The completed facility has 18 bays, including two ACROD bays. That outcome came after a February 2024 proposal for a 17-bay car park failed on a tied council vote; the later acquisition and construction were separate steps.
Why the original proposal failed
Deputy mayor Elli Petersen-Pik proposed buying the vacant 45 Ninth Avenue site and turning it into a 17-bay car park. PerthNow reported in March 2024 that it was about 250 metres from Maylands train station and near the Whatley Crescent cafe strip. Redevelopment was estimated at up to A$65,000.
The motion failed 4–4 at the council meeting reported on 9 March 2024. PerthNow said Mayor Filomena Piffaretti attempted to use her casting vote, but it could not produce an absolute majority. Councillors Assunta Meleca, Steven Ostaszewskyj, Josh Eveson and Michelle Sutherland voted against the motion, according to the report.
What councillors disagreed about
The debate was about whether a new car park was needed to support access to Maylands businesses and residents, or whether existing parking was sufficient. Petersen-Pik argued that redevelopment could remove private parking and that some customers needed to reach the town centre by car. She said: “Until we have the right infrastructure in place to get a sufficient number of people to walk and ride to the town centre . . . we must ensure that we can provide enough parking bays.”

Eveson argued that parking was already abundant in and around the centre and said signage and line marking could help people find existing spaces. “Parking isn’t an issue in the short or medium terms in Maylands,” he said. These were competing councillor views, not measured findings: the available reporting does not establish a quantified parking shortage or surplus, or the effect of parking on local businesses.
How the site was eventually acquired
In April 2024, PerthNow reported that City staff and the land representatives had not agreed on acquisition terms, despite council having voted for the CEO to negotiate a purchase price. The City later announced on 5 September 2024 that it had purchased the vacant land after the owners decided to sell. The City’s motion progress register records settlement on 12 August 2024.

The completed Maylands car park
The City opened the project in December 2025. Its announcement says the completed car park has 18 public bays, including two ACROD bays. The finished count is one more than the 17 bays in the 2024 proposal; the proposal figure and the built facility describe different stages of the project.
The City also said 16 trees were planned for planting during its winter 2026 planting season. That was a stated plan, not confirmation that planting has been completed.
