The best seal is the one matched to the gap: fit an exterior door sweep beneath a door, weather stripping around movable door and window edges, caulk in fixed cracks, and repair or replace damaged insect screens. First inspect each opening while it is closed. Daylight or a visible gap points to a possible entry route; the repair must close it without keeping a door or window from operating normally.
Choose a seal by where insects can get in
Door sweeps, weather stripping, caulk, and screens address different openings. Using the wrong material can leave a gap—or interfere with a moving part.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends weather stripping around doors and windows, caulking windows inside and out, and installing or repairing screens as pest-exclusion measures. Its advice supports these categories, not a ranking of particular brands or designs (EPA housing-manager guidance; EPA Indoor airPLUS pest-entry bulletin; EPA guidance on brown marmorated stink bugs; EPA remodeling guidance; EPA Smart Pest Control; ENERGY STAR home-sealing guidance).

How to find the entry gap
- Close the door or window fully, then look for daylight or a visible opening along the bottom, edges, frame, and corners.
- Note whether the opening is beneath a door, on a moving edge, at a fixed joint, or in a screen. That determines the repair category.
- Check the surface and exposure before choosing a product. Measure the relevant edge or gap and follow the product’s fit and installation directions.
- After installation, close and latch the door or window. Check that the seal covers the opening without obstructing normal operation.
For bugs coming in under a door: fit a sweep
Use a sweep at the bottom of an exterior door when the gap is underneath it. Measure the door width and check the threshold and floor clearance before selecting a sweep; the available guidance does not identify one style as best for every door.

The EPA’s housing-manager guidance says doors that do not seal at the bottom should have weatherproof sweeps, an extended bottom, or a built-up threshold so the gap is less than 1/4 inch. That figure is housing-management guidance, not a universal threshold for every household, insect, or door. The EPA’s 2020 Indoor airPLUS bulletin says a sweep should touch the ground and extend the door’s full length. It should brush the ground without holding the door open. If a new sweep prevents the door from closing properly, correct the fit rather than accepting an unsealed or obstructed door.
The same 2020 bulletin cautions against vinyl sweeps in areas prone to rodent infestation. That warning is rodent-specific; it is not a general ban on vinyl sweeps for insect exclusion.

For gaps around moving doors and windows: use weather stripping
Weather stripping is for the perimeter of a door or window that opens and closes. Replace worn or missing material, and select a profile suited to the opening and surface. EPA guidance specifically recommends weather stripping doors and windows; it also identifies daylight around an entry door as a reason to address the perimeter seal.

Do not fill an operable edge with caulk, which is intended for fixed cracks and joints.

For fixed cracks: use caulk, not a moving-joint seal
Use caulk at stationary cracks or joints, such as a fixed gap around window trim. The EPA recommends caulking windows inside and out as a stink-bug exclusion measure. Choose a formulation compatible with the substrate and whether the joint is exposed indoors or outdoors; the cited guidance does not compare caulk brands or formulations.
Keep caulk off a sash edge or door perimeter that must move. For those gaps, use weather stripping so the opening remains operable.

For insects coming through a screen: repair the mesh and its fit
Repair a torn screen or replace one that no longer fits its opening. Inspect the mesh, frame, corners, and edges: an intact panel can still fail to exclude insects if it sits loosely or leaves gaps around the frame. EPA advises installing or repairing screens in doors, windows, and other exterior openings, and describes screens as needing to be “bug tight.” The cited guidance does not establish one mesh size or material as suitable for every insect or window.

Recheck repaired openings, then look beyond doors and windows. EPA materials identify cracks and openings in walls and other exterior openings as possible pest pathways. A sweep or screen cannot address an entry route elsewhere in the building; trace the problem to the opening before choosing another repair.

What “best” can—and cannot—mean here
The cited EPA and ENERGY STAR guidance helps match a repair category to an opening and emphasizes correct fit. It does not report controlled comparative tests of consumer products or establish a best brand, service life, price, or measured insect-blocking rate. Choose for the location, material compatibility, and normal operation of the door or window rather than relying on an unsupported brand ranking.
