11 Clever Ways to Conserve Water at Home

You can conserve water at home with a mix of no-cost habits, quick leak checks, efficient fixtures and better outdoor watering. Start by checking for leaks and changing daily routines; consider purchases only when replacing a fixture or managing an automatic irrigation system. Water restrictions and utility rebates vary by location, so check your water provider or municipality before changing outdoor schedules or buying equipment.

Start by finding and fixing leaks

Leaks can waste water even when they are hidden. Compare your water bill with the same period last year, then check the meter or inspect likely trouble spots. EPA WaterSense recommends these checks in its home maintenance guidance.

1. Check your bill and water meter

Look for an unexplained jump in usage. To check the meter, avoid using water for two hours, note the reading, and check it again. If the reading changes while water is not being used, a leak is likely. If you cannot identify the cause, contact your water provider or a qualified plumber.

2. Test the toilet for a silent leak

Add a few drops of food coloring or a dye tablet to the toilet tank without flushing. Wait 10 minutes. If color appears in the bowl, water is likely leaking from the tank. Flush afterward to clear the dye.

3. Repair a running or leaking toilet

A worn flapper can prevent the toilet tank from sealing properly and cause a leak that is easy to miss. EPA recommends replacing toilet flappers at least every five years to help maintain a good seal. If the dye test indicates a leak, inspect the flapper and replace it if it is worn; seek help if the leak persists.

4. Fix dripping faucets and showerheads

Check faucets and showerheads for drips and loose connections. For a loose showerhead connection, EPA advises tightening it with a wrench and using pipe tape if needed. If you are unsure how to make the repair or the leak continues, contact a qualified plumber.

Build water-saving habits into daily routines

5. Turn off the tap while brushing or shaving

Letting water run while brushing your teeth or shaving uses water without helping with the task. Turn off the tap while you brush or shave, then turn it on when you need to rinse. EPA includes this as a simple bathroom-saving habit in its water-saving guidance.

6. Keep showers brief

Shorter showers use less water, and EPA says showers use less than baths when shower time is kept in check. If you are replacing a showerhead, look for a WaterSense label; the certification covers water efficiency and performance. EPA estimates that replacing showerheads with WaterSense-labeled models saves an average family more than 2,700 gallons per year. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed saving for every household; actual results depend on use.

7. Run the dishwasher only when full—and scrape, don’t rinse

Wait until the dishwasher is full before running it, and scrape food scraps into the trash or compost rather than rinsing plates under the tap. EPA says dishwashers typically use less water than hand washing and recommends both habits.

Choose efficient fixtures when it is time to replace them

8. Look for WaterSense-labeled bathroom fixtures

When replacing a showerhead, faucet or toilet, use the WaterSense label as a starting point. Check the specific model’s certification and whether it fits your plumbing and preferences; generic “low-flow” wording alone does not confirm WaterSense certification. EPA recommends labeled fixtures as a way to improve water efficiency. Compare purchase cost and compatibility before choosing, and check with your utility or municipality for any available rebates.

Use outdoor water more carefully

9. Inspect irrigation for leaks and overspray

Check sprinkler heads and irrigation lines for leaks, breaks or water spraying onto pavement instead of planted areas. Also look for signs of overwatering or underwatering. Repair damaged parts and adjust coverage or timing as needed. EPA’s maintenance guidance recommends checking irrigation systems and correcting problems.

10. Use an appropriate controller for automatic sprinklers

If your home has automatic sprinklers, a WaterSense-labeled controller may help schedule watering according to local weather or soil moisture rather than relying only on a fixed clock schedule. Before choosing one, check compatibility with your existing system and follow local watering rules. EPA estimates that replacing a clock-based controller with a WaterSense-labeled irrigation controller can save an average home up to 30 percent of irrigation water, or up to 15,000 gallons per year. These are upper estimates, not guaranteed results for an individual property.

11. Adjust watering to local conditions

Use your system only as needed for your landscape, and avoid watering when rain or local conditions make it unnecessary. Check your utility or municipality for current watering restrictions and guidance; rules can differ by location and season. EPA WaterSense also shares irrigation guidance through The WaterSense Current.

Decide what to do first

  • No-cost first steps: Check your bill and meter, test the toilet, turn off the tap while brushing or shaving, take shorter showers, and wait for a full dishwasher load.
  • Simple repairs: Address a failed toilet dye test, dripping faucet, loose showerhead connection or visible irrigation damage. A persistent or complex leak may need a qualified plumber.
  • When replacing equipment: Compare the specific fixture’s WaterSense certification, compatibility, performance preferences and price.
  • For automatic irrigation: Check the system’s condition, controller compatibility and local rules before changing settings or buying a controller.
