Before buying, check your exact vehicle’s owner manual and make sure the outlet’s current limit exceeds the kettle’s draw. A “12V” label alone does not guarantee a safe match.
How to choose a 12V travel kettle
Start with the amount of water you need per use, then compare the published heating time for that volume. Also check the kettle’s current draw against the rating of the specific outlet you plan to use, plus its plug fit, cord reach, care instructions, and stated safety features. Published heating times below are manufacturer or retailer claims, not results of independent comparative testing.

Match capacity to how you’ll use it
A larger capacity is not automatically more useful: heating more water may mean waiting longer. If you usually need one drink, compare the time stated for a smaller volume rather than focusing only on the maximum capacity. If you need several servings, a full-litre figure may be more relevant.
Look closely at safety and everyday fit
Check what the manufacturer actually says about automatic shutoff and dry-boil protection; these terms are not interchangeable, and not every listing documents both. Confirm that the plug fits the outlet, that the cord reaches without strain, and that the care instructions suit how you’ll clean it. Do not treat the kettle’s fuse rating as proof that your vehicle outlet can support its current draw.

Check your vehicle’s outlet rating before plugging in
There is no single outlet rating that applies to every car, truck, or RV. The cited Ford owner-manual example gives a maximum of 15A and warns against exceeding 12V DC 180W; it also cautions that prolonged use while parked can drain the battery. Kia’s 2026 owner manual says to use the outlet only when the vehicle is on, remove the plug after use, and keep accessories below 15A. These are instructions for particular vehicle configurations, not universal limits. Read the owner manual for your own vehicle’s year, model, market, and outlet.
Travel Time lists its kettle at 14A. That is close to the 15A limits in the cited Ford and Kia examples, so check compatibility carefully rather than assuming that a nominally 12V outlet is suitable. Account for any other devices connected to the same outlet or circuit, as directed by your vehicle manual. Do not bypass a fuse or use an adapter to defeat an outlet rating.

Ford’s owner-manual power-outlet precautions state: “Do not use the power point over the vehicle capacity of 12 V DC 180 W or a fuse could blow.” Kia’s 2026 owner manual says: “Use the power outlet only when the vehicle is ON, and remove the accessory plug after use.” Follow the documentation for your own vehicle if its guidance differs from these examples.

Vehicle manufacturers warn that accessories can discharge the battery, especially during prolonged parked use. Kia’s 2026 guidance is to use the outlet only while the vehicle is on and remove the plug after use. Follow your vehicle manual’s instructions; do not leave a kettle plugged in when it is not being used.
