Built between 1907 and 1911 and completed in 1911, it was designed by French architect Alexander Marcel. Its familiar “Hindu palace” label reflects only part of a design drawing on Cambodian temple architecture and Hindu temples of Orissa—not a Hindu temple’s original function.
A residence within a planned city
Empain came to Egypt in 1904 in connection with a railway project. Cairo Governorate says he acquired 6,000 acres of desert land for a planned city, Heliopolis, envisioned with infrastructure and amenities including water, drainage, electricity, hotels, a golf course, a racetrack and a park. That acreage refers to the larger development, not the palace grounds. Cairo Governorate
The palace was built as Empain’s residence, making it one part of a broader urban undertaking rather than an isolated decorative landmark. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities describes Heliopolis as a city conceived by Empain and Boghos Nubar, where Islamic, Hindu and European architectural styles came together. When was Baron Empain Palace built?
Official accounts frame the dates in complementary ways: the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities gives the construction period as 1907–1911, while Cairo Governorate and the Egyptian Presidency identify 1911 as the completion year. Cairo Governorate Egyptian Presidency

Why is it called the “Hindu palace”?
The nickname points to the building’s visual influences, not its purpose. Cairo Governorate credits French architect Alexander Marcel with the exterior design and Georges-Louis Claude with interior design and decoration. It identifies Angkor Wat in Cambodia and Hindu temples of Orissa as inspirations, and notes decorative figures including dancers, elephants, snakes, Buddhas, Shivas and Krishnas. These references indicate a combination of influences; they do not establish the palace as a direct copy of any one temple. Cairo Governorate
The Ministry describes the palace as Indian in style and notes its tower, while placing it within Heliopolis’s wider blend of architectural traditions. The building’s documented role was residential: it was a palace for Empain, not a religious building. Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities

From private residence to restored visitor site
The Egyptian Presidency describes a restoration project that assessed the building, developed conservation recommendations, examined the extent of later modifications and prepared a site-management plan supported by technical studies. The Ministry says the restored palace now houses an exhibition on Heliopolis, including archival photographs, plans, maps and information panels. Egyptian Presidency
