For most home offices, the Brother MFC-L2820DW is the best black-and-white laser printer overall. It combines sharp monochrome printing with scanning, copying, faxing, automatic two-sided printing, a 250-sheet tray, and a 50-page automatic document feeder (ADF). It is the right choice when a household, home business, or construction office needs more than a printer.
If you only print documents, choose the Brother HL-L2460DW instead. It is faster, smaller, and less expensive than the all-in-one, while retaining automatic duplex printing and a 250-sheet tray. For unusually high monthly volumes, the HP LaserJet Tank MFP 2604sdw is worth considering because its refillable toner system starts with an approximately 5,000-page supply. The Canon imageCLASS LBP122dw is a reasonable budget alternative only when you find one from a reputable, in-stock seller.

Best overall: Brother MFC-L2820DW
The Brother MFC-L2820DW is the most versatile recommendation for a home office. It prints, scans, copies, and faxes, so you do not need a separate scanner for signed forms, receipts, invoices, permits, or other paperwork. Its 50-page ADF also makes multi-page copying and scanning less tedious than placing every sheet on the scanner glass.

Brother rates it at up to 34 pages per minute and specifies automatic two-sided printing, a 250-sheet paper tray, dual-band Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and USB connectivity. Brother lists a recommended monthly print volume of up to 2,500 pages and a maximum duty cycle of up to 35,000 pages. Those figures indicate that it is suitable for a busy home office, although they should not be interpreted as a target for routine monthly printing.
Independent testing from RTINGS also selected the MFC-L2820DW as its best black-and-white printer. In its testing, the printer produced sharp documents with strong fine-line detail and reached approximately 33 pages per minute in the relevant test category. RTINGS measured approximately 1,300 pages from the standard toner in its setup and lists the separate drum at roughly 15,000 prints.

The important limitation is the scanner. The MFC-L2820DW can automatically print on both sides, but its scanner and ADF are not duplex-capable. If the original document has printing on both sides, you must turn the pages over manually. The unit is also considerably larger and heavier than a print-only model, so check the available desk or shelf space before buying.
Choose it if: you occasionally scan or copy paperwork, want an ADF, or are setting up a genuinely capable home-office document center. Skip it if: you already have a scanner and never need copies or scans.
Best print-only choice: Brother HL-L2460DW
For households that only need black-and-white printing, the Brother HL-L2460DW is the better value and simpler fit. It removes the scanner, ADF, copier, and fax hardware while keeping the features that matter for routine document printing: automatic duplex printing, a 250-sheet tray, dual-band wireless networking, Ethernet, and USB 2.0.
Brother rates the HL-L2460DW at up to 36 pages per minute. The U.S. product page listed a price of $179.99 during the research pass, but that is a snapshot rather than a permanent buying threshold. Retail pricing, promotions, stock, and warranty terms can change.
It is also the print-only model with the strongest independent support in this group. RTINGS recommends the HL-L2460DW or related variants as its best budget monochrome laser printer, highlighting its compact footprint, automatic duplex printing, Wi-Fi and USB connectivity, Apple AirPrint and Mopria support, and good build quality. RTINGS obtained approximately 1,300 pages from the standard cartridge in testing and reports roughly 3,300 pages for the available high-yield option.

This is normal, but it means the initial cartridge should not be used as the main basis for estimating long-term running costs.
Choose it if: you print estimates, invoices, forms, shipping labels, schoolwork, or other documents but almost never scan or copy. Do not choose it if: you expect to digitize paperwork, make copies, or use an ADF. Buying the print-only model and adding a scanner later can cost more and take up more space than choosing the MFC-L2820DW initially.

Do not confuse it with the Brother HL-L2405W
The smaller Brother HL-L2405W may appear attractive if it is cheaper, but Brother’s brochure explicitly lists automatic duplex printing as unavailable. If you regularly print multi-page documents or want to reduce paper use and manual page turning, the HL-L2460DW is the safer choice.
Best for unusually high print volume: HP LaserJet Tank MFP 2604sdw
The HP LaserJet Tank MFP 2604sdw is designed around a refillable black-toner system rather than the conventional replaceable-cartridge approach. HP specifies automatic duplex printing, a 250-sheet input tray, wireless and Ethernet connectivity, and a maximum black print speed of up to 23 pages per minute. It is a multifunction printer, making it more useful than a print-only tank model for a home business that also scans or copies.

HP gives it a recommended monthly volume of 250 to 2,500 pages and says the introductory toner supply is approximately 5,000 black pages under ISO/IEC 19752 continuous-printing conditions. Actual yield depends on page coverage, media, document type, and usage. The large initial supply is the reason to consider this model when a home office prints many pages every month.
There are meaningful trade-offs. Its rated speed is lower than the Brother MFC-L2820DW and HL-L2460DW. RTINGS found that USB printing was considerably faster than Wi-Fi in its testing, so a wired connection may be preferable for large jobs if the printer is positioned near a computer or network point. RTINGS also notes that drum replacement is inconvenient because the drum is not generally available as a normal consumer replacement part.
Choose it if: your household or small home business prints heavily and the refillable toner design matches your expected usage. Skip it if: you print only a few pages each week, need the fastest printer here, or want straightforward, ordinary replacement parts and servicing.
Best budget alternative: Canon imageCLASS LBP122dw
The Canon imageCLASS LBP122dw remains a credible low-cost print-only alternative. It is rated for up to 30 pages per minute and includes automatic duplex printing, a 150-sheet paper cassette, Wi-Fi Direct, USB, Ethernet, and a five-line LCD. Canon specifies a recommended monthly print volume of 200 to 2,000 pages.
Availability is the problem. Canon’s U.S. shop page says the LBP122dw is no longer available directly from Canon, so buyers should verify that a seller actually has new stock and should check the warranty and return policy. A low purchase price is less attractive if the unit is used, refurbished without clear terms, or sold by a source that cannot provide dependable support.

