This curated list of 20 Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore colors includes soft whites and flexible neutrals for broad use, plus saturated shades for deliberate accents. Test finalists in the actual room before committing: daylight, artificial light, and nearby materials can shift how a color looks.
20 interior paint colors to consider
This is a curated shortlist, not a universal ranking. Sherwin-Williams describes its featured colors as “consistent customer favorites,” and Benjamin Moore presents its popular colors as versatile and timeless. Those collections are useful starting points, but a color’s suitability still depends on the room.

How to choose a color that suits your room
Start with undertone and temperature
Warm whites, beiges, and taupes generally sit comfortably with wood and earthy furnishings. Blue-greens and blue-grays create a cooler direction. Compare paint candidates with the floor, counters, tile, and upholstery that will remain in the room; a color that looks neutral on a small chip may read differently next to a fixed finish.
Account for light and exposure
Room exposure and time of day affect how paint reads. As a practical rule of thumb, a north-facing room may benefit from a warmer color, while a sunny room can often accommodate a stronger or cooler shade. This is not a guarantee: observe actual samples in the room. Benjamin Moore offers Colors by Direction guidance and recommends sampling; Sherwin-Williams likewise recommends visualization and testing samples because lighting can dramatically alter a shade.
#1 Best Overall
- Self-Priming formula - requires no sanding
- Mold & Mildew-Proof paint film - guaranteed for 5 years
- Resists dirt and moisture on film coating
- Finish is washable and scrubbable with soap and water
- Product contains a mildewcide to prevent the growth of mold and mildew on the paint film only
Match saturation to the mood
Soft neutrals and off-whites—such as Alabaster, Drift of Mist, White Dove, Simply White, and Pale Oak—are reasonable whole-home starting points. Sea Salt offers a softer blue-green direction. Navy, charcoal, brown, and black bring more visual weight; use them when you want a focal point or a room with a more enveloping feel.
Consider the room’s use and finish
Quiet neutrals can help connected public areas feel cohesive, while a more saturated color can define a particular space. As practical application guidance, consider washable eggshell or satin paint in busy rooms and reserve a stronger shade for a focal wall, cabinetry, or a room where you want a bolder effect. Color choice and finish are separate decisions: check the paint product’s suitability for the surface and expected wear.

- STAIN & SCRUB RESISTANT: Built to last in real spaces, Evolve helps resist marks, scuffs, and water spotting, so your home continues to look polished and well-maintained.
- DESIGNED FOR MOISTURE-PRONE AREAS: Formulated to perform well in bathrooms, kitchens, entryways, laundry rooms, and other high-humidity spaces.
Plan the contrast
A light wall with darker trim or furnishings can make edges stand out; a deep wall color with lighter trim can feel more cocooning. View the whole combination together in the room rather than choosing wall color in isolation.

2026 paint-color trends: useful inspiration, not a rule
Current brand selections provide timely options, but a color being named a trend does not mean it will suit every home. Trends can date faster than a carefully chosen neutral, so sample these shades just as you would any other candidate.
Rank #3
- Use for a variety of indoor and outdoor project surfaces including wood, metal, plaster, masonry or unglazed ceramic
- Water-based acrylic formula is low odor, resist chips and provides long-lasting protection
- Covers up to 120 sq ft and dries to touch in 30 minutes for quick project completion
- Semi-gloss finish minimizes surface imperfections, goes on smoothly and provides excellent hide
- Prior to application sand surfaces with 180/200 grit sandpaper, then wash with a degreaser, allow the surface to dry and apply paint
- Universal Khaki SW 6150, Sherwin-Williams: The brand describes this 2026 selection as a mid-tone neutral with a slight yellow undertone. Sue Wadden, Director of Color Marketing and Trendsight Team Leader, calls its warm, earthy tone an easygoing choice that works with natural finishes, crisp whites, or bold pops of color. Sherwin-Williams specifically recommends Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex for applying Universal Khaki.
- Silhouette AF-655, Benjamin Moore: Benjamin Moore’s 2026 Color of the Year is a rich brown-charcoal. The brand shows it alongside Swiss Coffee, Sherwood Tan, First Crush, Raindance, Narragansett Green, and Southwest Pottery.
- Hidden Gem, BEHR: In an article dated September 1, 2025, BEHR described its 2026 Color Trends palette as 20 shades spanning neutrals, accents, pastels, and cool mid-tones, led by Hidden Gem. The article also names Curtain Call and the prior-year Rumors.
How to test paint colors before committing
Paint chips and screen images help narrow choices, but neither shows exactly how a color will look across your walls in changing light. Benjamin Moore says sampling is the only way to really know which of its colors will look best in a bedroom, and its 2026 page warns that screen colors may differ. Sherwin-Williams also recommends testing large samples.
- Shortlist three candidates. Start with colors that suit your fixed finishes and desired warmth or coolness.
- Get physical samples. Use peel-and-stick samples or paint sample boards, following the paint maker’s directions. Keep the sheen consistent when comparing candidates.
- Place samples in more than one location. View them on different walls so you can see how the room’s exposure changes their appearance.
- Check them at different times. Look in morning and evening light, and under the room’s usual artificial lighting.
- Compare them with permanent materials. Hold samples near the floor, counters, tile, trim, and large furnishings that will stay.
- Choose only after seeing the full combination. Review the preferred wall color with the intended trim and finish before buying paint for the whole room.
Paint color and paint performance are different decisions
A color shortlist answers what a room might look like; it does not establish which product line will perform best on your particular surface. A BEHR-hosted reprint of Consumer Reports’ 2026 ratings, current as of January 2026, lists 20 rated interior paint models and includes hiding and staining subratings as well as overall scores. Those are laboratory ratings, not a guarantee for every wall, preparation, or application.
