A barrister’s bookcase plan is only useful if its sections, door mechanism and hardware match the space and build you have in mind. These plans vary: some use glass doors that pivot upward, others use doors that swing up and slide back, and another uses acrylic-paneled pocket doors. Compare the plan’s own dimensions and hardware before buying materials or cutting parts.

Choose the door mechanism before choosing hardware
Pivot-pin flip-up doors
Woodcraft’s plan uses glass doors that pivot on simple pins. This is a distinct arrangement from a door that travels back into the case. Follow that plan’s details for the door, pivot locations and clearances rather than adapting slide hardware from another design.
Doors that swing up and slide back
WoodworkersWorkshop’s 19-W2123 describes dowels at the ends of the doors, allowing them to swing upward and slide back. The listing does not provide a finished size, so review the plan’s drawings and mechanism details before laying out a room or purchasing materials.

Pocket doors
Woodshop Diaries describes acrylic-paneled pocket doors. Pocket-door construction differs from both pivot-pin and dowel arrangements; confirm the plan’s dimensions and machining details for the door pockets rather than treating it as a substitute hardware package for another plan.
Rockler’s slide-system warning
Rockler’s plan recommends a separate hardware kit, and its listing warns that some slide systems referenced in the older plan have been discontinued. Before cutting grooves or pockets, identify the currently available replacement system and confirm its dimensions and installation requirements against the plan. A kit is not necessarily compatible merely because it is sold for a barrister-style bookcase.

Check the dimensions against your room and books
The listed sizes vary by design. Woodcraft specifies a three-case stack measuring 13-3/16 inches deep, 34-3/4 inches wide and 57 inches high; Rockler lists 16 inches deep, 36 inches wide and 53 inches high. Those measurements describe separate plans, not alternate dimensions for one build. WoodworkersWorkshop also describes a modular design with approximate individual units of 15 inches high × 36.25 inches wide × 13.5 inches deep, but that is a separate listing and should not be assumed to match plan 19-W2123.
Before buying stock, check the selected plan’s completed footprint, the height and number of stackable sections, and the usable interior space each section provides. Also account for the room the doors need when opened and the location where the assembled case will stand. If a listing does not give a finished size, use the plan itself to confirm it rather than deriving one from another maker’s design.

- WoodworkersWorkshop: its listing describes full-size illustrations, exploded diagrams, lumber layouts and instructions.
- Lee Valley / American Furniture Design: the listing includes a bill of materials, cutting list, hardware requirements, jig plans where needed and finishing suggestions, but says project-specific assembly instructions are not provided.
- Woodshop Diaries: its printable PDF listing describes a cut list, diagrams and instructions; consult the page’s previews for the plan’s dimensions, tools and materials.
Plan format matters too. Woodcraft lists both paper and downloadable versions. Check the seller’s current listing for the format you want and whether the drawings or patterns need to be printed at a particular scale.

Requirements vary by design. One WoodworkersWorkshop listing says the case may be built in oak or another wood of choice and lists a table saw, clamps, router, planer, biscuit joiner, drill press, bandsaw and common hand tools. That is a plan-specific tool list, not a universal requirement for every barrister’s bookcase. Use the materials and hardware list supplied with your chosen plan to make the purchasing list, and check that your tools can perform its specified cuts.

A practical buying and build sequence
- Pick the door style. Decide whether you want pivot-pin glass doors, dowel-supported doors that swing up and slide back, or acrylic-paneled pocket doors.
- Confirm the footprint and sections. Get the selected plan’s finished dimensions and per-section dimensions; do not transfer measurements from another listing.
- Read the hardware requirements. For Rockler’s plan in particular, resolve the discontinued slide-system references and verify the replacement before machining.
- Check what the plan includes. Compare instruction detail, cut lists, diagrams, full-size patterns and whether assembly guidance is project-specific.
- Build the materials and tool list from that plan. Confirm wood, glazing or panel material, hardware and required tools before purchasing lumber.
- Recheck current seller details. Formats, availability and product information can change; confirm the current listing before ordering.
