The best choice depends on a home-specific load calculation, the matched indoor and outdoor equipment, ductwork, climate, and—if you choose a heat pump—heating performance. The systems below are documented candidates to discuss with a qualified HVAC contractor, not a ranking based on independent testing.
What does 2.5 tons mean?
In air conditioning, a ton measures cooling capacity, not the physical weight of the equipment. One ton is 12,000 BTU per hour, so a nominal 2.5-ton system is rated at 30,000 BTU/h. That is a capacity label; actual output can vary with the equipment and operating conditions.
For example, Rheem lists its Endeavor WSA14AZ30AJ1NA as a 2.5-ton air conditioner with 30,000 BTU/h nominal capacity, while also listing a 17.1–27.5 kBTU cooling-capacity range for the series. Do not assume the nominal tonnage is the system’s exact output in every condition. Rheem’s product page lists efficiency up to 15.2 SEER2 and 12 EER2.
How many square feet will a 2.5-ton AC cool?
Square-foot estimates are a rough screening tool, not a sizing method. Carrier gives 1,200–1,500 square feet in one passage and 1,000–1,500 square feet in its comparison table. That variation is a reason not to treat either range as a promise. Insulation, climate, ceiling height, windows, layout, and other features affect the cooling load. Ask the contractor to calculate the home’s load rather than choose by square footage, existing equipment size, or a generic rule of thumb. A 2.5-ton replacement may be appropriate—or it may not be, even if the old system had the same nominal capacity.
Why correct sizing matters
- Oversizing: The system may cool the home quickly and shut off before removing enough humidity. It can also short-cycle. Carrier cautions that moving from a 2-ton to a 2.5-ton system is appropriate only if the home needs the additional capacity and the ductwork can handle the airflow.
- Undersizing: The system may run for long periods and struggle to reach the set temperature, particularly on hot days.
These risks apply to the system’s fit with the home, not just the nominal tonnage. Ask the contractor to explain the calculated load, proposed capacity, and whether the existing ducts can support the equipment. Documented 2.5-ton system examples
These examples illustrate different equipment types and published specifications. They are not a head-to-head test or a ranking. A product-family specification does not establish that a particular indoor/outdoor match will achieve the same rating in your installation.

What to compare before choosing
Capacity and the load calculation
Request the Manual J calculation and ask how it leads to the proposed equipment capacity. The goal is a system suited to the home’s load, not simply the closest available match to the old unit’s tonnage.

SEER2 and EER2
Compare the efficiency of the exact matched system, not an isolated product-family “up to” figure. ENERGY STAR defines SEER2 as the heat removed over an annual cooling season divided by electrical energy consumed, using the specified test procedure. It is a standardized seasonal measure, not a promise about a particular home’s energy bill. ENERGY STAR’s central air conditioner guidance explains the measure.
Heating performance for heat pumps
If considering a heat pump, compare heating capacity at temperatures relevant to your climate, not just the headline nominal rating. Ask whether the proposed system needs supplemental heat and how it will be controlled. Panasonic, for example, lists 19,100 Btu of heating capacity at 5°F for the M30BAHU system; that is a manufacturer specification for that model, not a general prediction for other heat pumps.

System and home compatibility
Central ducted air conditioners and heat pumps, packaged systems, and ductless systems have different installation and air-distribution requirements. Confirm the indoor and outdoor model match, coil or air-handler compatibility, refrigerant, electrical supply, controls, and duct capacity. A 2.5-ton label does not establish that equipment will fit existing ducts or that separate components will deliver a stated system rating.
Written installation scope and warranty
Request comparable written quotes that identify the matched indoor and outdoor models, labor, electrical or duct modifications, startup and commissioning, warranty conditions, and exclusions. Product specifications alone do not establish a fair installed price; costs depend on location and project scope, and the cited product information does not provide a current cross-market price comparison.

Questions to take to an HVAC contractor
- Can you provide the Manual J load calculation and explain the proposed capacity?
- What are the exact indoor and outdoor model numbers, and what is the matched system’s SEER2 and EER2?
- Will the existing ductwork handle the required airflow, and are any changes included in the quote?
- For a heat pump, what heating capacity is available at local winter temperatures, and is supplemental heat required?
- What commissioning, warranty registration, labor coverage, and exclusions apply?
