How to choose between the documented options
Start with the bread you actually buy
- For long slices, prioritize an explicitly long-slot design, then confirm the slot’s usable length. “Long slot” is useful guidance but does not tell you whether an unusually long slice will fit.
- For thick slices or bagels, check slot width. KitchenAid specifies 1½-inch-wide slots for the KMT4116; Breville describes the BTA730 as accommodating thick bagels but does not list a width on its product page.
- If your bread is both long and thick, verify both dimensions rather than assuming one advertised feature covers both.
Match capacity to the slot arrangement
Four-slice capacity does not guarantee four oversized pieces will fit. Confirm whether the toaster uses two long slots or four separate openings, and consider how many of your larger slices can be toasted in one cycle. The manufacturer descriptions establish the BTA730 as both long-slot and four-slice; check the exact layout of any other model in its current listing.

Lift-and-check features can help you inspect toast without ending the cycle, and an extra-time button can be convenient when a slice needs longer. Account for cleaning and counter space
A removable crumb tray makes crumbs easier to collect. Check where it is located and whether you can reach it in your intended placement. Long-slot models can take up substantial counter space: Breville lists the BTA730 at 21.8 × 43 × 21.4 cm, while KitchenAid lists the KMT4116 at 16.5 W × 7.7 D × 8.0 H inches. Compare width, depth, and height with your available space, and allow for the cord and access to controls.
