Short answer: For several carpeted rooms, embedded dirt, heavy traffic, or recurring pet messes, the BISSELL Big Green Machine Professional Carpet Cleaner 86T3 is the most suitable heavy-duty candidate in this comparison. For stairs, upholstery, car interiors, small rugs, and isolated spills, choose a portable extractor such as the BISSELL Little Green HydroSteam family instead. The Shark CarpetXpert EX201 is worth considering if an integrated upright-and-handheld workflow matters, while the BISSELL Revolution HydroSteam Pet 3432 is aimed at shoppers who specifically want a steam-assisted upright.
None of these machines is an allergy treatment, mold cure, or allergen sterilizer. Carpet cleaning is a source-control and stain-removal measure: it can remove soil and reduce some contaminants, but it does not eliminate every pollen particle, dust mite allergen, pet allergen, or mold spore. Drying the carpet fully is just as important as extracting the dirt.
Quick picks by cleaning job

Why carpet cleaning can help during allergy season—and where it stops
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency identifies carpet as a reservoir for dust, dirt, pollen, mold spores, and other biological contaminants. Regular cleaning can reduce house-dust mites, pollen, animal dander, and related allergy-causing agents, but EPA guidance is careful about the wording: reduction is not elimination.
That makes a carpet extractor useful for source control. It can flush and recover soil that ordinary vacuuming and spot cleaning leave behind. The Carpet and Rug Institute describes extraction as the deeper-cleaning step that addresses material left behind by routine vacuuming and spot treatment. It is still only one part of an indoor-air strategy. Ventilation, controlling outdoor pollen entry, washing bedding, reducing dust on hard surfaces, and managing pet dander may also matter.

Vacuuming and wet extraction do different jobs. Vacuum first to remove loose dry soil, but do so when allergy-sensitive occupants are out of the room. EPA warns that vacuuming can temporarily increase airborne mite allergens and other biological contaminants. Wet cleaning should then be followed by careful moisture removal and drying—not repeated soaking.
Do not buy a carpet cleaner expecting it to diagnose or treat allergies. A laboratory study indexed in EPA’s HERO database found that steam-vapor treatment reduced dust mites under laboratory conditions. That finding does not prove that a household carpet cleaner eliminates allergy symptoms, sterilizes a room, or cures mold in an ordinary home.
1. Best fit for whole-home cleaning: BISSELL Big Green Machine 86T3
The BISSELL Big Green Machine Professional Carpet Cleaner 86T3 is the strongest configuration for readers who need to clean multiple rooms, large area rugs, stairs, embedded household soil, or recurring pet messes. It is a full-size, corded upright rather than a lightweight spot cleaner.
- Cleaning path: listed at 10.5 inches
- Clean-water tank: listed at 1.75 gallons
- Power cord: listed at 25 feet
- Hose: listed at 9 feet
- Included stain tool: listed 6-inch tough-stain tool
- Agitation: rotating DirtLifter PowerBrush
- Listed weight: 42 pounds
- Intended surfaces and jobs: carpet, rugs, stairs, upholstery, and large areas
Its capacity and upright format reduce the repeated tank refills and slow hand-held passes that make whole-home cleaning impractical with a portable unit. The hose and tool also give it more flexibility on stairs and individual spots than a basic upright alone.
The important limitation is that the 86T3 does not heat water. BISSELL recommends warm tap water, not boiling water. That is not necessarily a disadvantage: extraction quality depends on agitation, solution use, and how much dirty water the machine actually recovers. It does mean shoppers should not confuse this model with a built-in water heater or assume that its cleaning performance comes from steam.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose it when: you have several carpeted rooms, large rugs, heavy foot traffic, pets, or recurring messes and can accommodate a 42-pound machine.
Skip or rethink it when: you only clean occasional spills, have very limited storage, cannot manage a heavy machine, or need a compact tool primarily for a car or upholstery.
2. Steam-assisted upright option: BISSELL Revolution HydroSteam Pet 3432
The BISSELL Revolution HydroSteam Pet 3432 is designed for shoppers who want steam incorporated into an upright carpet-cleaning process. BISSELL says its SteamWash Max Clean mode combines steam, water, and cleaning solution. The company also lists a 25-foot cord, a 2-in-1 pet upholstery tool, and a 6-inch tough-stain tool.
BISSELL states that the 3432 delivered “2X better cleaning” than a named Tineco comparator under ASTM F2828 conditions, and says the product was tested for more than 500 hours in laboratories and homes. Those are manufacturer-supplied claims. They should not be converted into an independent conclusion that the machine is twice as effective in every household, removes twice as much allergen, or improves allergy symptoms.

