If you’re deciding between a backyard rink kit and building your own, start with what the kit actually includes: some provide a liner and brackets but leave the boards to you, while others are designed to work without a liner. A review by GC Tyler, marked updated August 23, 2021, favored EZ Rink and argued that kits can simplify setup and improve playability. That is the author’s dated assessment, not a documented independent comparison or a current product ranking.
What a backyard rink build needs
A traditional backyard rink needs a suitable contained area, boards or another means of holding water, water, and conditions cold enough for it to freeze. The 2021-updated review says a liner is optional, but makes construction easier. Whether you assemble the rink yourself or buy a kit, the yard and supporting structure still matter.
YardRink’s manufacturer construction guide covers site selection, wall construction, reinforcement, liner placement, and filling. It identifies slope, freezing conditions, and bracing as relevant considerations. These are manufacturer recommendations, not independent performance findings. Read YardRink’s construction guide.

| NiceRink Rink-In-A-Box | The cited Midwest Ponds listing describes a 21-by-33-foot liner and bracket system. | Sideboards are not included. The listing says to supply plywood sideboards or NiceRink plastic boards, and gives plywood sheet counts for 12-inch and 16-inch board heights. Confirm the current listing and required materials. View the cited listing. |
| Iron Sleek | The manufacturer describes a package with screws, steel brackets, corner brackets, a white liner, and instructions. | Its listed kits assume five-foot bracket spacing; it advises at least one bracket every four feet for plywood. The rink footprint must fit within the liner dimensions. View Iron Sleek’s kit details. |
| Rink Wizard | The manufacturer describes a no-liner kit, two standard sizes, and maintenance accessories. | Confirm which size suits the yard and what accessories are included in the specific offer. This is a current design alternative, not evidence that the product appeared in the historical review. View the manufacturer’s product description; check the storefront. |
| EZ Rink | GC Tyler’s review names EZ Rink as its favored option. | The available review information does not establish a complete current model specification or price. Treat the preference as the author’s dated view, not a current ranking. Read the review. |
How to choose between a kit and a DIY build
Check the yard and footprint first
Measure the usable area and account for slope, the planned wall or board layout, and the space needed around the rink. With a liner system, compare the rink footprint with the liner dimensions: Iron Sleek says the rink must fit within its liner. YardRink’s guide also treats site selection and reinforcement as parts of the build, not details a kit automatically solves.
Read the included-parts list literally
Do not assume “kit” means a complete set of boards, liner, and hardware. The cited NiceRink listing expressly excludes sideboards. Iron Sleek’s manufacturer page, by contrast, lists brackets, screws, corner brackets, a liner, and instructions, but its stated contents should still be checked against the particular package you plan to buy.

Match brackets to the board material
Bracket spacing is not interchangeable across all board materials. Iron Sleek says its listed kit spacing assumes five feet between brackets and recommends at least one bracket every four feet for plywood. Use the manufacturer’s directions for the system and material you select rather than treating a kit’s default spacing as universal.
Decide whether a liner suits your plan
NiceRink and Iron Sleek describe liner-and-bracket approaches; Rink Wizard describes a no-liner system. A liner can make a traditional build easier, according to the dated review, but the cited product descriptions establish different designs rather than a tested winner. Compare each system’s stated requirements with the ground, walls, and footprint you can provide.

What the 2020 review can—and cannot—tell you
The Goalie Coaches page is marked updated August 23, 2021 and discusses the 2020 buying context, including lumber prices. The available page evidence does not establish that date as the original publication date or preserve a complete original 2020 version. It also does not document independent comparative testing or establish a complete current shortlist. Use its EZ Rink preference as historical context, not as proof of which kit is best today. Current product details should come from the relevant seller or manufacturer listing.
