The best phlox depends on the job. Choose Phlox subulata (creeping or moss phlox) for a low, spreading spring mat in sun and sharply drained soil. Choose Phlox paniculata (tall garden or border phlox) for upright summer clumps in soil that stays reasonably moist. Within those groups, select cultivars by color, mature size, local hardiness and documented mildew performance.

First, identify which “phlox” you need

Common names are misleading. Phlox subulata and Phlox paniculata are different plants, and Phlox stolonifera is another species often sold as creeping phlox. Check the botanical name on a nursery label or listing before buying.

Feature Creeping phlox (P. subulata) Tall garden phlox (P. paniculata)
Garden role Low ground cover, edging, rock gardens, slopes and walls Upright perennial for summer borders
Typical form Mat-forming; about 6 inches high, spreading as much as 24 inches Clumping and upright; generally 2–4 feet high and 2–3 feet wide
Flowering period Usually April–May (mid-spring) Usually July–September (mid-summer into early fall)
Light Full sun Full sun or light shade
Soil preference Sharp drainage; sandy or gravelly soil is suitable Moisture-retentive soil that is not left dry; good air movement is important
Published hardiness guidance USDA Zones 3–9 for the species; ‘Emerald Pink’ is listed by Missouri Botanical Garden as Zones 2–9 USDA Zones 4–8

These are source-specific ranges and descriptions, not guarantees for every garden. Verify the named cultivar and local extension advice for your location.

Best creeping phlox varieties

‘Emerald Pink’: compact pink spring color

‘Emerald Pink’ is a practical choice when you want a pink, compact mat. Missouri Botanical Garden lists it at 0.33–0.50 feet (about 4–6 inches) tall and 1.00–1.50 feet wide, with flowers in April–May. Actual spread depends on soil, climate and establishment.

‘Emerald Blue’: blue flowers for a spring carpet

Penn State Extension identifies ‘Emerald Blue’ as a notable P. subulata cultivar. Choose it when blue spring flowers suit your color scheme; the cited guidance does not establish a head-to-head performance advantage over other named creeping cultivars.

‘Amazing Grace’: white flowers with a lilac eye

‘Amazing Grace’ produces white flowers marked by a lilac eye, according to Penn State Extension. It fits the same sunny, well-drained situations as other P. subulata selections.

‘McDaniel’s Cushion’: an RHS-recognized selection

The Royal Horticultural Society lists ‘McDaniel’s Cushion’ as an Award of Garden Merit recipient. That recognition is a useful quality signal, but it does not prove that the plant will be the best choice for every region, soil or exposure.

Best tall garden phlox varieties

‘David’: white flowers with documented mildew resistance

Penn State describes ‘David’ as an early mildew-resistant selection cultivated from a wild plant. It is a strong candidate for a white-flowered border where powdery mildew is a recurring concern. The resistance description applies to this cultivar, not automatically to all tall phlox.

Mixrug 10007+ Creeping Mixed Phlox Seeds for Planting,Bright Perennial Creeping Phlox Seeds- Ground Cover Plants Seed Non-GMO Heirloom for Outdoors
  • Creeping phlox is a perennial cushion plant that comes in many beautiful colors. Each spring, the flowers bloom in a variety of colors, spreading outwards rather than upwards.
  • Phloxes are one of the most popular and well-known summer-blooming flowers and a staple in many perennial gardens.
  • Creeping phlox is deer-resistant and does well in drought conditions, making it a relatively low-maintenance plant for the yard.
  • Attracts bees and butterflies, making it an excellent pollinator. As with all annual flowers, annual phlox must be allowed to reseed for a large display the following year.
  • Sow 3 - 4 of these flower seeds per plant, spaced 10 - 12 inches apart. Annual phlox care includes pruning the plant after the first blooms. Pruning encages a second bloom of the phlox flowers.

‘Jeana’: disease-resistant and recognized as 2024 Plant of the Year

Penn State identifies ‘Jeana’ as disease-resistant and reports that the Perennial Plant Association named it its 2024 Plant of the Year. Provide adequate spacing and airflow even with this cultivar; disease resistance does not eliminate the need for sound growing conditions.

RHS-recognized border-phlox color choices

The RHS lists ‘White Admiral’, ‘Danielle’ and ‘Prince of Orange’ among plants receiving an Award of Garden Merit. Confirm the species on the individual listing before treating any one as P. paniculata, because the RHS border-phlox group also includes P. maculata and P. × arendsii.

Where creeping phlox succeeds

Give P. subulata full sun and drainage that prevents winter or summer waterlogging. It tolerates poor soil and, once established, drought and hot, dry exposures better than most phlox. Use it in a rock garden, along an edging or foundation, on a sunny slope, or where stems can drape over a wall.

After flowering, cutting stems back by about half can preserve a neat shape and encourage denser growth; a light rebloom is possible.

Where tall garden phlox succeeds

Plant P. paniculata in full sun or light shade where soil does not dry out repeatedly. Missouri Botanical Garden describes fragrant, domed flower clusters from July through September. Penn State notes that flowering can continue into September when summer heat is not extreme and spent flowers are removed.

Powdery mildew and root rot can be serious problems. Space plants to maintain air circulation, avoid chronically wet soil, and stake tall stems where wind makes them lean.

Care practices that improve flowering and disease management

  • Watering: Water tall phlox during dry spells; creeping phlox needs less irrigation after establishment but still requires drainage.
  • Spacing: For border phlox, the RHS recommends at least 60 cm between plants. Adapt spacing to the cultivar’s mature width and your airflow needs.
  • Deadheading: Remove spent flowers promptly to support continued tall-phlox bloom and prevent unwanted self-seeding.
  • Cutting back: RHS guidance allows cutting stems by up to half in late May to delay flowering by three or four weeks. Use that technique only when a later display is wanted and adapt timing to your climate.
  • Autumn side shoots: Deadheading immediately after flowering may encourage smaller autumn flowers on side shoots.
  • Division and cleanup: Divide overgrown clumps and cut old tall-phlox stems down in late winter or early spring. Stake plants on windy sites when needed.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Read the botanical name: P. subulata for a low spring mat, P. paniculata for a tall summer clump.
  2. Measure the planting space and compare it with the cultivar’s stated mature height and width.
  3. Check whether the site is sharply drained and dry (better for creeping phlox) or moisture-retentive with airflow (better for tall phlox).
  4. Confirm the cultivar’s hardiness range against your local conditions; published ranges vary by source and selection.
  5. For tall phlox in mildew-prone gardens, prioritize cultivars specifically described as disease-resistant, such as ‘David’ or ‘Jeana’.
  6. Verify the exact species on any RHS-recognized or nursery-listed plant before purchasing.

What “best” means in this shortlist

No single cultivar is universally best. The examples above are source-backed choices for particular roles: compact pink, blue or white spring mats; white or disease-resistant tall phlox; and recognized border-phlox color selections. Award of Garden Merit status and a disease-resistance description are useful evidence, but neither replaces checking your site, climate and the exact cultivar listing.

The RHS describes the bold color blocks of border phlox as “stalwarts of the summer garden.” That role belongs to tall border phlox, while creeping phlox earns its place by covering sunny, well-drained ground early in the season.