Steam may be attractive for set-in pet stains and readers who want a steam-assisted workflow, but heat is not a substitute for recovery and drying. A carpet can look clean while retaining excess moisture in the pile or backing. The same safeguards apply: verify the carpet-care instructions, use the directed solution amount, make controlled passes, and allow the carpet to dry fully.
Choose it when: steam assistance is a priority and you want an upright with pet-oriented tools.
Do not choose it solely because: the word “steam” appears in the name. Steam does not make the machine a medical device, allergen sterilizer, or mold-remediation system.
3. Best integrated spot-cleaning concept: Shark CarpetXpert EX201
The Shark CarpetXpert EX201 combines an upright deep carpet cleaner with a built-in spot-and-stain cleaner. That arrangement is useful for a household that wants one machine for room-sized work but also wants a fast handheld workflow for a spill, stair tread, upholstery cushion, or pet accident.

Shark says its StainStriker system combines two chemicals at the handheld tool and claims “20X more stain-striking power.” The claim is from Shark and should be treated as a marketing comparison, not as an independent stain-removal score. Shark’s product information also lists a five-year limited warranty and a 60-day money-back guarantee; confirm the current terms, geography, registration requirements, and included accessories before relying on them.
The EX201 is a good configuration match for readers who dislike storing both a full-size extractor and a separate spot cleaner. It is not automatically the best choice for allergy reduction, and its integrated chemistry does not remove the need to follow the carpet manufacturer’s care instructions.
Choose it when: you want upright room cleaning plus an integrated handheld spot-cleaning option.
Before buying: verify current U.S. availability, model number, tank arrangement, included tools, warranty terms, and the current wording of Shark’s performance claims.

The BISSELL Little Green HydroSteam portable carpet cleaner family is better suited to isolated work than to cleaning an entire carpeted home. Portable extraction is particularly practical for stairs, upholstery, car interiors, small rugs, and fresh spills where carrying a full-size upright would be excessive.
BISSELL’s support documentation identifies multiple model numbers in the HydroSteam family and provides carpet-tag guidance that includes cleaning codes “W” or “WS.” The 3618 Pet model is listed with separate clean- and dirty-water tanks, including a 64-ounce clean-water tank. Because the family includes multiple model numbers and configurations, confirm the exact model before buying tools, formulas, or replacement parts.

A portable cleaner can be easier to deploy promptly. That matters with a fresh spill, when a small amount of controlled extraction may prevent a stain from setting. Its limitations are equally clear: a smaller cleaning path, smaller capacity than a full-size upright, more bending or kneeling, and more tank interruptions during whole-room work.
Choose it when: the typical problem is a stair, cushion, car seat, small rug, or one pet accident.

