A convection microwave with grill combines microwave cooking with fan-assisted oven-style heat and a grill for browning. That combination can cover reheating, baking, roasting and finishing food with a browned surface—but exact modes differ by model and market. The right choice depends on which jobs you will actually use, whether the usable interior fits your cookware, and whether your kitchen can safely accommodate the unit’s size and ventilation needs.
What does a convection microwave with grill do?
The three functions solve different cooking problems:
- Microwave: heats and cooks quickly, making it useful for reheating, defrosting and everyday cooking.
- Grill: adds direct browning or surface crisping. A grill microwave may combine grill and microwave cooking, but the word “grill” alone does not mean the appliance can bake like an oven.
- Convection: uses a fan and heating element to circulate hot air for oven-style baking and roasting. Samsung’s India-market guide describes convection microwaves as also able to grill and brown food.
A combination model may let you use modes separately or together. Panasonic UK describes its combination mode this way: “Combination Mode uses Microwave and Grill/Oven/Steam functions simultaneously.” That is Panasonic’s description, not a guarantee that every combination microwave supports every pairing. Check the precise mode list for the local model number; steam and air-fry functions are not universal.
For a closer look at the distinctions among standard, grill and combination ovens, see Consumer NZ’s microwave buying guide and Samsung India’s microwave buying guide.

Should you buy a convection microwave oven?
It may suit you if you will use the extra cooking modes
A convection microwave with grill can be useful if you regularly want to bake, roast or brown food as well as reheat it. It may also help in a compact kitchen where one appliance needs to handle several cooking tasks, or in a larger kitchen as a second oven. The benefit is versatility—not that every mode will replace a full-size oven for every recipe or quantity.
A simpler microwave may be enough for reheating
If you mainly reheat leftovers, defrost food or prepare simple meals, the convection and grill functions may add cost and complexity without much benefit. Consumer NZ notes that extra features generally cost more and that someone who only reheats leftovers does not need a grill and many automatic programmes.

How do the example models compare?
The following are examples with specifications documented by their publishers, not a global ranking. Model names, features and availability vary by country; confirm the exact regional model and its manual before buying.
| Model | Documented details | What to note |
| Panasonic NN-CD88 | Panasonic UK lists 34 L capacity, a 1,300 W grill, fan-assisted convection at 40 and 100–220 °C, microwave power levels and an air-fry mode. | A larger-capacity example with several cooking functions. T3 named it its overall pick in its 2026 comparison; that is T3’s verdict, not a universal ranking. |
| Panasonic NN-CD58RS | Panasonic UK lists 27 L capacity, a 1,300 W grill, fan-assisted convection at 30–220 °C and an air-fry mode. | A smaller-capacity example; confirm availability and the exact local variant. |
| Panasonic NN-CT57RM | Panasonic UK lists 27 L capacity, a 1,300 W grill, fan-assisted convection at 30–220 °C and an air-fry mode. | Similar headline capacity to the NN-CD58RS, but do not assume that neighboring model variants share every feature. |
| Caso Design MCG 25 Ceramic Chef | T3 lists 25 L capacity, 900 W microwave, 1,200 W grill, 2,050 W convection, six combination modes, nine automatic programmes and an included multipurpose pan/grill rack. | T3 reports testing it over several months, describing a flat ceramic interior and noting that it is large on the counter and can be loud in convection mode. |
Specifications above come from Panasonic UK’s guide for 2–4 people, Panasonic UK’s cooking-style guide and T3’s 2026 comparison. They are regional product specifications, not evidence that a model is sold with identical specifications everywhere.

What size microwave oven should you buy?
Capacity in litres is only a starting point. The interior’s usable width, height and depth, plus its turntable or flatbed layout, determine whether your plates, baking dishes and cookware fit. Consumer NZ cautions that usable space can be smaller than the advertised capacity. Measure the dishes you actually use and check the manufacturer’s interior dimensions and any restrictions for convection or grill modes.
Consumer NZ says microwave ovens range from about 18 L to 35 L and suggests at least 30 L for a family. Treat that as its consumer guidance, not a universal minimum: household size, cooking habits and cookware matter. For context, Panasonic UK’s examples include 27 L models and a 34 L model, while T3 lists the Caso MCG 25 at 25 L.

How should you check countertop fit and installation?
Measure the appliance’s exterior width, depth and height against the intended space, allowing for the cord and the ventilation clearances specified by its manufacturer. Do not select a spot based only on the unit’s listed dimensions: convection and combination cooking generate heat, and a benchtop microwave needs to remain freestanding rather than being enclosed in a cabinet.
Consumer NZ gives approximate ventilation guidance of about 10 cm around the sides and 20 cm above, while stressing that the product instructions determine the actual requirements. These are not substitutes for the clearance requirements in the manual. If considering a built-in model, check whether it needs a model-specific trim kit; Consumer NZ advises electrician installation for built-in units.

Quick Recap
What should you compare before choosing a model?
- Cooking functions: confirm microwave, grill, convection and combination modes by name. Check whether the functions operate together or separately, and verify any claimed steam or air-fry function on the exact regional variant.
- Capacity and interior layout: compare listed litres with the usable dimensions, turntable or flatbed layout, and cookware you plan to use.
- Footprint and ventilation: compare exterior measurements with your counter and follow the model’s manual for clearances and placement.
- Power and temperature: compare microwave power levels or output, grill wattage and convection temperature range only where the manufacturer publishes them for that specific model and market.
- Daily usability: consider controls, automatic programmes, cleaning, included trays or racks, and whether the extra functions justify the added cost. T3’s observations about the Caso MCG 25’s countertop size and convection noise are specific to its review.
- Installation type: distinguish a freestanding benchtop appliance from a built-in model, and confirm whether a trim kit or professional installation is required.
