There is no single best air conditioner and furnace combo for every home. The right choice depends on the home’s heating and cooling loads, climate, energy prices, available fuel, ductwork and the quality of installation. A conventional split system pairs an outdoor central air conditioner with an indoor coil and a furnace; choosing a properly sized, certified-matched combination matters as much as comparing efficiency ratings.
What an air conditioner and furnace combo includes
A conventional central setup uses a furnace to heat air and an air conditioner to cool it. Both typically move air through the home’s forced-air ducts. In a split system, the outdoor AC unit works with an indoor coil; the furnace and blower are also part of the indoor equipment. Central systems can also be packaged, with major components housed together.
The outdoor unit and indoor coil must be matched for the efficiency rating to apply to the proposed combination. Ask the contractor for the equipment’s full model numbers and its AHRI Reference Number or certificate. AHRI explains that indoor and outdoor split-system components need to be properly matched to achieve expected efficiency and longevity: AHRI air conditioners and heat pumps guidance.
Which system configuration fits your home?

There is no universally cheaper configuration: the comparison depends on climate, local rates, fuel access, duct repairs and installation cost. ENERGY STAR’s ductless heating and cooling guidance discusses heat pumps and sizing considerations.

How to compare efficiency and comfort
Compare the ratings for the actual proposed equipment combination, not an isolated model or a rating from a different pairing. Current Department of Energy (DOE) consumer material identifies SEER2 for cooling and HSPF2 for heat-pump heating under AHRI 210/240-2024. DOE says amended Appendix M1 testing became mandatory for manufacturers on July 7, 2025. The same page describes a newer SCORE/SHORE procedure, but says testing is not required until compliance with a future amended conservation standard. Check the DOE central air conditioner and heat pump page for the current status.
For a furnace, AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) measures the share of supplied fuel converted into heat delivered to the home. DOE’s 2021 Consumer Guide to Home Heating and Cooling explains AFUE; do not rely on its older ENERGY STAR qualification thresholds as current program criteria without checking current rules.

Features such as two-stage cooling or variable-speed motors may affect comfort and electricity use. AHRI describes two-stage central air conditioners as having two operating levels and says variable-speed motors can use less electricity than standard motors. Ask how a feature changes operation in your home and whether its added cost makes sense; it does not guarantee a particular bill saving.
Why correct sizing and installation matter
Ask each contractor to explain the heating and cooling load calculation and how it determined equipment capacity. ENERGY STAR identifies Manual J as a method for calculating a home’s heating and cooling needs and warns that equipment that is too large or too small can struggle to provide comfort. Before choosing a quote, request the proposed model numbers for the outdoor unit, indoor coil, furnace or air handler, and rating-related controls, plus the AHRI Reference Number or certificate for the matched assembly. Ask how the contractor will evaluate ducts, measure or check airflow and confirm system operation after installation. An efficient label alone cannot establish that the equipment is sized or installed appropriately for your home.
What to ask for in an installation quote
Request itemized proposals so you can compare the same scope rather than just a headline equipment price. Check whether each quote accounts for:

- Equipment models and the matched-system certificate or AHRI Reference Number.
- Labor, controls, permits and commissioning.
- Duct inspection and any repairs included or priced separately.
- Warranty terms and the contractor’s plan for checking airflow and operation.
- The assumptions behind any projected energy savings or operating-cost estimate.
DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program says an efficient product is cost effective when lifetime energy savings exceed any upfront price premium over a less-efficient option. Its procurement guidance, updated in December 2024, uses regional federal lifecycle calculations based on specific assumptions and 2023 dollars; those examples are not household bill forecasts. Compare the likely installed cost and operating assumptions for your home, not equipment price alone.

Age is a reason to evaluate a system, not proof that replacement is preferable to repair. ENERGY STAR suggests considering replacement when an air conditioner or heat pump is over 10 years old or a furnace or boiler is over 15 years old. It also flags frequent repairs, rising bills, uneven room temperatures, humidity problems, excessive dust and noise as reasons to seek professional evaluation. See ENERGY STAR’s replacement guidance.

Maintenance after installation
Follow the equipment manual for the correct filter type, dimensions and replacement interval. DOE’s 2021 homeowner guide recommends cleaning or replacing filters monthly during peak-use periods, and having air conditioners inspected in spring and furnaces in fall.