5. Portable alternative with a replacement-parts ecosystem: Hoover CleanSlate
Hoover CleanSlate models are portable carpet-and-upholstery spot cleaners. Hoover’s official support and parts information identifies compatible tanks, hose assemblies, rinse tools, formulas, and other replacement items. Hoover also lists a hose assembly that fits multiple CleanSlate model numbers, including FH14000, FH14010, FH14050, and related variants.
That parts ecosystem can be valuable to owners who expect to keep a portable cleaner for years rather than replace the entire machine after a hose or tank fails. It is also relevant for car and upholstery work. However, compatibility is model-specific. Check the complete model number on the machine before ordering a Hoover CleanSlate replacement hose, rinse tool, tank, or formula. A part that fits one FH-series variant may not fit every CleanSlate sold under a similar name.
CleanSlate is best viewed as a practical portable alternative, not a replacement for a full-size extractor when the job is several carpeted rooms.
How to choose a carpet cleaner for spring cleaning
Start with coverage, not the most impressive feature
Use a portable machine if your normal job is one isolated mess. Use an upright if you need to clean rooms, hallways, large rugs, or a broad pet-traffic path. Larger tanks and wider cleaning paths reduce interruptions, but they increase weight, storage demands, and the amount of water that must be handled after cleaning.
A construction or renovation context changes the decision slightly. For a property turnover or a home with carpet throughout several rooms, an upright extractor may justify its storage footprint. For one room protected during a remodel, a portable unit may be sufficient. For newly installed or warranty-covered carpet, the manufacturer’s required cleaning method should take priority over a machine’s advertised feature list.
Prioritize extraction and drying over heat alone
The practical question is not simply whether a machine uses hot water or steam. Ask how easily you can control the amount of solution, make additional recovery passes, empty the dirty tank, rinse the machine, and dry the carpet afterward. Steam-assisted cleaning can be useful for some stains, but a damp backing is a moisture problem regardless of the machine’s marketing language.
EPA guidance says wet carpet and backing should be dried quickly. For water-damaged carpet, EPA materials point to thorough drying within roughly 24 to 48 hours because damp materials can support microbial growth. That water-damage guidance should not be interpreted as permission to leave a normally cleaned carpet wet for two days; follow the carpet and machine instructions and use the fastest safe drying plan available.

