A refrigerator labeled “33-inch” is not guaranteed to fit a 33-inch opening. Published widths in this category range from 32.75 inches to 33 1/8 inches, before required installation clearance. Measure the opening and compare it with the exact model’s installation guide before ordering.
The available 2026 sources identify several useful candidates and explain how to assess fit, but they do not establish 11 currently available, independently tested winners. Rather than present an unsupported ranking, this guide compares documented examples and gives you a practical way to narrow the field.

“33-inch” is a product category, not a promise that the refrigerator measures exactly 33 inches or will fit an opening that does. For example, GE lists a 32.75-inch width for its GSE23GYPFS, while Frigidaire lists two 33-inch-category side-by-side models at 33 1/8 inches wide. A 33 1/8-inch appliance cannot fit into a true 33-inch opening without changing the opening.
Even when the cabinet is narrower than the opening, the installation guide may require space at the sides, top, or rear. Check the exact model’s specifications and installation instructions; do not rely on the category name, a retailer filter, or a general brand fit guide.

These are different model numbers; do not transfer a capacity, fit claim, or recommendation from one suffix to the other. Yale Appliance 2025 guide.
How to check whether a refrigerator will fit
- Measure the opening in several places. Record width at the top, middle, and bottom; height at both sides; and depth to the cabinetry and countertop edge. Note trim, baseboards, wall returns, uneven flooring, or other obstructions that reduce usable space.
- Compare with the exact model’s installation guide. Check the appliance’s actual width, height, and depth, plus the required side, top, and rear clearances. As one model-specific example, LG’s LF25S6560S sheet calls for 1/8 inch on each side, 1 inch above, and 2 inches behind. Those numbers are not a universal rule for 33-inch refrigerators. Read the LG specification sheet.
- Check depth and access, not just cabinet alignment. Find the model’s depth with doors and handles, and consider how far it projects into the room. Counter-depth and standard-depth models serve different layout needs, but the category alone does not establish capacity or projection. Compare the specific model’s dimensions and usable capacity with your aisle and storage needs.
- Test door, drawer, and hinge-side clearance. Consider the refrigerator in its installed position: nearby walls, islands, cabinets, and counters can prevent doors or freezer drawers from opening fully. Confirm the hinge side and the manufacturer’s required swing clearance.
- Check water and ventilation space. For an ice or water dispenser, locate the water line and shutoff valve and account for the space required behind the refrigerator. Use filters specified for the exact model number rather than choosing by brand alone.
- Measure the delivery route. Check the entry door, interior doors, hallways, turns, stairways, and elevator. Ask the seller whether handles or doors can be removed to move the unit and who is responsible for removing, reinstalling, and reconnecting them.
- Confirm local stock and installation terms. Ask for the exact model number on the order and verify current availability, delivery access, installation, and haul-away arrangements. Online product pages can remain available after a model is discontinued, as GE’s GSE23GYPFS page illustrates.
Choosing a layout and depth
French-door and bottom-freezer models
These layouts place fresh food above the freezer. The cited examples include GE’s counter-depth French-door GWE19JYLFS and Maytag’s 33-inch bottom-mount family. Compare door swing, drawer travel, exact capacity, and model-specific clearances rather than assuming all models in either style fit the same way.
Side-by-side models
Side-by-side refrigerators divide fresh and frozen food vertically. The cited examples include GE’s discontinued GSE23GYPFS, Frigidaire’s GRSS2352AF and FRSS2323AS, and Amana’s ASI2175GRS. Their published widths illustrate why the nominal 33-inch label is not enough: the Frigidaire models and Amana example are listed at 33 1/8 inches wide.
Counter-depth versus standard-depth
Counter-depth models may reduce how far the cabinet projects into the kitchen, while standard-depth models may extend farther. The actual difference depends on the model and how the manufacturer measures it. Compare depth with doors and handles, capacity, required clearances, and the aisle available in your kitchen; do not assume every counter-depth refrigerator has less capacity by the same amount.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—say about “best”
Consumer Reports’ article updated June 7, 2026 is described in its search-result excerpt as using extended temperature testing. The excerpt says the organization monitors refrigerator thermocouples for more than a month and collects more than 5.4 million temperature readings per tested refrigerator. It attributes to OpenBrand the estimate that about 8% of refrigerators come in a 33-inch width, but gives no year for that market figure. The accessible excerpt names three models, not a complete set of 11 picks or comparable scores for every candidate above. Consumer Reports’ 2026 article.
That testing-method description does not establish that any particular candidate in this guide is a winner. The manufacturer specifications and selection guides establish useful features and dimensions, while the retailer-authored Yale guide offers comparison leads; neither supplies a common, independently verified performance score for all eleven candidates. No universal reliability winner, current local price, or stock status follows from these sources.
Quick Recap
Before you place the order
- Match the complete model number, including every suffix, across the listing, specification sheet, and installation guide.
- Make sure the measured opening accommodates both the appliance and the model’s required clearances.
- Check the refrigerator’s full depth and door/drawer movement in the actual kitchen layout.
- Confirm water-line location and delivery access if applicable.
- Verify that the model is currently sold and available in your area; distinguish new production from discontinued or clearance stock.
