A portable HEPA air purifier may reduce airborne particles and allergens in the room where it runs, which may help some people with allergy symptoms. It is not proven to reliably clear a stuffy nose, and it cannot remove every pollutant or treat every cause of nasal congestion. Choose a unit by the room it will serve and its particle-cleaning performance, and use it alongside sensible source control and ventilation.
Can an air purifier help a stuffy nose?
Possibly, if airborne allergens are contributing to your symptoms. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says studies of portable HEPA air cleaners have found improvement in one or more allergy or asthma symptoms, but the improvements were not always major and did not occur for all symptoms. That evidence does not establish a purifier as a stand-alone treatment for nasal congestion or guarantee relief from a stuffy nose, runny nose, or sinus pressure. EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home
A purifier filters air in the room or area it serves; it does not address every possible cause of congestion. Allergic rhinitis can cause a stuffy nose, but similar or recurring symptoms can have other causes. Seasonal allergies are commonly associated with airborne pollen and mold spores; year-round allergic rhinitis may involve dust mites, pet dander, cockroaches, or mold. Smoke, perfumes, and cleaning products can also aggravate nasal symptoms. ACAAI’s air-filter guidance and ACAAI’s hay fever guidance describe these triggers and symptom overlap.
What to look for in a portable air purifier
Match CADR to the room
For a portable particle cleaner, compare its Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) with the size of the room or open area you want it to serve. A larger area or high ceiling may call for a larger unit or more than one unit. A purifier cannot clean air effectively throughout a home simply because it is placed in one room.

- AHAM VERIFIDE, PROVEN PERFORMANCE: AHAM VERIFIDE with a CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) rating of 143 CFM for smoke, 153 CFM for dust, and 167 CFM for pollen—refreshing air in a 222 ft² room 4.8 times per hour and a 1,073 ft² room once per hour
- GENUINE REPLACEMENT FILTERS: For the best performance and longest lifespan, use official Levoit filters designed specifically for Levoit air purifiers. Levoit replacement filters ensure the best fit and high-efficiency filtration, while off-brand filters may be unreliable and may damage your Levoit air purifier
- FIND COMFORT: Our filter has strong filtration performance of fine particles. 99.97% filtration efficiency for 0.1 to 0.3μm airborne particulates, including pollen, dust, and animal dander allergens. Tested by an independent lab
EPA notes that CADR is typically measured at a cleaner’s highest speed. If you plan to run the unit on a quieter setting, do not assume it will deliver the same particle-cleaning performance. The tobacco-smoke CADR represents the smallest of the example particle categories; dust and pollen represent medium and larger particles. CADR is a particle rating, not proof of gas or odor removal. EPA’s CADR guidance
Choose a setting you can live with
Higher fan speeds and longer operation generally move and filter more air, but noise may make the highest setting impractical for some rooms. Compare the noise at the speed you expect to use, rather than choosing on maximum CADR alone. Place the unit in a room where you spend time and keep its airflow unobstructed. EPA advises keeping it away from curtains and redirecting airflow if it creates an uncomfortable draft.

Check filter needs and system compatibility
Review the replacement-filter type and the manufacturer’s instructions before buying. Filter compatibility and replacement timing depend on the model; there is no universal interval established for every purifier. Dirty or overloaded filters work poorly.
Activated carbon or another absorbent material may be relevant when gases or odors are a concern, but performance depends on the filter material. EPA notes there is no widely used performance-rating system for gas removal in portable cleaners, so a particle CADR number should not be treated as evidence of gas removal.

How the main indoor-air options compare
| Option | What it serves | What to check | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portable room air cleaner | One room or area | CADR for the room; particle filter; noise at a usable speed; replacement-filter needs | Does not remove every pollutant; performance depends on room size, speed, and placement. |
| Central HVAC filter | Air circulated by a compatible home HVAC system | Correct size, system compatibility, filter efficiency, and airflow requirements | HVAC systems are different; check the equipment or manufacturer guidance rather than assuming any higher-rated filter will work. |
| Source control and ventilation | Pollutant sources and air exchange | Identify and reduce a source where practical; ventilate with clean outdoor air when appropriate | Outdoor air quality and circumstances affect whether ventilation is appropriate. |
EPA says, “The most effective ways to improve your indoor air are to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and to ventilate with clean outdoor air.” Filtration is a supplement to those steps, not a replacement. EPA’s indoor-air guidance
Use a purifier safely and maintain it
- Avoid ozone-generating devices. Ozone irritates the lungs. Some ionizers, electrostatic precipitators, certain UV designs, and plasma devices may have ozone-emission potential; check the device information and avoid cleaners that intentionally produce ozone.
- Follow the filter instructions. Replace or maintain filters as the manufacturer directs. A dirty or overloaded filter will not work well.
- Give the unit room to move air. Keep its intake and outlet clear, place it away from curtains, and redirect airflow if it feels like an uncomfortable draft.
- Use it where it matters. A portable unit serves the room or area where it operates; choose a room where you spend time rather than assuming it treats the entire home.
These cautions and placement recommendations are from the EPA Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.

When to look beyond an air purifier
If congestion seems related to allergies or keeps recurring, an allergist can help identify triggers and discuss appropriate treatment. ACAAI identifies intranasal corticosteroids as the single most effective drug class for allergic rhinitis; that is general guidance, not a recommendation for a particular medicine or dose. A clinician can advise what is suitable for you. Persistent or concerning nasal symptoms deserve medical advice because a purifier does not identify or treat their underlying cause.
