The SmartSource and Enfinity ranges overlap around ½ to 5 or 6 tons, but the overlap does not mean the units are interchangeable. Cabinet dimensions, airflow arrangement, sound requirements, controls, connections, electrical data, and certified capacity can differ by model. Select from the actual model table, not from the broad family range.
Horizontal versus vertical: the physical decision
Horizontal ceiling-mounted units
A horizontal unit is generally installed above a ceiling or in another overhead service zone. This arrangement can preserve floor area and serve a nearby zone through short duct runs. It also creates practical obligations: the ceiling system must support the equipment, access panels must remain removable, condensate must be routed correctly, and technicians need a safe path to filters, controls, electrical components, water connections, and the refrigeration circuit.
Enfinity’s documented horizontal range is intended for individually zoned comfort applications. Confirm whether the proposed location has enough height and width for the selected cabinet, duct transitions, piping, insulation, and valve package. A nominal tonnage match is not enough if the unit cannot be removed or serviced through the available opening.

Vertical floor-mounted units
A vertical unit stands on the floor or on a designed support and uses a vertical cabinet arrangement. It may fit a mechanical closet, utility room, or perimeter zone where overhead space is limited. The floor must carry the operating weight, and the room must provide the manufacturer’s required air-side and service clearances. Check the discharge direction and return-air path before framing the closet or ordering ductwork.
Vertical and horizontal versions can have different dimensions, connection locations, electrical requirements, and access-panel layouts even when their nominal capacities look similar. Do not substitute one orientation for the other without a revised selection and updated drawings.

How to choose the correct family and model
- Define the application. Record whether the unit will use a conventional water loop or a geothermal loop, whether it serves one zone or several, and whether it is new construction or a replacement. SmartSource material covers standard and geothermal applications; the final selection still depends on loop temperatures and the model’s published operating envelope.
- Calculate the design load. Establish heating and cooling loads for the actual zone, including ventilation, envelope, occupancy, internal gains, and design outdoor conditions. Do not select from the family’s minimum or maximum tonnage simply because the number appears to fit the floor area.
- Choose the mounting arrangement. Decide between horizontal ceiling-mounted and vertical floor-mounted installation after checking structural support, ceiling or closet dimensions, duct routing, condensate drainage, piping, electrical access, and service clearance.
- Check performance at project conditions. Use the model’s certified tables for entering-water temperature, entering-air condition, airflow, fan setting, and entering-water flow. The SmartSource large-capacity engineering literature includes AHRI performance sections; use those tables rather than a generic nominal-ton figure.
- Specify controls and communications. Identify the required thermostat or room sensor, supervisory network, alarm handling, occupancy functions, and any BACnet integration. Large-capacity SmartSource literature lists BACnet-capable MicroTech 2300 controls, but availability and points should be confirmed for the selected model and revision.
- Add only required factory options. Determine whether the project needs hot-gas reheat, a two-way motorized valve, or another listed option. Verify that the option is available for the exact model and that it changes electrical, piping, control, or clearance requirements.
- Freeze the submittal and installation documents. Put the model number, orientation, capacity, voltage, controls, options, connections, and current refrigerant or model revision on the submittal. Use the matching IOM manual for field dimensions, clearances, wiring, water connections, and commissioning.
Understanding the capacity ranges
SmartSource small capacity: ½ to 5 tons
The small-capacity SmartSource family is published from ½ through 5 tons and is described for standard or geothermal applications. The range is broad enough to cover many individual zones, but the correct point within it depends on the calculated load and the entering-water and entering-air conditions. A 3-ton label, for example, does not guarantee 3 tons under every loop temperature, airflow, or entering-air condition.
Confirm the selected model’s heating and cooling output, water flow, pressure drop, fan performance, sound data, electrical characteristics, and operating limits. Those values should come from the current model data rather than from a family headline.
SmartSource large capacity: 6 to 25 tons
The large-capacity SmartSource range is published from 6 through 25 tons. Its engineering literature is organized into AHRI performance, controls, accessories, electrical data, physical data, and dimensional drawings. That structure is useful for a design team because it allows the mechanical, controls, electrical, and installation checks to be made against the same model selection.
At these capacities, water-loop flow, pump selection, electrical service, rigging, access, and noise control can materially affect the installation. Use the physical and dimensional tables for the exact cabinet and confirm that the selected control and valve options fit the project sequence.
Enfinity horizontal: ½ to 6 tons
Daikin Applied describes Enfinity horizontal ceiling-mounted equipment from ½ to 6 tons for individually zoned comfort applications. This range may suit a ceiling-plenum design, but the selected model still has to satisfy the zone load, duct static pressure, ceiling access, condensate arrangement, and service plan.

