What cleaner can I use to remove greasy buildup from my washing machine?
Use a washing-machine cleaner made for appliance maintenance, following both the washer manual and the cleaner’s label. Bosch specifically recommends its Washer Cleaner for greasy residues that may create spots on laundry. Maytag describes affresh washer cleaner as helping remove grease, soap scum, dirt, lint, water minerals, and fabric-softener soils. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent head-to-head test results, so they do not establish one universally best cleaner.
A general-purpose solvent or household degreaser is not a safe default: products and washer materials vary, and the cited guidance does not establish compatibility for every machine. Check your model’s manual before using any cleaner.
Choose a cleaner for the residue you have

How to clean the washer safely
- Check the owner manual. Find the cleaning or maintenance instructions for your exact model. Whirlpool advises consulting the washer’s use-and-care guide; its cleaning guidance describes procedures for its own machines.
- Empty the washer and select the permitted cycle. Use the designated washer-cleaning cycle if available, as directed by the manual and cleaner label.
- Place the cleaner as its label directs. Directions differ by product. For example, Seventh Generation’s pack instructions say to put one pack in the empty drum, not the dispenser, and run the cleaning cycle. If there is no automatic cleaning cycle, its instructions say to use the hottest water setting on a normal or heavy cycle.
- Do not add other chemicals unless both sets of instructions allow it. During Whirlpool’s cited affresh procedure, the guidance says not to add detergent or other chemicals. Do not assume that procedure applies to other brands or products.
- Wipe surfaces when instructed. Seventh Generation directs users to wipe the drum, door, and rubber gasket after its cycle. Follow the directions for the cleaner you use.
How often should you clean a washer?
Follow the schedule for your washer and cleaner rather than treating one interval as universal. Whirlpool describes monthly or every-30-cycle maintenance for its cited procedure. Bosch recommends using its Washer Cleaner every few months. Electrolux recommends monthly or after 30 cycles for its cited 3-in-1 hygienic cleaner. These are distinct manufacturer recommendations for their own products or procedures.

Can you use vinegar to clean a washing machine?
Do not treat vinegar as a universal substitute for washer cleaner or descaler. Bosch specifically warns against descaling its washing machines with household products such as vinegar or citric acid, saying they may degrade rubber parts over time. For a Bosch washer, use the descaling guidance and products Bosch recommends; for another brand, check that model’s manual.
