There is no dishwasher detergent that is universally safe for silverplate. Whether a piece can go in the dishwasher depends on its maker and model. Follow the care instructions for the exact item; if they do not explicitly allow machine washing, handwash it with mild dishwashing liquid, rinse well, and dry promptly. For tarnish, use a non-abrasive silver polish or polishing cloth labeled as suitable for silverplate—not a different dishwasher detergent.
Why the maker’s instructions matter
Silverplate has a thin layer of silver over a base metal, and care directions vary between manufacturers and products. Oneida advises keeping its silverplate out of the dishwasher, while Christofle and Arthur Price allow machine washing for specified items under conditions. Those permissions apply to the products covered by each maker’s guidance; they are not a general endorsement of dishwasher use for all silverplate.
Check the instructions supplied with your piece or the manufacturer’s care page. If machine washing is not expressly permitted, handwashing is the safer default. Ecover likewise advises handwashing silver and silverplate unless the item’s producer says it is dishwasher-safe: Ecover’s FAQ.
Handwashing silverplate
- Wash the piece gently with mild dishwashing liquid and water.
- Rinse thoroughly so detergent residue does not remain on the surface.
- Dry promptly with a soft cloth rather than leaving the piece wet to air-dry.
Avoid abrasive scrubbers and harsh cleaning methods that can wear or mark the plated surface. For detailed or patterned pieces, use the maker’s specific care advice.

If the maker permits dishwasher use
Follow that maker’s directions for the specific piece, including any cycle, detergent-handling, loading, and unloading guidance. Examples illustrate why the instructions cannot be generalized:
- Christofle: Its cutlery is described as dishwasher-safe except for Talisman, and it recommends handwashing before first use. Follow the product-specific directions at Christofle’s care instructions.
- Arthur Price: For its silver-plated cutlery, it recommends rinsing before washing and using sensitive or eco settings. See Arthur Price’s cutlery care advice.
When the maker allows machine washing, avoid letting dry detergent sit directly on silverplate. Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove warn that dry dishwasher detergent can cause hard-to-remove black marks. They also advise not washing silver or silverplate in the same basket as stainless steel. Their guidance is available on the Cove assistance page. Apply these precautions alongside—not instead of—the item manufacturer’s instructions.

Tell tarnish apart from cloudy residue
A cloudy film and tarnish do not have the same cause. Oneida explains that detergent or hard-water film can make silverplate look cloudy, while sulfur exposure causes tarnish. A rinse and appropriate washing adjustments may address residue; tarnish calls for silver care, not simply a different dishwasher detergent. Oneida’s care and use guidance also explains that its silverplate should not be put in the dishwasher.
Restore shine with silverplate-appropriate care
For tarnish, choose a non-abrasive polish, care cream, or polishing cloth whose label or manufacturer guidance specifically says it is suitable for silverplate. Lenox recommends occasional non-abrasive liquid polish for silverplate and cautions that dips or solutions may remove decorative oxidation, the darkened finish used to emphasize some details: Lenox care and use. Christofle recommends its polishing cloth or care cream for silver-plated accessories: Christofle’s care instructions. Follow the product label, including any rinsing directions for items used with food.

Why not use foil and baking soda?
Oneida advises against the foil-and-baking-soda method on silverplate because it can remove the darkened detail in a pattern. The silver layer is finite, so methods that remove material or alter the finish can cause lasting damage. Use a suitable silverplate polish or cloth instead, following its instructions.
