A slow cooker, pressure cooker, multi-cooker and rice cooker solve different problems, while a UK-style freestanding or range cooker is a permanently installed appliance with entirely different space, fuel and installation requirements. Start by choosing the cooker type that matches how you cook, then compare capacity, controls, cleaning and safety features within that category.
This guide focuses first on countertop electric cookers. A separate section explains what changes when “cooker” means a full-size freestanding or range appliance.

Which cooker type is best for your cooking?
Countertop cookers are not interchangeable. Their heating method determines the foods they handle well, how much planning they require and how much hands-on work remains.
| Type | Best suited to | What it does | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slow cooker | Planned stews, casseroles and other meals that can cook while you are away | Applies low heat over a long period | Requires advance planning; it does not rapidly cook a meal |
| Pressure cooker | Beans, tough cuts and recipes where reducing cooking time matters | Uses steam pressure to raise the cooking temperature | Requires correct locking, release and filling practices |
| Multi-cooker | Households wanting several cooking modes in one appliance | Combines selected functions such as pressure cooking, slow cooking, steaming or sautéing; the exact modes vary by model | More parts and controls to clean, and unused modes add no value |
| Rice cooker | Reliable rice with minimal supervision | Automates rice cooking and may include steaming or other programs | Usually less versatile than a multi-cooker for complete meals |
De’Longhi’s category guide describes these broad roles, while CHOICE compares the practical differences between slow cookers, pressure cookers and multi-cookers (De’Longhi buying guide; CHOICE comparison).

- Compact and portable: the compact size of the burner makes it an easily accessible item to take on the go wherever an extra cooking device is needed, at school, office, camping trips or home.
- Efficient Power - With a combined wattage of 1500W, dual hot plates and individual temperature controls, delicious meals can be cooked simultaneously.
Choose a slow cooker for scheduled, low-effort meals
A slow cooker is the straightforward choice when you can load ingredients in advance and want food ready later. CHOICE gives a rule of thumb that one to two hours in an oven is roughly equivalent to six to eight hours on low in a slow cooker. Treat that as recipe-conversion guidance, not a universal cooking result: ingredients, quantities and the appliance all affect timing.
Choose a pressure cooker when time is the constraint
Pressure cooking shortens cooking by using steam pressure. It can suit dried pulses, braises and other foods that normally need long cooking, but the lid-locking and pressure-release design deserve close attention. Follow the specific manual for maximum fill levels, release procedures and foods that foam or expand.
Choose a multi-cooker only if you will use its modes
A multi-cooker can replace several appliances when its actual programs match your regular recipes. It is not automatically better because it lists more modes. CHOICE kitchen expert Fiona Mair puts the decision plainly: “If you have a slow cooker, a rice cooker and a pressure cooker and you’re happy with them, then you don’t really need a multi-cooker.” Read the full comparison for context (CHOICE).

Choose a rice cooker for a rice-first kitchen
If rice is the task you repeat most often, a dedicated rice cooker can be simpler than learning a multi-cooker’s settings. Some models add steaming, but confirm the bowl size and program controls if you expect to cook more than rice.
How much capacity do you need?
Capacity should reflect the quantity you cook, not the largest number printed on a box. CHOICE’s Australian buying guidance suggests 3–4.5 litres for one or two people and 5–8 litres for larger households or cooks who want leftovers. Those are recommendations, not guarantees: serving sizes, recipe volumes and the appliance’s usable fill limit matter.
- One or two people: begin around 3–4.5 L unless you routinely batch-cook.
- Families or leftovers: consider 5–8 L, while checking the manual’s maximum fill level.
- Pressure cooking: never assume the entire bowl is usable; foods that expand or foam may require a lower limit.
Features worth comparing
Primary task and useful modes
List the meals you actually make, then count only the modes that support them. A pressure function, dependable slow-cook setting or rice program is more useful than a long menu of rarely used presets.

Bowl and cooking surface
Compare bowl material, shape and whether a replacement is available. A removable bowl is generally easier to wash and to move to the table, but compatibility of replacement parts is model-specific.

For pressure models, look for a lid that cannot be opened while pressurised, a clearly controlled release system and an anti-blocking design. Electrical Safety First recommends pressure-release valves, locking lids and anti-blocking devices for UK buyers (Electrical Safety First).
Cleaning and storage
Check whether the lid, sealing ring, valve and condensation parts can be removed as the manual requires. CHOICE notes that gasket residue and blocked valves can affect cleaning and pressure-cooking function. Measure the appliance, including lid clearance, before deciding where it will live.

Electrical compatibility
Verify voltage, plug and approved retailer for your country. UK three-pin plug advice from Electrical Safety First is jurisdiction-specific; an imported appliance may not be suitable simply because its controls look familiar.
Safety essentials for countertop cookers
- Buy from a reputable retailer and check current regulator notices or recalls before purchase.
- Read the model manual before first use, especially pressure limits, maximum fills and release instructions.
- Inspect and clean the sealing ring, valve and lid components as directed; reassemble them correctly.
- Do not overfill, particularly with foods that expand or froth.
- Never force a pressure lid open. Use the specified release method and wait for pressure to fall.
- Unplug the appliance before cleaning or dismantling it.
These precautions reflect Electrical Safety First and CHOICE guidance. Pressure limits and cleaning steps are model-specific, so the manual takes precedence over generic recipes.
When “cooker” means a full-size appliance
A freestanding cooker or range cooker is not a larger multi-cooker. Before comparing oven features, measure the available opening and confirm the fuel supply. Beko’s UK guide identifies width, fuel and configuration as the starting points (Beko cooker guide).

Measure the installation space
Record the opening width, depth, height, ventilation clearances and route through the home. A range cooker may be wider and combine multiple ovens with a hob, so its footprint and installation requirements can be substantially different from a standard freestanding unit.
Match the fuel and hob layout
Check whether your property supports gas, electric or another configuration before choosing a model. Compare burner or zone positions with the pans you use and confirm that installation must be carried out by an appropriately qualified professional where required.
Compare oven count and capacity
Choose multiple ovens when you routinely cook dishes at different temperatures or need simultaneous cooking. Otherwise, a single oven with suitable capacity may use space more efficiently. Treat oven count, hob layout and width as separate decisions rather than assuming more cavities are always better.

A practical buying checklist
- Have you selected the appliance category that fits your main cooking task?
- Does the capacity match household portions and leftovers?
- Are the important modes clearly identified, rather than relying on a total mode count?
- Can you remove and clean the lid, seal, valve and bowl as required?
- For pressure models, are locking, release and anti-blocking features clear?
- Will the footprint, lid clearance and electrical supply work in your kitchen?
- For a full-size cooker, have you measured the opening and confirmed fuel and installation requirements?
- Have you checked the current manual, recalls and local compliance requirements?
Bottom line
Buy a slow cooker for planned low-and-slow meals, a pressure cooker for faster cooking of foods that normally take a long time, a rice cooker when rice is the priority, and a multi-cooker only when its specific modes replace appliances you would otherwise use. If you mean a full-size cooker, decide width, fuel, configuration and oven capacity first; those installation constraints come before brand or feature comparisons.