RTINGS lists the Canon as a notable low-cost alternative but found weaker print quality than the Brother HL-L2460DW. Its test unit also produced crooked prints. That does not prove every LBP122dw will behave identically, but it is enough to keep the Canon in the secondary-recommendation category rather than making it the default budget pick.
Choose it if: you find a reputable seller with clear warranty coverage and the price is meaningfully better than the Brother. Otherwise: the HL-L2460DW is the more straightforward print-only recommendation.
How to choose the right home laser printer
1. Decide whether you need an all-in-one
- Choose print-only if you already own a scanner or almost never need to copy or digitize documents. The HL-L2460DW is the leading fit.
- Choose an all-in-one if you scan receipts, signed documents, applications, invoices, work orders, or multi-page paperwork. The MFC-L2820DW is the better general-purpose choice.
- Choose the HP Tank model when unusually high volume makes a large refillable toner supply more important than maximum speed or the simplest drum replacement.
2. Make automatic duplex printing a real requirement
Automatic duplex printing means the printer can print both sides of a sheet without you manually reinserting the pages. It is included on all four recommendations, but it is not included on the Brother HL-L2405W. This feature is particularly useful for long reports, contracts, estimates, and other multi-page documents.
Do not confuse duplex printing with duplex scanning. The MFC-L2820DW prints both sides automatically, but its ADF does not scan both sides in one pass. If automatic two-sided scanning is essential, these specifications do not support assuming that the MFC-L2820DW will provide it.
3. Match the paper tray to your routine
The Brother models and HP Tank MFP each have a 250-sheet tray. The Canon has a smaller 150-sheet cassette. A larger tray means fewer interruptions when printing regular documents, but it does not by itself make one printer cheaper to own or better at every task.
4. Do not estimate ownership cost from page yield alone
Brother identifies TN830, TN830XL, and TN830V as the toner family for the HL-L2460DW and MFC-L2820DW. These printers also use a separate DR830 drum rated at approximately 15,000 pages. The drum is not the same thing as the toner cartridge, and eventually it is a separate maintenance purchase.
For the HL-L2460DW, Brother lists an approximately 700-page starter cartridge, while RTINGS reports approximately 1,300 pages from the standard cartridge in its testing and roughly 3,300 pages from the high-yield option. For the MFC-L2820DW, RTINGS reports approximately 1,300 pages from the standard toner in its test setup.

These numbers should be treated as standardized estimates. Brother says its yields are based on ISO/IEC 19752 and that actual pages vary with toner coverage, paper or other media, and the characteristics of the print job. A page containing dense black graphics will consume more toner than a lightly printed text page.
There is no defensible universal lowest cost per page from the available information. Retail cartridge prices, drum prices, page coverage, discounts, and print volume all change. Compare the price and rated yield of the exact replacement toner and drum available in your market rather than relying on the printer’s purchase price alone.
For routine replenishment, owners of either recommended Brother model can look for TN830XL toner when the high-yield cartridge’s price and availability make sense. The separate DR830 drum unit is a maintenance item, not something most owners should expect to replace frequently.
5. Check connections before choosing a location
The MFC-L2820DW and HL-L2460DW offer dual-band Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and USB. The HP offers wireless and Ethernet, and the Canon offers Wi-Fi Direct, USB, and Ethernet. Wireless is convenient, while Ethernet can be useful when the printer is near a router or network point and you want a wired connection. The HL-L2460DW also supports Apple AirPrint and Mopria according to RTINGS’ testing summary.

For the HP LaserJet Tank MFP 2604sdw specifically, RTINGS found USB considerably faster than Wi-Fi in its testing. If you routinely send large print jobs, plan the printer’s location with a wired connection in mind rather than assuming wireless will perform identically.

Supplies and setup considerations
Before ordering, confirm the exact model suffix, regional version, toner family, and seller. For the Brother HL-L2460DW and MFC-L2820DW, the relevant toner family is TN830/TN830XL/TN830V and the separate drum is DR830. Keep ordinary laser printer paper available if the printer will be used for home-office forms, estimates, invoices, or other routine documents; paper type and print coverage can affect the practical result even though they do not change the printer’s advertised specification.

If you are buying for a construction business or home workshop, these models are best evaluated as document printers for bids, change orders, invoices, checklists, correspondence, and forms. Do not assume that a home-office monochrome printer is suitable for full-size construction drawings or specialty media without checking the model’s supported paper sizes and media specifications separately.
