How to choose for your hood
Match the cleaner to the hood material
Start with the hood manufacturer’s care instructions and the cleaner’s label. 3M specifically describes its wipes for stainless steel hoods. Ecolab lists its products for hood and vent cleaning, but that listing alone does not establish compatibility with every hood finish. Do not assume a cleaner suitable for one metal or coating is safe for another.
Choose the application format for the task
- Foam: Grease Express is described by Ecolab as a clinging, ready-to-use foam for vertical surfaces.
- Broader degreasing: Greasecutter Plus is presented by Ecolab as a heavy-duty non-butyl cleaner for hoods, greasy vents, and kitchen equipment.
- Ready-to-use or concentrate: Greaselift is offered in both formats, so compare the exact product directions and dilution requirements.
- Quick stainless-steel wipe-down: 3M’s wipes provide a ready-to-use option for stainless steel hood surfaces.
These are manufacturer descriptions, not head-to-head performance results. “Best” therefore depends on the label-supported fit, not a demonstrated universal ranking.
Use degreaser safely on commercial hood surfaces
- Identify the hood substrate and review its equipment-care instructions.
- Read the cleaner’s product label and Safety Data Sheet before use. 3M likewise directs users to labels and SDS for health, safety, and environmental information: 3M commercial kitchen FAQ.
- Apply only to surfaces and in ways permitted by the specific product directions. Follow any stated protective equipment, rinsing, dwell-time, and ventilation instructions.
- Keep cleaner off food-contact surfaces unless the product’s directions explicitly permit that use. 3M says its hood wipes are not intended for direct food-contact surfaces; do not use them on a griddle or another surface that directly contacts food. If cleaner contacts a food-contact surface, follow the facility’s required process and the product label.
- For stubborn or burnt-on grease, 3M’s technical sheet says a Scotch-Brite scouring pad may be used with its wipes if needed. That does not mean every abrasive pad is appropriate for every hood finish; check equipment instructions and follow the product directions.
Surface degreasing does not clean exhaust ductwork
Wiping or degreasing the visible hood does not establish that the exhaust duct system is clean. 3M discusses grease accumulation in ductwork and rooftops and points to hiring an HVAC company for duct cleaning. The product information here does not establish a cleaning interval, legal requirement, or particular service provider.
