Best Economical Dishwashers: How to Compare Purchase Price and Running Costs

The cheapest dishwasher is not always the best value. Compare purchase and installation costs with energy and water estimates, kitchen fit, capacity and credible performance evidence.

The most economical dishwasher is not necessarily the cheapest one on the shelf. Compare its purchase and installation cost with the EnergyGuide estimate, water use, capacity, cleaning and drying performance, noise, and cycle time—and make sure it fits the existing kitchen opening. No single model can be named a universal best without current, local prices and comparable performance evidence.

What makes a dishwasher economical?

Think in terms of ownership cost, not sticker price alone. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) puts the principle this way: “An efficient product is cost-effective when the lifetime energy savings (from avoided energy costs over the life of the product, discounted to present value) exceed the additional up-front cost (if any) compared to a less efficient option.” DOE FEMP’s residential dishwasher guidance explains the lifecycle comparison.

For a household, the calculation depends on how often the dishwasher runs, local electricity and water/sewer rates, how long you keep the appliance, and any price difference between models. Include verified delivery and installation charges if they apply. An efficient model may cost more upfront, but its operating savings are not automatically large enough to make up the difference.

How much can efficiency save?

DOE FEMP’s October 2023 comparison estimated $94 in lifetime combined utility savings for an ENERGY STAR dishwasher and up to $136 for its best-available comparison, each versus a less-efficient model. These are federal-model estimates, not a household guarantee. FEMP assumed 215 cycles a year, a 15.2-year product life, electricity at $0.09 per kWh, water and sewer service at $5.20 per 1,000 gallons, a 3% discount rate, and projected utility-price trends. Your bills and usage may differ. See FEMP’s comparison and assumptions.

  • Slimline Design with Large Capacity : The Midea built-in dishwasher boasts a slim body that takes up minimal space and is easy to fit. It features a digital control panel with an LED display and has been thoughtfully designed to accommodate larger plates, pots, and pans up to 11 inches in height.
  • 8 Place Settings Dishwasher : With dimensions of 22.6D x 17.6W x 32.4H with adjustable legs, this under sink dishwasher provides a spacious and flexible interior for maximum dishware loading.

  • Heated Dry : Smart dishwasher ensures the best drying performance. The extra drying function offers a thorough drying performance (except for the Rapid and Self-clean cycle) with no additional towel drying required.
  • HI TEMP : The HYGIENE wash cycle maintains the water temperature at 136°F (58°C) max , which can tackle even the heaviest soiled dishes. It is also suitable for cleaning baby bottles and children's dinner sets.

The same 2023 comparison lists these energy and water figures:

FEMP comparison, 2023 Annual energy Water per cycle Estimated lifetime combined utility savings versus less-efficient model
ENERGY STAR comparison 240 kWh/year 3.2 gallons $94
Best-available comparison 200 kWh/year 3.2 gallons Up to $136

These are values in FEMP’s dated federal comparison, not specifications for every dishwasher carrying a particular label. The savings depend on its stated assumptions.

How to compare energy and water use

Read the EnergyGuide label

Use the EnergyGuide label to compare estimated annual energy cost and electricity use across models. Consumer Reports describes the figures as estimates; they are useful for a standardized comparison, not a promise of your household’s bill. Consumer Reports’ dishwasher buying guide also identifies energy and water use as factors to consider.

Use ENERGY STAR recognition as a screen

The ENERGY STAR Most Efficient 2025 criteria for qualifying standard-size residential dishwashers required ENERGY STAR certification, energy use of no more than 225 kWh per year, and water use of no more than 3.2 gallons per cycle. Those thresholds apply to the 2025 recognition year; they are not a claim about the 2026 list. The recognition excludes compact models with fewer than eight place settings and commercial dishwashers. Check the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient 2025 criteria.

Will it fit your kitchen and household?

Before comparing features, confirm the appliance’s dimensions against the opening, account for installation requirements, and check that its capacity suits the number of people and the kinds of loads you wash. A dishwasher that is too small for your usual loads may need to run more often; one that does not fit can add costs or make installation impractical.

  • Check the available width, height, and depth, along with the manufacturer’s installation requirements.
  • Compare capacity and rack layout with your everyday dishes, cookware, and household size.
  • Consider whether noise and cycle duration matter for your kitchen layout and schedule.
  • Choose useful functions for your routine; premium controls or connectivity are not savings by themselves.

Consumer Reports identifies cleaning, drying, noise, cycle time, and energy and water use among the factors in evaluating dishwashers. Use current, comparable performance evidence where available rather than assuming that a lower utility estimate means better cleaning or drying. Its buying guide outlines the factors.

How to set a sensible budget

Start with the total price you can verify for the appliance and any delivery or installation you need, then compare the operating estimates and performance of models within that budget. Consumer Reports reported a $855 median dishwasher spend in 2026, based on member survey purchases from 2023 through 2025. That is historical survey context, not a current average retail price or a recommended budget. See Consumer Reports’ under-$1,000 coverage.

Do not assume that a model below a particular price threshold is a good value without checking its fit, efficiency label, and performance evidence. Consumer Reports has also covered dishwashers under $500, but no verified current model ranking or test result establishes a specific low-cost winner here. See its under-$500 coverage.

Check local rebates before you buy

Some utilities offer rebates or other incentives for ENERGY STAR products, but eligibility and amounts depend on the local program. Check with your utility or use the ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder before treating an incentive as part of the savings calculation. DOE’s efficiency guidance describes these offers as local, not universal. Read DOE’s energy-efficient home upgrade guidance.

What to know about current standards

DOE says compliance with its 2024 direct-final dishwasher energy conservation standards is required beginning April 23, 2027. Its consumer page also lists a proposed water-use rule published May 16, 2025; that proposal is not an already effective standard. DOE’s dishwasher standards page provides the rulemaking context.
