For most people shopping for an “atomic clock,” the practical choice is a WWVB radio-controlled clock: it receives a time signal and sets itself, rather than containing an atomic clock. Compare supported time zones and daylight-saving settings, display and placement, and how the clock indicates synchronization. Reception depends on the signal reaching the clock indoors, so even a compatible model may not sync reliably in every building.
What “atomic clock” means on a consumer clock
In consumer listings, “atomic clock” usually means a radio-controlled clock that receives a broadcast time signal. NIST explains that the label is common, but technically imprecise: the clock receives a signal from a location where an atomic clock is present; it does not ordinarily contain an atomic oscillator. NIST’s WWVB guidance addresses these consumer clocks, while its atomic-clock overview explains the separate technology used to define time.
In the United States, these clocks commonly receive WWVB, NIST’s radio station near Fort Collins, Colorado. It broadcasts a coded time message at 60 kHz. The message takes a full minute to transmit, and a new clock can take longer than a minute—and sometimes five minutes or more—to set, depending on reception and receiver design. NIST’s 2009 recommended-practice guide describes the signal as one bit per second, or 60 seconds for a complete code.
The atomic clock is at the source of the time reference, not inside the typical consumer device. NIST states that a second is defined using 9,192,631,770 cycles of cesium radiation; that figure defines the SI second and is not a measurement of a consumer clock’s accuracy or operating frequency.

#1 Best Overall
- Atomic Clock Digital - The clock has a built-in receiver that automatically synchronizes itself with WWVB radio broadcast, which will set and update time automatically every midnight, no need to set manually. It has four time zones selectable: EST, PST, MST, CST.
- Digital Wall Clock Battery Operated - This digital clock is supported by 3xAAA battery (Not included). No wires make it can be placed anywhere; and the low battery symbol reminds you to replace the battery in time to avoid getting the wrong time due to low power.
- Digital Wall Clock Large Display - The LCD screen measures 6.2 in x 3.7 in and it displays time, indoor temperature, day and date. Each section is showed separately, allows you to read the content easily and quickly.
- Atomic Clock with Auto DST - With DST on, the time would go forward or backward one hour automatically in daylight saving time, no worry about time changing on that day. If for no need, it could also be turned off, then “AUTO DST” disappears from screen.
- Digital Alarm Clock - The alarm could be turned on or off according to your need, just click the button to set. When alarm is set on, there is a bell icon staying on screen. The icon will disappear if alarm is set off. When alarm goes off, just click any button to stop it on the day.
What to compare before choosing one
There is no verified market-wide “best clock” ranking or independently tested model comparison in the cited NIST material. Choose by matching the clock’s documented features to where and how you will use it.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Time-zone selection and daylight-saving control | A clock set to the wrong zone or an unsupported daylight-saving option can display the wrong local time. Check the manual for your location, especially in Hawaii, Arizona, or outside the four common continental U.S. zones. |
| Synchronization indicator and retry behavior | An indicator can help distinguish failed reception from ordinary local timekeeping. Models differ in how often they attempt to synchronize; check the instructions rather than assuming every clock updates on the same schedule. |
| Display and form factor | NIST identifies wall clocks, desk clocks, travel alarms, and watches as consumer forms. Choose a display suited to the room, viewing distance, and whether you need an alarm or portability. |
| Reception needs and placement | Coverage information is a guide, not a guarantee of reception inside a specific building. Nearby electronics, metal construction, and the clock’s position can affect the signal. |
| Setup and recovery instructions | Look for clear instructions on initial setup, time zones, daylight saving, synchronization status, and what to do after a failed update. |
How the clock sets and keeps time
The receiver decodes WWVB’s one-minute time message and applies the clock’s configured time-zone correction. Many clocks attempt to synchronize overnight; NIST says most resynchronize once per day, while some check more often. A clock then relies on its internal quartz oscillator between successful updates.

- Atomic Wall Clock Never Need Setting: Atomic clock has a built-in receiver that automatically synchronizes itself with the WWVB radio broadcast by the US Government's National Institute (NIST) in Fort Collins, Colorado. The Atomic Clock will always be accurate to within one second as it receives daily WWVB updates. (No Backlight)
- Atomic Clock with Indoor/Outdoor Temp: The Wireless outdoor sensor transmits the outdoor temperature to the atomic clock. The sensor should be placed within 100ft of the clock. Also, clock has a built-in high-quality indoor temperature sensor so that you can read the temperature both indoor and outdoor
- Digital Wall Clock Large Display: Jumbo 2.5 inch Height Time Digital Display - Use as either a wall clock or as a desk clock, it is easy to read, easy to Use and easy to set up. This atomic clock has been designed with absolute simplicity in mind, you can also set it manually. Excellent clocks for seniors, suitable for anyplace in your home or office
- Atomic Clock Digital: 12/24 Hour time formats with accurate and clear second minute and hour display; 4 time zone to choose (PST, MST, CST, EST); auto daylight saving time; temperature display units in Celsius or Fahrenheit
- Digital Wall Clock Battery Operated: Both clock and outdoor sensor are supported by batteries only, no need to plug or charge (Batteries not included). The existed alarm features can wake you up in the morning or help you keep track of dates and days of the week to avoid missing any important meetings or appointments
NIST says a typical quartz crystal can keep time within one second for a few days or longer between updates. That is a qualified description, not a guarantee for every model. If reception fails for longer, accuracy depends on the clock’s crystal; some quartz clocks may drift by several seconds per day.
Reception limits in homes and buildings
WWVB should work in most of North America, and its coverage expands at night, but geographic coverage does not ensure indoor reception. Local interference, signal-to-noise conditions, receiver design, and building materials all matter. Metal roofs or siding can make reception difficult or prevent synchronization altogether.

For a construction setting, placement deserves particular attention: a clock that works near a window may fail deeper inside a building or behind metal construction. Consider whether you can place it where a signal is more likely to reach it, and whether its display remains visible from the intended work area.
What to do if it will not synchronize
- Check power. Replace or check the batteries, then allow the clock time to receive the full signal. A complete code takes one minute, and initial setup can take longer depending on reception and receiver design.
- Change the position. Rotate a desk clock or move a wall clock. Try a window or a wall facing Fort Collins, Colorado, and move the clock away from computer monitors.
- Test for interference or shielding. NIST suggests testing outdoors at night. If the clock receives the signal outside but not inside, local interference or building shielding is a likely factor.
- Check the displayed time settings. If the clock is off by an hour, verify the time zone and daylight-saving setting. If it is off by minutes or seconds, it may not have synchronized recently and may be running from its quartz oscillator; on an analog clock, check hand alignment as well.
Choosing with realistic expectations
A WWVB radio-controlled wall clock is the most direct fit for someone who wants a self-setting wall clock. Treat “atomic” as a familiar consumer label, not a promise that the device contains an atomic oscillator or will receive a signal in every room. Read the manual for supported time zones, daylight-saving behavior, synchronization indicators, and recovery steps, then choose a display and placement suited to the space.
