There is no single deodorizer that reliably solves every cigarette-smoke odor problem. For smoke in the air, choose a properly sized portable air cleaner with mechanical particle filtration and a substantial activated-carbon stage for odor gases. For odor embedded in rooms, fabrics, or residue, clean those materials as well; an air purifier cannot do that work. Avoid ozone generators as an occupied-home shortcut.
Choose a solution for where the smoke odor is
Cigarette smoke leaves both airborne particles and gaseous chemicals that contribute to its smell. Odor can also linger after smoke settles onto walls, floors, furnishings, and washable fabrics. A product that addresses only one of these problems may leave the room smelling stale.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends portable air cleaners as a supplement or option where a home lacks forced-air filtration. For a broader smoke-removal plan, California Air Resources Board (CARB) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance help distinguish particle filtration, gas filtration, and residue cleanup.
How to choose an air cleaner for cigarette smoke
Size it to the room using smoke CADR
EPA’s buying rule is to choose a smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR) of at least two-thirds the room’s area in square feet. For example, a 300-square-foot room calls for a smoke CADR of at least 200. This is EPA’s selection guidance, not a guarantee that a particular cleaner will eliminate cigarette odor.

Check the smoke CADR for the specific unit rather than relying only on a broad “room coverage” claim. EPA recommends choosing a CARB-certified air cleaner for little or no ozone, and advises checking filter condition and replacement cost. See EPA’s indoor air filtration guidance.
Use particle filtration and activated carbon for different jobs
HEPA and other mechanical filters trap smoke particles. They do not remove the gaseous chemicals that cause smoke odor. For those gases, look for an activated-carbon stage and assess how much carbon it contains and how it is designed to work. CARB says larger amounts of activated charcoal work better and last longer; thin carbon filters may provide only brief odor removal. The CARB page reports charcoal quantities of 1 to 12 pounds among surveyed devices, but that range is not a universal minimum or a performance guarantee.

CDC’s wildfire-smoke guide likewise distinguishes particle filtration from gas removal: it says HEPA filters can remove lingering fine particles but not the gaseous chemicals responsible for smoke odor. It describes activated-charcoal or potassium-permanganate-coated alumina prefilters for gases and advises replacing them frequently. Because that guide concerns wildfire smoke, use it as general filtration guidance rather than evidence from a cigarette-specific product trial. Plan for upkeep and everyday use
Run a portable cleaner continuously on its highest setting where practical, as EPA advises. In smoky conditions, small-unit prefilters can become saturated quickly, so inspect filters and replace them when dirty or when they smell. Before buying, check replacement-filter availability and cost as well as operating noise; a unit that is difficult to maintain or too loud to run may be less useful in practice.

Clean the surfaces and fabrics that hold odor
If smoke has settled onto the room, an air cleaner alone will not remove it. CDC’s wildfire-smoke cleanup guide describes wiping exposed surfaces with dilute soap and water; laundering washable curtains, rugs, covers, and bedding; and cleaning carpets. These are general residue-cleaning principles, not proof that a particular cigarette-smoke cleaner works. Follow material-specific care instructions and choose cleaning methods suitable for the surface.
If the odor appears to come from ductwork, the CDC guide advises consulting a local smoke-remediation company or HVAC contractor. Persistent odor may have a source that household air filtration and routine surface cleaning do not reach.

Sprays and foggers: read the label, not just the promise
Odor sprays and foggers are product-labeled options, but their manufacturers’ claims are not independent comparative evidence. Fragrance can make a room smell different without demonstrating that the smoke source or residue has been removed.
Smoke-odor spray
Zep describes Smoke Screen Deodorizer as addressing stale cigarette and cigar smoke odors, with a residual fragrance. That is the manufacturer’s claim. The product page retrieved October 4, 2026 listed a case of 12 as sold out, so check current consumer availability and the exact product listing before relying on it.

Total-release fogger
OdoBan Pro describes its Odor Bomb as a total-release fogger for deodorizing interiors up to 10,000 cubic feet and removing cigarette and cigar smells. Its directions specify one can per 10,000 cubic feet, applying it to water-safe upholstery, carpet, and fabric surfaces, leaving the space undisturbed for one hour, then ventilating for 30 minutes. These are undated manufacturer directions retrieved October 4, 2026, not independent evidence of odor-removal effectiveness. Follow the current product label and safety instructions if you use it.
Why ozone generators are not a routine solution
Do not use an ozone generator as an occupied-home deodorizer. EPA states: “Available scientific evidence shows that at concentrations that do not exceed public health standards, ozone has little potential to remove indoor air contaminants.” EPA also notes that ozone is ineffective against many odor-causing chemicals and that irritating by-products may form. An EPA registration or establishment number does not mean the agency approves an ozone generator. Read EPA’s guidance on ozone generators sold as air cleaners.
CDC’s wildfire-smoke guide does not recommend ozone generators for smoke-odor remediation because treatment can create additional health problems. It says ozone remediation should be handled by a professional, in an unoccupied space, with the space left unoccupied for a designated period afterward. That advice is not an endorsement of consumer use; consult qualified remediation professionals rather than treating ozone as a household shortcut.
