real terrain, platform compatibility, kit contents, and maintenance needs—not just voltage or advertised runtime.