- OXY-POWERED DEPENDABLE PERFORMANCE: The oxy-powered, decomposable formula works deep into carpet fibers and helps lift stains and eliminate odors at the source. Designed to act fast, often working in as little as 3 minutes, it delivers noticeable cleaning power when spills, tracked-in dirt & everyday accidents happen
- DUAL-ACTION SPONGE + BRISTLE APPLICATOR: This cleaner features a built-in 2-in-1 applicator for easy, targeted deep clean and stain removal. The sponge helps address surface stains and odors, while the brush bristles reach deeper into carpet fibers to loosen messes. The integrated design gives you control and precision for easy, effortless use
- EASY SPOT CLEANING WITH SIMPLE AFTERCARE: Designed for spot cleaning only, this formula should not be used in a steam cleaner. After treatment, remove excess product with a clean, damp, colorfast cloth or sponge. Vacuuming is optional based on preference, making this an easy solution for routine cleaning in high-use areas throughout the home
- SAFE-USE TIPS: For easier stain removal, treat stains promptly and always test for colorfastness in a hidden area, checking once the stain is dry. Safe on colors when used as directed. Do not use on silk, velvet, Haitian cotton, or fabrics harmed by water. Safe to use around children, keep treated areas undisturbed until dry
Match the machine to the mess
- Loose soil and pollen: vacuum first, then extract when a deeper clean is appropriate.
- Pet urine or organic accidents: use a compatible enzymatic or oxygenated formula only if the carpet, machine, and formula instructions allow it. Do not describe any formula as an allergy cure.
- Set-in stains: pre-treat only as directed, allow the specified dwell time, and avoid aggressive scrubbing that can damage fibers.
- Upholstery and car interiors: use a portable machine and verify the fabric or material is water-cleanable.
- Water damage, suspected mold, or contaminated carpet: stop treating the job as an ordinary stain. Drying, removal, remediation, or professional assessment may be necessary.
Check the carpet label, fiber, backing, and warranty
Before wet-cleaning, look for the carpet manufacturer’s care instructions and cleaning code. A portable-machine support guide may identify “W” or “WS” as compatible codes, but that does not make every carpet safe to wet-clean. Fiber type, backing, installation method, previous water exposure, dyes, and warranty terms can all affect the decision.
Test an inconspicuous area for colorfastness and texture change. Never assume that a machine’s general statement that it works on carpet overrides the carpet manufacturer’s restrictions. Delicate, water-sensitive, antique, glued-down, or warranty-sensitive carpet is often a better candidate for a qualified professional cleaner.
A safe spring-cleaning workflow
- Read the care instructions. Confirm that the carpet and any rug backing permit the intended wet-cleaning method. Check the machine manual for solution and water limits.
- Remove loose soil first. Vacuum slowly and thoroughly. Keep allergy-sensitive occupants out of the room during vacuuming because airborne contaminants may temporarily increase.
- Clear and inspect the area. Remove furniture where practical, identify stains, check for color transfer, and look for signs of dampness or water damage.
- Patch-test the solution. Use only a compatible formula at the directed dilution. For the Big Green 86T3, use warm tap water as BISSELL recommends; do not pour boiling water into the machine.
- Use controlled passes. Apply no more solution than the machine and carpet instructions allow. Make deliberate cleaning passes, then make additional recovery passes without adding more solution.
- Dry aggressively but safely. Improve air circulation with ventilation and fans where appropriate. Keep people and pets off the carpet until it is dry. Do not cover damp carpet with furniture, rugs, or plastic.
- Deal with persistent moisture separately. If carpet or backing remains wet, smells musty, or has suffered water damage, do not keep adding cleaning solution. Investigate the moisture source and consider professional help.
- Clean the machine immediately. Empty dirty water, rinse tanks, flush or rinse tools and hoses as directed, and leave removable components separated so they can dry fully.
Buy, rent, or hire a professional?
Buy
Buying makes sense when you have multiple carpeted rooms, pets, young children, frequent spills, or a recurring need for stairs and upholstery cleaning. A full-size machine such as the 86T3 has the capacity for larger jobs; a portable HydroSteam or CleanSlate-style unit is easier to store and deploy for spot work.
Do not compare machines only by purchase price. Include storage space, carrying weight, tank refills, solution use, cleanup time, replacement hoses and brushes, and the risk of using an unsuitable machine on the carpet.
Rent
Renting can be sensible for a one-time whole-home clean when you do not want to store a large extractor. Before accepting the equipment, confirm the machine’s condition, tool availability, solution requirements, return-cleaning rules, and whether the carpet manufacturer permits the method. A rental is not a shortcut around fiber restrictions or drying requirements.
Hire
A professional is often the better option for a large property, delicate carpet, extensive soil, warranty-sensitive installation, or a job where moisture control is critical. The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends professional deep cleaning every 12 to 18 months, subject to the carpet manufacturer’s requirements. Look for a CRI Seal-of-Approval provider rather than choosing solely on a low advertised price.
Professional help is especially appropriate after water damage or when mold is suspected. A consumer carpet cleaner can remove some surface soil, but it cannot establish the source of moisture or promise that microbial contamination has been remediated.
Maintenance that prevents the cleaner from becoming the problem
- Empty the dirty-water tank promptly after each session.
- Rinse the clean- and dirty-water tanks and allow them to dry open or separated according to the manual.
- Rinse the floor head, upholstery tool, rinse tool, and hose as directed.
- Remove hair and fibers from the brush roll; inspect the brush roll periodically for wear.
- Do not store a machine with stagnant water or a sealed, damp tank.
- Use only compatible formulas and the specified dilution. More detergent can leave residue and attract soil.
- Confirm the exact model number before ordering accessories. For compatible Big Green models, BISSELL parts listings identify a replacement hose assembly 2037523 and brush roll 2037458; verify fit before ordering.
- For CleanSlate owners, verify the complete FH-series model number before purchasing a replacement hose, tank, rinse tool, or formula.
How to read performance claims honestly
“2X better cleaning,” “20X more stain-striking power,” and “tested for more than 500 hours” sound like standardized editorial scores, but they are not. In this comparison, the first claim comes from BISSELL’s comparison under ASTM F2828 conditions, the second comes from Shark, and the testing-hours statement comes from BISSELL. The cited conditions, comparator, stain type, number of passes, pretreatment, solution dilution, drying time, and scoring method matter.
A genuinely independent test would need to document the carpet fiber and backing, mess composition, age of each stain, pretreatment, formula dilution, machine settings, number of wet and dry passes, tank refills, residual moisture, drying time, noise, weight, cleanup effort, and stain-removal scoring. Without those records, it is more accurate to recommend machines by configuration and use case than to declare one universal winner.

