Avoid changing tension at random or pulling fabric against the feed. Controls, needle systems and cleaning procedures vary by machine, so treat the model-specific examples below as guidance—not universal instructions.
What to check first when a BERNINA sews poorly
- Rethread both paths. Check upper-thread threading and the bobbin’s placement and lower threading against your machine’s manual.
- Inspect the needle. Replace it if it is bent or blunt, and make sure it is inserted fully and secured in the correct orientation.
- Match needle, thread and fabric. Check the needle size and point for the material and thread. The BERNINA 580 and 780 manuals specify system 130/705H for those models; do not assume that system fits every BERNINA.
- Check tension only after threading and needle checks. Incorrect tension can affect stitching, but blindly adjusting it may not address a threading or needle problem.
- Clean only as directed. Lint or thread residue around the hook race, bobbin case, tension discs or under the bobbin-case spring can interfere with stitching. Follow the cleaning steps for your exact model; do not remove covers or parts unless its manual instructs you to.
These checks recur in the BERNINA manuals and support downloads; the details still depend on the machine.
Why is my BERNINA skipping stitches?
A needle fault or mismatch is a common place to start. Check that the needle system is correct for your model, then confirm the needle is fully inserted, straight and sharp. Its point should suit the fabric. A new, suitable needle is a sensible first check when stitches are skipped; the 580 and 780 manuals specify 130/705H, but that is not a range-wide rule.
If the needle checks out, verify upper and bobbin threading, thread quality and the needle-and-thread pairing. Consult your model’s manual for the permitted cleaning procedure if lint or thread residue may be present.

Why does the upper thread keep breaking?
Rethread the upper path carefully and check that the thread and needle are suitable for one another and for the fabric. Confirm the needle is correctly installed and undamaged, and check that upper tension is not too tight. Use serviceable thread and remove residue only from areas the manual says you may clean.
If the stitch plate or hook tip appears damaged, do not treat the problem as a tension adjustment. The BERNINA 580 manual directs owners to an authorized dealer for those faults.

Why does the bobbin thread break or cause trouble?
Check the bobbin and lower threading against your machine’s instructions. If the manual permits it, inspect the bobbin-case area for lint or thread residue and clean it using the specified method. Bobbins and tension procedures should not be assumed interchangeable between models.
The BERNINA 580 manual lists excessive lower-thread tension and a damaged stitch-plate hole among possible causes of lower-thread trouble. If the stitch-plate hole is damaged, it directs the owner to a dealer rather than a home adjustment.

Why is the needle breaking?
Make sure the needle is the right system for your machine, correctly inserted and secured. Feed fabric evenly, and do not pull or push it against the feed; forcing the material can contribute to needle breakage.
For thick seams, use an appropriate presser foot and any height compensation recommended in your model’s manual. The BERNINA 990 manual names Jeans Foot #8 as one example for thick fabric. That recommendation is model-specific, not a universal accessory requirement.

Why won’t my BERNINA start or run at the expected speed?
Begin with the power connection and socket. The BERNINA 990 manual also says that if the room is unusually hot or cold, place that machine in a warm room for one hour before use.
Controls differ by model. For example, the 770 QE PLUS Kaffe Edition support page associates slow sewing with the speed control. Check your own manual or model support page before changing settings; another machine may use different controls or troubleshooting steps.

Check the feed and stitch settings described for your model. On the 770 QE PLUS Kaffe Edition, BERNINA identifies a lowered feed dog or a very small stitch length as possible reasons the machine sews in place. The 770 QE PLUS support page also lists “The machine only sews backwards” among its troubleshooting questions. Use that model’s support instructions for the symptom rather than applying a control fix to another machine.
When should I contact a BERNINA dealer?
- The stitch plate or hook tip may be damaged, or the machine itself appears damaged.
- Basic threading, needle and manual-approved cleaning checks have not resolved the fault.
- Your machine displays a maintenance message. The Q20 manual says its scheduled maintenance message appears after the programmed service interval and recommends contacting a specialist BERNINA dealer.
The BERNINA 990 manual says to contact a dealer if the machine is damaged; the 580 manual likewise directs owners to an authorized dealer for certain suspected damage. BERNINA’s Q20 manual notes that cleaning and servicing at appropriate times supports proper function and long service life. Follow the service guidance for your own model rather than assuming a schedule applies to every machine.
