10 Commercial-Building Safety Products That Cut Costs—What the 2018 Winners Claimed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The list titled 10 Money-Saving Life Safety & Security Products is a 2018 commercial-building roundup, not a current household-security buying guide. Its ten entries combine cloud software, fire-door hardware, electronic credentials, cameras, surveillance infrastructure, a mobile observation tower and investigation software. The potential savings come from avoiding dedicated servers or IT labor, reducing wiring and energy use, covering more area with fewer cameras, or shortening investigation work.

Use the products below as a historical map of cost-saving approaches. BUILDINGS Editors presented the performance and savings figures as product claims in 2018; the article supplied no independent test method. Southco still documents an EA-BT controller family, while current support, specifications, prices and availability for the other nine entries are not established here. A facilities team should verify every part number, integration and total cost before specifying equipment.

What the 2018 roundup covers

The original framing was protecting people and building assets while reducing operating expense. That means the products are not interchangeable. A fire-door release system solves a life-safety control problem; a Bluetooth controller solves credential and lock wiring; a panoramic camera changes coverage; investigation software addresses fraud workload. Comparing them as if they were competing versions of one device would produce a misleading purchase decision.

The date matters. Product generations, cybersecurity requirements, operating systems, camera codecs, fire-code interpretations and vendor support can change in eight years. Treat the figures below as the claims reported by that 2018 article, not as present-day test results.

The ten products and their proposed savings

1. ACT365: cloud-managed access and video

ACT365 combines access control and video management in a cloud service managed from an internet-connected device. BUILDINGS Editors said the service model could spare a small business the expense of dedicated IT staff and locally maintained application software. The economic trade-off is shifting effort from on-site servers and upgrades to recurring service, network connectivity and vendor administration.

For a real project, confirm which doors, readers, cameras and alarm events the current service supports, how data is retained, what happens during an internet outage and whether the building’s privacy and retention policies permit cloud storage. The 2018 description does not establish current pricing, service levels or compatibility.

2. AlarmGard: fire-door closing tied to the building alarm

AlarmGard is described as a fire-door closing system available in standard motor-operator or tube-motor configurations. It connects directly to a building alarm, includes an integrated release device and allows multiple doors to be tested and reset at once. Those functions can reduce technician time during recurring tests and make a multi-door event easier to manage.

  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips

Fire-door work is life-safety work, not a convenience upgrade. The authority having jurisdiction, the fire-alarm designer and the door assembly’s listing must govern the specification. Confirm release behavior, supervision, testing intervals, compatible operators and the documentation required after an alarm or power failure.

3. Arteco Face Recognition: analytics for identification workflows

The roundup described face-recognition software using 2D-to-3D pose correction and a neural network. It reported 25 million comparisons per second, a 128-byte template and recognition from a facial image height as low as 30 pixels. Those numbers belong to BUILDINGS Editors’ 2018 product description; no test conditions or independent validation were supplied.

Analytics can reduce the time an operator spends searching video, but accuracy depends on camera angle, illumination, image quality, enrollment, demographic performance and the threshold chosen for an alert. Before deployment, establish lawful use, notice and retention rules, access to templates, human review of matches and a process for correcting false positives. Do not treat a reported comparison rate as proof that a system will identify a person reliably in your building.

4. EA-BT Bluetooth Controller: credentials for electronic latches

The EA-BT is a Bluetooth access controller that lets compatible Bluetooth-enabled devices act as credentials for electronic locks. BUILDINGS Editors emphasized reduced wiring, installation and IT-support costs. Southco’s current product documentation describes a single-output controller for electronically actuated latches and lists both externally powered and battery-powered variants.

This is a commercial access-control component, not a universal retrofit lock. Match the controller’s output, power arrangement, latch voltage, enclosure and credential workflow to the existing door hardware. Decide how credentials are issued, revoked and recovered when a phone is lost, and test behavior during low battery, power loss and network interruption. Verify the exact current part number and distributor availability rather than relying on the 2018 roundup.

5. EcoFlex Exit Trim: electrified egress hardware

EcoFlex Exit Trim is described as electrified exit trim for standalone use, a wall-reader installation or integration with an access-control lock. The roundup reported up to 95% lower energy consumption than traditional exit trims and attributed the difference to a motor replacing a solenoid.

“Up to” is a maximum claim, not a guaranteed saving for every door. Actual energy use depends on duty cycle, voltage, access policy and the selected trim. Confirm that the exit device remains code-compliant, that egress is free under all failure modes and that the trim is listed for the door and frame. Calculate energy, installation, battery and maintenance costs together; a lower nominal draw does not by itself establish lower total ownership cost.