Price, availability, and model-number cautions
Retail prices, included accessories, inventory, warranties, and guarantees change. This guide intentionally does not publish a price that may be obsolete by the time you read it. Search or compare the exact model number, not only the product family name. This is particularly important for the BISSELL Little Green HydroSteam 3532/3618 family, Hoover CleanSlate variants, and Shark’s EX201.
Before purchase, confirm the machine is available in your country, the voltage is appropriate, the retailer’s return terms are current, and the accessory list matches your intended job. For a warranty-sensitive carpet, retain the manual and purchase record and follow the carpet manufacturer’s cleaning schedule.
Final recommendation by household
- Large carpeted home or recurring pet messes: start with the BISSELL Big Green Machine 86T3 if you can manage its weight and storage requirements.
- Pet-focused shopper who wants steam assistance: consider the BISSELL Revolution HydroSteam Pet 3432, while treating its comparative claims as manufacturer claims.
- One-machine upright plus spot-cleaning workflow: consider the Shark CarpetXpert EX201 after verifying current availability and terms.
- Stairs, upholstery, cars, small rugs, and isolated accidents: choose the BISSELL Little Green HydroSteam 3532/3618 or a comparable CleanSlate-style portable unit.
- Delicate, warranty-sensitive, water-damaged, or very large job: hire a CRI Seal-of-Approval professional cleaner after checking the carpet manufacturer’s requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a carpet cleaner remove spring allergens?
It can remove soil and reduce some pollen, pet dander, dust-mite material, and other contaminants held in carpet, but it cannot eliminate every allergen or treat an allergy. Keep sensitive occupants out of the room during vacuuming, follow the carpet-care instructions, and dry the carpet completely after extraction.
Is a steam carpet cleaner better for allergies than a standard extractor?
Not automatically. Steam may help with some cleaning tasks, but allergy-season value depends on source removal, effective extraction, compatible chemistry, and drying. A household steam or carpet cleaner should not be described as an allergen sterilizer, medical device, or mold cure.
How often should carpet be professionally deep-cleaned?
The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends professional deep cleaning every 12 to 18 months, subject to the carpet manufacturer’s requirements. Homes with pets, heavy traffic, delicate carpet, or unusual contamination may need a different schedule.
Can I use any carpet cleaner on any carpet?
No. Check the carpet label, fiber, backing, cleaning code, and warranty requirements first. Test an inconspicuous area and use only a compatible machine and formula. Delicate or water-sensitive carpet may require professional cleaning.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How quickly should wet carpet dry?
Drying time varies with the carpet, humidity, airflow, and amount of water used. EPA guidance for water-damaged carpet emphasizes thorough drying within roughly 24 to 48 hours because damp materials can support microbial growth. Do not leave normally cleaned carpet unnecessarily wet; use controlled solution and recovery passes, improve airflow, and address persistent dampness professionally.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The BISSELL Big Green Machine 86T3 is the best configuration match for large-area and heavy-mess cleaning, not a universal or independently tested winner. Choose a portable BISSELL Little Green HydroSteam or Hoover CleanSlate-style machine for isolated messes, consider the Shark EX201 for integrated spot cleaning, and treat the BISSELL HydroSteam 3432’s steam and performance claims as manufacturer claims. The allergy benefit comes from reducing retained soil and contaminants while preventing excess moisture—not from treating the carpet cleaner as an allergy or mold-remediation device.
