For a stationary shower-door joint, use a bathroom-rated silicone sealant whose manufacturer approves it for the joint and the surfaces involved. Dow lists DOWSIL Tub/Tile/Ceramic Sealant for shower enclosures and shower doors. But if the leak comes from a loose or worn sweep, replace it with a seal that fits the door rather than trying to glue the problem away.
First identify what is leaking
Fixed joint or perimeter seam
A stationary joint between compatible, nonporous surfaces needs a sealant designed for bathroom use. Dow describes DOWSIL Tub/Tile/Ceramic Sealant as a one-part silicone sealant for nonporous applications requiring a mildew-resistant sealant, and lists shower enclosures and shower doors among its uses. That makes it a supported example for an appropriate fixed joint, not a universal choice for every door or material.
Worn, loose, or missing sweep
A sweep or other fitted door seal is a replaceable component, not simply a caulk joint. Find a replacement compatible with the glass thickness, door profile, and installation. A Byretech seal kit is one manufacturer-specific example; its existence does not establish compatibility with other doors. Do not assume an adhesive bead can reproduce the fit or function of the designed seal.
How to choose a sealant for a fixed joint
- Confirm the intended use. Choose a product whose label or technical information explicitly supports shower or bath joints, rather than relying on words such as “door” or “waterproof” in the name.
- Check every substrate. Verify compatibility with the actual glass, tile, metal finish, plastic, stone, or coating involved, and check the enclosure maker’s instructions as well as the sealant maker’s.
- Match the joint’s function. Sealant is for a stationary water barrier; it is not a substitute for a moving or replaceable sweep.
- Follow the product’s cure directions. Cure and return-to-use times vary by product and conditions. Dow lists a 24-hour room-temperature cure property for its Tub/Tile/Ceramic Sealant; check the package for the directions that apply to your installation.
- Choose color and format last. Once use and compatibility are established, select a suitable color and application format.
Why the exact product label matters
Products with similar names may have different limits. Henkel’s technical information for GE Supreme Silicone Window & Door excludes use under shower-door tracks and in continuous water contact. Its “Window & Door” name does not make it appropriate for those shower applications.

- Clear Silicone Sealant & Adhesive: Is A General Purpose Sealant Adhesive, Rtv (Room Temperature Vulcanized)Silicone Designed For Use In Household Or Mechanical Assembly Applications.
Nor does the product example establish a comparative winner. Available manufacturer guidance supports silicone for certain stationary shower joints, but does not show that one sealant is best for every enclosure, surface, or failure.
Prepare and apply it according to the chosen product
- Check the enclosure instructions. Use the specific door or enclosure guide to determine where sealant belongs. The surfaced Sterling installation guide says to clean and dry the shower-base ledge and bottom track and to follow the sealant manufacturer’s instructions. It does not establish a universal map for caulking every seam.
- Prepare the surfaces. Follow the selected sealant’s preparation requirements. For Sika Forever, Sika UK’s instructions say surfaces must be sound, clean, and dry.
- Apply and tool the sealant as directed. Sika Forever’s instructions call for tooling within 15 minutes. That timing applies to that product’s instructions, not necessarily to other sealants.
- Keep the shower out of use for the required time. Sika UK says to allow 24 hours before using the bath or shower for Sika Forever. Dow lists a 24-hour room-temperature cure property for Tub/Tile/Ceramic Sealant. These are product-specific manufacturer details; follow the exact label and conditions for the sealant you use.
When replacement is the better repair
If the leak is around a moving door edge or comes from a damaged, detached, or poorly fitting strip, identify the seal profile and glass dimensions and source a compatible replacement. If the leak is at a stationary joint, check the sealant and enclosure guidance before resealing. When the source is unclear, locating it first avoids applying sealant to a component that needs to move or be replaced.
