For cutting individual sugar-cane stalks or small patches by hand, the Bellota 350PMM machete is the clearest cane-specific option in the available product information: Bellota explicitly lists sugar cane among its intended uses and offers 14-, 16- and 20-inch blade variants. That does not establish one best length for every user or job. For larger areas, a brushcutter may be more practical, but its blade must be approved for the exact machine. “Cane grass” can mean sugar cane or tall, cane-like grass, so the right tool depends on the plant, area and scale of work.
Choose a blade for the job and the plant
Individual sugar-cane stalks, a small patch of tall grass and a commercial cane field are different cutting jobs. A hand machete gives the operator direct control over individual cuts. A powered brushcutter is a separate option for larger areas of heavy grass, reeds or light scrub. Commercial harvesting uses purpose-built basecutter equipment, not a hand machete or an ordinary brushcutter attachment.

Which hand machete suits sugar cane?
Bellota 350PMM: the cane-specific candidate
Bellota’s official US product page explicitly recommends its wooden-handle 350PMM machete for cutting sugar cane, along with bushes, stubble, small branches and coffee. It lists blade lengths of 14, 16 and 20 inches. This makes it a direct match by intended use, not a proven universal winner: the product information does not provide comparative tests, cane-diameter limits or guidance matching a length to a particular user or stalk size. When choosing among its listed lengths, consider how much reach and control you can comfortably manage, the space available for a swing, the size of the stalks, and whether you can keep the edge in good condition. The available specifications do not establish that the longest or shortest version cuts cane more effectively.

Tramontina 20-inch: a general grass-and-brush alternative
Tramontina describes its 20-inch carbon-steel machete with a black polypropylene handle for tall grass and brush. Its listed use makes it a possible general-purpose alternative where those are the main materials, but the product page does not specifically recommend it for sugar cane. Compare its length, handle and balance with the work rather than assuming that a general grass-and-brush description proves cane-specific performance. See Tramontina’s product details.
Small, confined areas
A sickle can be useful for weeds or grass in limited space, where a broad machete swing is awkward. The U.S. government-hosted “Tools for Brushing” guide describes sickles as curved knives for this kind of work and discusses handling and whetstone maintenance. It is a small-area alternative, not a cane-specific product recommendation.

When a powered brushcutter makes sense
For substantial areas, a powered brushcutter may reduce the need to cut each stem by hand. The blade still has to suit both the vegetation and the machine. STIHL USA describes its tri-bladed steel Brush Knife for tough grass, reeds and light scrub—not specifically for sugar cane—and lists compatibility separately for its 300 mm and 350 mm variants. Do not treat either size as a universal fit or a cane-optimized specification. Check the exact model and approved attachment information before fitting a blade. STIHL’s Brush Knife page lists compatible models.
STIHL India’s farming guidance likewise says blade choice should follow the task, including grass cutting, weed removal, crop residue or shrubs, and emphasizes matching equipment and checking it before use. Do not use unapproved metal attachments
A blade that physically fits is not necessarily safe or approved for a brushcutter. In a safety bulletin dated 12 November 2013, the UK Health and Safety Executive warned that linked-part chain-flail and other non-standard metal attachments for portable brushcutters can fail catastrophically and eject components. Its warning concerns those non-standard accessories; it should not be read as a claim that approved one-piece blades share the same risk. The HSE advises: “Anyone using them should discontinue use of any non-standard metal cutting accessory immediately and consult the brush cutter manufacturer for guidance.” Read the HSE bulletin.
Before using powered equipment, follow the machine maker’s instructions for the approved blade, guard and operating procedure. A blade recommendation for one machine or market does not confirm compatibility with another.

Keep a brushcutter blade sharp and in balance
Husqvarna recommends sharpening a brushcutter grass blade with a single-cut flat file, following the original bevel and sharpening the cutting edges evenly so the blade remains balanced. Do not try to sharpen and reuse a blade that is cracked, bent, twisted or missing part of its edge; replace it. Follow the instructions for the specific machine and blade. Husqvarna’s sharpening instructions describe the method.
Use a machete with space and control
Wear sturdy shoes, long pants and work gloves; keep the free hand clear of the cut, cut in front of your body, and keep children and pets away from the work area. These precautions, drawn from Fiskars’ machete guidance, do not replace training or the tool’s own instructions. Stop if you cannot maintain a clear cutting path or secure footing.

Commercial cane harvesting needs purpose-built blades
For mechanized agricultural harvesting, suppliers such as Pratco offer sugar-cane harvesting and basecutter blades. These are industrial components, not consumer machete substitutes or ordinary brushcutter blades. Selection depends on the harvester, crop and field conditions, and applicable OEM requirements; the supplier’s cited page does not provide a consumer selection guide.
