Yes. Chile’s battery-energy storage system (BESS) fleet is already absorbing surplus renewable generation and shifting it into evening demand. Data presented by the Chilean Renewable Energy Association (ACERA) show solar and wind curtailment fell year over year in August 2026 for the first time in four years. From January through August, 70% of the 2,900GWh of renewable electricity produced was charged by batteries. The improvement is significant, but it does not mean storage has solved curtailment: 2,680GWh had still been curtailed through July, and transmission, demand and system-flexibility limits remain.
How much battery storage is operating in Chile?
ACERA’s October 2026 figures, reported by Energy-Storage.News, put Chile’s operating BESS fleet at 3.1GW/13.5GWh. About 2.3GW/10.5GWh of that operating capacity is co-located with solar photovoltaic plants, allowing batteries to capture midday output and dispatch it later.

The same October update identified 3.7GW of BESS in testing and already dispatching to the grid, plus 5.1GW/22GWh under construction. A separate ACERA snapshot published in July used an earlier reporting cutoff and counted 2,655MW/11,250MWh operating, 3,151MW/14,698MWh testing and 5,040MW/21,721MWh under construction.

The difference between the July and October totals reflects projects moving through commissioning and changes in the reporting date, not necessarily a sudden addition of the entire gap. MW describes how much power a battery can deliver at once; MWh describes how long it can sustain that output.

Will projects in testing and construction triple Chile’s installed capacity?
They could bring a near-tripling from the current operating base, but the phrase describes a pipeline scenario rather than a guaranteed buildout. Adding the October construction pipeline of 5.1GW to 3.1GW operating would produce roughly 8.2GW, about 2.6 times today’s operating power. If the 3.7GW in testing also reaches full operation, the total would approach 11.9GW.
ACERA also reported 19.9GW of environmentally approved BESS projects and 8.7GW under evaluation. Those figures represent development status, not committed capacity. The association’s July bulletin cautioned that approvals and evaluations do not ensure delivery, so financing, permits, grid connection and construction schedules still determine how much reaches commercial operation.

ACERA said 71% of capacity under construction was hybridised with solar PV, while 22% was standalone BESS. Solar hybrids directly address midday oversupply; standalone systems can be located where the grid needs flexibility, but their value depends more heavily on market signals and interconnection arrangements.
Is Chile’s curtailment actually falling?
Early indicators point in that direction, although the annual total remains large. ACERA and the Coordinador Eléctrico Nacional recorded 2,680GWh of solar and wind curtailment through July 2026. Energy-Storage.News reported that curtailment then fell year over year in August, the first such decline in four years.

ACERA said more than 6TWh was curtailed in 2025. Its estimate was that curtailment would have reached about 8TWh without the BESS already operating. That 8TWh figure is a counterfactual estimate of additional curtailment avoided, not a controlled experiment or a claim that batteries alone caused every reduction.
For January through August 2026, renewable plants produced 2,900GWh and BESS charged 70% of that volume, according to ACERA. “Charged” means electricity entered batteries; it does not mean all of that energy was immediately delivered to customers, because storage loses some energy during charging and discharge and may hold energy for a later interval.

How are batteries changing Chile’s evening peak?
BESS is moving renewable electricity from hours of high solar production to periods when demand is higher and solar output is falling. ACERA reported that batteries supplied 80% of peak energy demand in 2026, compared with zero four years earlier. ACERA executive director Ana Lía Rojas said batteries were discharging an average of nearly 1.7GW at 9pm.
That evening dispatch can reduce reliance on fossil-fuel generation and relieve pressure created when solar plants are forced to reduce output during low-demand, transmission-constrained hours. It also gives the system an operating role for storage beyond curtailment avoidance: frequency support, ramp management and capacity during the evening peak.

Where are Chile’s BESS projects concentrated?
Development is heavily weighted toward northern Chile, where strong solar resources coincide with transmission congestion and limited local demand. ACERA reported that 84% of its 11.3GW operational, construction and development portfolio was located between Arica and Atacama.
- Antofagasta: 5.4GW of the reported portfolio.
- Atacama: 2GW.
- Tarapacá: 1.6GW.
Locating batteries near surplus solar generation can reduce renewable energy that would otherwise be curtailed. However, northern storage still needs adequate transmission to move power toward central demand, and projects in the same congested zone may compete for connection capacity or deliver less value if they all charge and discharge at similar times.
What could slow the buildout?
ACERA identifies three structural constraints: transmission delays, insufficient flexibility in the electricity system and weak growth in electricity demand. Its statement on 2025 curtailment said the losses reflected “a lack of electricity demand during peak renewable energy supply hours, as well as transmission restrictions and a lack of flexibility in the electrical system.”
New projects may therefore need dependable local loads as well as a battery contract. Energy-Storage.News reported that potential anchor loads include data centres, electric-vehicle charging and desalination. Such demand can absorb electricity close to generation sites, but it must develop at a pace that matches the storage pipeline.

Rojas also warned that “the abundance of projects has some risks” for new projects coming online. A crowded queue can expose later projects to interconnection delays, lower capture prices or insufficient transmission. ACERA has described the next stage as an integration challenge rather than simply a race to add megawatts.

- Duration: Compare MWh with MW to see whether a project can cover a short evening ramp or sustain output for several hours.
- Grid location: Northern projects may have the greatest curtailment opportunity but also the greatest exposure to transmission bottlenecks.
- Project design: Solar hybrids capture surplus generation directly; standalone BESS may provide more flexible siting and grid services.
- Demand growth: New industrial, transport and desalination loads could determine whether additional storage reduces curtailment or competes for a limited set of discharge opportunities.
Chile’s operating data show that storage is already absorbing a substantial share of renewable output and serving the evening peak. The capacity pipeline is large enough to transform the fleet, but completion and system integration—not approvals alone—will determine whether the headline growth translates into sustained reductions in curtailment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the 70% charging figure mean batteries delivered 70% of renewable electricity to customers?
No. It measures the share of renewable generation that entered BESS during the January–August period. Some energy was later discharged, some remained stored at the measurement point, and charging and discharging incur conversion losses.
Why do Chilean storage reports show different operating capacities?
ACERA reports are tied to specific cut-off dates and project-status definitions. The July snapshot and October update therefore capture projects that moved from construction or testing, as well as revisions to the portfolio, rather than providing one timeless total.
Can batteries in northern Chile eliminate the need for new transmission?
No. Local storage can absorb surplus generation and shift it to later hours, but delivering electricity to central demand still depends on available transmission. Congestion can also limit the value of batteries that are clustered in the same northern zones.
What does “testing and dispatching” mean for a BESS project?
It indicates that a project is undergoing commissioning while already sending power to the grid under test or operating arrangements. It should not automatically be treated as fully commercial, fully contracted or available at its final nameplate capability.
