Good Housekeeping’s Cleaning Lab named Cascade Platinum Plus its Best Overall pick in its May 29, 2025 roundup. Its reported strengths include cutting grease and dried-on soils, leaving glassware shiny and spot-free, and helping with drying. The roundup lists 47 loads at 50 cents per load. Finish Ultimate uses a three-chamber pack and an enzyme-based formula. Good Housekeeping reports strong cleaning on stuck-on food and especially shiny, spotless results. The roundup names it Best Value but does not state a load count or per-load cost, so compare the current package price and count where you shop.

Alternative with hands-on comparison: Cascade Complete

How to choose a pod that fits your dishes and dishwasher
- Match the cleaner to your soils. If your regular loads include baked-on or greasy food, prioritize the reported results on stuck-on food and grease. The cited reviews report different test observations, not a controlled head-to-head ranking of every product.
- Consider spotting, film, and drying. For visible spots or film—especially in harder water—Finish Ultimate’s rinse-aid center is designed to help; Cascade Platinum Plus was reported to leave glassware shiny and spot-free and help with drying.
- Compare cost per load, not just package price. Use the actual price and load count on the package you are considering. The figures in the comparison are Good Housekeeping’s 2025 reporting and can become outdated.

How to use dishwasher pods correctly
- Put one pod in the detergent dispenser. Do not toss it into the tub: it can dissolve too early and detergent may be flushed away before the main wash.
- Keep the pack and dispenser dry. Handle packs with dry hands; moisture can make them start to melt, stick together, or burst.
- Run the nearest faucet until the water is hot before starting. This helps hot water reach the dishwasher at the beginning of the cycle.
- For a full load you can start promptly, scrape off excess food rather than routinely pre-rinsing. If dishes will sit long enough for food to dry, rinse them or use a rinse-only cycle.
- Store only a practical supply. Buy about as much as you expect to use in roughly two months; moisture and age can cause packs to clump or separate or become less effective.
Are pods better than powder or gel?
Pods and tablets offer convenience and often receive the most formulation innovation, but they are not automatically the best fit for every household. Powder is generally the cheapest format; gel allows dosage adjustment. Choose based on the amount of control you want, how you store detergent, and whether the price per wash suits your use. Whichever format you pick, follow the product directions and keep detergent dry.