Controls, communications, and options
Controls are part of the equipment selection, not an afterthought. The large-capacity SmartSource material lists MicroTech 2300 controls with BACnet capability. Before specifying network integration, confirm the exact controller, available points, addressing method, alarm behavior, and required gateway or supervisory hardware for the model being quoted.

Hot-gas reheat may be relevant where sensible cooling and humidity control must be managed together; a two-way motorized valve can affect loop control, wiring, and commissioning. These are listed options, not universal features. The quote and submittal should identify whether each option is factory installed, field supplied, or unavailable on the selected model.
Coordinate controls with the building sequence: occupied and unoccupied operation, heating and cooling changeover, fan operation, freeze protection, condensate alarms, valve operation, and network alarm reporting. Commission each point at the unit and at the supervisory system instead of assuming a BACnet-capable controller is automatically integrated.
Room-sensor compatibility: a model-specific check
Daikin Applied’s digital adjustable display sensor manual identifies sensor 910152147 for Enfinity horizontal models W.CCH and W.CCW. The display is described as showing room temperature, alarm, override, and occupancy information.
That documentation does not establish compatibility with every horizontal or vertical water-source heat pump. Before purchasing a sensor, match the unit model and controller to the applicable manual and wiring information. If the project uses a different Enfinity model, a SmartSource unit, or a different control package, obtain confirmation from the current submittal or controls documentation first.

Installation constraints that should be resolved before release
Service and replacement access
Draw the access route, not just the final equipment footprint. For a ceiling-mounted unit, show the removable ceiling section, lifting or hoisting path, filter access, electrical access, and drain-pan service area. For a vertical unit, show door swings, closet clearances, front-panel removal, and the path for future replacement.
Water connections and loop design
Confirm entering and leaving water connections, required flow, pressure drop, strainer and valve arrangements, hose or flexible-connection requirements, and insulation at the selected model. A geothermal loop may have different water temperatures and antifreeze conditions from a conventional building loop; verify that the unit and accessories are approved for the actual fluid and operating range.
Condensate and humidity control
Provide a properly trapped and sloped condensate drain where required by the model manual, with access for cleaning and a method of detecting overflow. If reheat is selected, coordinate the control sequence and condensate expectations with the humidity-control design.
Electrical and airflow coordination
Use the exact electrical table for voltage, phase, minimum circuit ampacity, maximum overcurrent protection, disconnect requirements, and factory options. Coordinate duct size, static pressure, grille or diffuser selection, return-air path, and balancing access with the model’s fan data. Do not infer these values from tonnage alone.

Daikin Applied’s IOM index provides installation and operation manuals for the relevant Enfinity and other equipment groupings, including Enfinity large-capacity horizontal, large-capacity vertical, and small horizontal equipment. Open the manual that matches the ordered family and model; similarly named manuals may cover different cabinets.

For engineering review, the SmartSource large-capacity literature contains separate sections for performance, controls, accessories, electrical information, physical data, and dimensional drawings. Keep the performance table and dimensional drawing with the submittal so the mechanical and controls reviewers are working from the same revision.
At release, verify the current refrigerant designation, model revision, factory options, electrical data, and published clearances. Product pages describe families, while the current submittal establishes what can actually be ordered and installed.
Common selection mistakes and how to correct them
- Assuming “Axiom” is the Daikin family name. Correct the schedule to the verified SmartSource or Enfinity family and identify the exact model.
- Choosing by tonnage only. Recalculate the load and check certified performance at the project’s water, air, and airflow conditions.
- Swapping horizontal and vertical units late. Recheck dimensions, connections, ductwork, condensate, support, access, and controls before approving a substitution.
- Ordering a room sensor without checking compatibility. Sensor 910152147 is documented for Enfinity horizontal W.CCH and W.CCW models; confirm any other combination in the applicable manual.
- Leaving service access to the installer. Show access and removal paths on the plans and compare them with the IOM clearances.
- Assuming BACnet capability equals a complete integration. Confirm the controller, points list, network architecture, alarm mapping, and commissioning responsibility.
- Using an old submittal. Reconfirm model revision, refrigerant, electrical data, options, and dimensions before procurement.

Choose horizontal or vertical based on the real space and service route, not on a catalog label.
