The right choice depends on what you need cleaned, how your machine is used, and whether film or spots are the main problem.
Which dishwasher tabs performed best in Consumer Reports’ tests?
In its May 8, 2026 review, Consumer Reports named Cascade Platinum ActionPacs with Dawn the most effective detergent it tested among pods and gels. It reported strong cleaning and resistance to film, discoloration, and water spots. The finding applies to Consumer Reports’ tested products and conditions; it does not establish a universal winner for every household.
Consumer Reports also describes Finish Powerball Ultimate as an above-average performer, with strong cleaning and resistance to film and mineral deposits. The same review lists Presto! Triple Action Dishwasher Pacs among products tested, but the listing alone does not establish a particular ranking for Presto.
Consumer Reports says detergent performance varies considerably by formula. Its 2025 buying guide explains its approach to evaluating cleaning and residue, and reports that the best packs in its tests can clean better than gels. Treat those as lab findings, not promises about your own results.

How to choose a detergent for your dishes and wash cycle
Start with the problem you want to solve
- Food left behind: Compare tested cleaning results rather than relying on package claims. Consumer Reports evaluates removal of food soils, and its results show meaningful differences among formulas.
- Cloudy film or water spots: Look for evidence on film and spotting, especially if your water is hard. Consumer Reports assesses residue in very hard water, but a test result cannot diagnose the specific cause in your machine.
- Short cycles: Check the detergent format and your machine’s instructions. Consumer Reports cautions that hard-pressed tablets can take longer to dissolve on short cycles; pods in soluble film usually dissolve completely.
Understand the format
“Tab,” “tablet,” “pod,” and “pack” are often used casually for single-dose detergent, but the formats can differ. Consumer Reports distinguishes hard-pressed tablets from pods enclosed in soluble film. Follow the label for the specific product rather than assuming all single-dose units behave alike.
Compare cost per usable load
Divide the current package price by the number of cycles it can provide, then account for package quantity and discounts. Consumer Reports notes that dishwasher detergents span a broad price range, but its review does not establish stable current prices for each product. Check a current retailer listing before comparing costs.

Decide whether certification matters to you
The EPA’s Safer Choice program evaluates products against ingredient and performance requirements and calls for ingredient disclosure. The Safer Choice Standard explains the program’s criteria. EPA’s 2024 account said Blueland had achieved Safer Choice certification for almost every tablet in its product line, including dishwasher tablets. That historical account is not confirmation that a particular Blueland dishwasher tablet SKU is certified today, and certification is not a comparative cleaning ranking.
Load and use detergent as the machine and label direct
- Read both sets of directions. Use the dishwasher manual and the detergent label for the cycle, dose, and placement instructions that apply to your machine and product.
- Put the dose in the dispenser when directed. Finish instructs users to place its tab in the detergent compartment. Its guidance warns that a tab placed loose on the tub bottom can dissolve during prewash, leaving detergent unavailable for the main wash.
- Use the specified amount. Finish says to use one Quantum tab per cycle. This is Finish’s direction for that product, not a universal dosing rule for every brand or format.
- For hard-water spots, consider rinse aid as a separate variable. Finish recommends its Jet Dry rinse aid for best results in hard water. That is manufacturer advice; it does not establish that rinse aid is necessary or will resolve every film or spotting problem.
Consumer Reports says its residue assessment includes running clear dishes through 10 consecutive cycles in very hard water. That describes the publication’s test method, not a household-use recommendation or an expected result for your dishes.

Keep automatic dishwasher detergent separate from hand dish soap
Automatic dishwasher detergent is made for machine washing and is not the same as hand dishwashing liquid. Poison Control describes automatic products as available in powders, liquids or gels, tablets, and pods, and advises using them as directed. Store detergent in its original packaging, out of children’s reach and sight, and wash your hands after handling it.

What the evidence does—and does not—tell you
Consumer Reports’ rankings are useful for narrowing choices, but they are not a guarantee across different machines, water conditions, loads, and cycles. The available evidence does not establish stable current prices for the named products, a specific current Blueland SKU’s certification status, or a universal fix for cloudy dishes. Follow the label and machine manual, and use performance claims in the context of the test conditions described by the source.