6. Evolution 180 Indoor Camera: broad coverage from one viewpoint

The Evolution 180 Indoor Camera is a 180-degree panoramic camera. BUILDINGS Editors identified a 12MP sensor and a 6MP dewarped panoramic image, and said one unit could replace two to three fixed cameras. The proposed saving is fewer devices, runs, licenses and maintenance points, with fewer blind spots and no moving parts.

Replacement is a design claim, not an automatic result. A panoramic view can change pixel density at the edges, mounting height and the ability to identify faces or read plates at distance. Produce a coverage plan showing the required identification zones, lighting, dewarping view, storage bitrate and retention period. Compare the installed cost of one panoramic camera with the actual number of fixed cameras it would replace in that floor plan.

7. 3xLOGIC integrated access and video management

The roundup presents this commercial-grade software for small and medium businesses. Its described functions include mobile alerts, remote viewing, live and recorded video, and reporting. BUILDINGS Editors characterized the integration as a way to avoid separate labor, software and server costs.

Integration can reduce swivel-chair work only when events, permissions and audit trails are genuinely unified. Confirm supported readers, cameras, operating systems, mobile applications, report exports, user roles and retention controls. Price implementation, licensing, updates, training, network capacity and support; the 2018 article does not provide a current fee schedule or a measured comparison against separate systems.

8. Pivot3 Critical Video Surveillance Infrastructure: consolidated video platform

Pivot3 is described as a combined storage, compute, networking and virtualization platform for surveillance. For the version discussed, BUILDINGS Editors reported up to a 66% improvement in video-ingest rates, more than 500 cameras per node and more than 10,000 cameras per rack. These are historical product claims, not current specifications established here.

Infrastructure savings depend on the camera count, resolution, frame rate, retention, redundancy and expansion plan. Request a sizing exercise that states ingest throughput, usable storage after protection, failure recovery, network uplinks, virtualization support and licensing. Compare the five-year cost of the integrated platform with separately purchased servers, storage, switches, software and support, using your own workload rather than the maximum figures.

9. SCOT: portable observation and visitor functions

SCOT is a portable remote observation tower for security, visitor management, access control and two-way communication. The 2018 description includes human detection, license-plate recognition, a call button and a visible LED screen. It reported an operating cost of about $3 per hour.

That hourly amount is the roundup’s 2018 claim and should not be treated as a current rental or ownership quote. Determine whether the tower is staffed, connected to an alarm center, moved between sites, weather-rated for the location and integrated with gates or credentials. Evaluate response procedures: a camera or call button can detect and communicate, but it does not replace a documented intervention plan.

10. Verint Evidence Center: investigation workflow

Verint Evidence Center is described for banks and credit unions. BUILDINGS Editors reported up to 85% less fraud-investigation time and said institutions could lower the investigation threshold by up to 50%. No test method or independent validation accompanies those figures.

The possible saving is analyst time: collecting, organizing and reviewing evidence can become faster, allowing an institution to examine smaller or earlier cases. Validate the claim with a controlled pilot using your own case types, evidence sources, chain-of-custody rules and review times. Include licensing, integration, training, retention and legal-discovery requirements in the business case.

How to evaluate one of these products for a current project

  1. Define the problem. Write the measurable outcome first: faster fire-door testing, fewer cable runs, wider camera coverage, lower energy use, reduced investigation time or a specific access-control capability.
  2. Map the existing system. Record door and frame types, fire-alarm interfaces, reader protocols, latch voltage, camera resolutions, network capacity, storage retention, server locations and user directories. Compatibility is a project fact, not a marketing assumption.
  3. Separate claims from requirements. Put every advertised percentage, camera count, throughput or hourly cost in a column labeled “vendor or 2018 roundup claim.” Put code, security, uptime, retention and response obligations in a separate requirements column.
  4. Request current documentation. Obtain the present datasheet, firmware and software support matrix, end-of-life policy, cybersecurity advisories, installation instructions, warranty and service terms. The 2018 roundup does not establish these details for nine of the entries.
  5. Calculate total cost of ownership. Include equipment, design, cabling, licenses, cloud fees, power, batteries, network upgrades, storage, monitoring, inspections, training, replacement parts and decommissioning. Compare the same period and service level for every option.
  6. Run a representative pilot. Test the difficult doors, worst lighting, busiest network period and real investigation cases. Measure the outcome you defined instead of accepting a maximum specification as a field result.
  7. Document failure behavior. Record what happens during power loss, network loss, cloud outage, low battery, alarm activation, server failure and a false analytic alert. Obtain sign-off from facilities, security, IT and the authority having jurisdiction where applicable.

Common pitfalls that erase the apparent savings

  • Comparing unlike categories: a cloud access platform, a panoramic camera and fraud software solve different problems and have different cost centers.
  • Using a maximum as a forecast: “up to” percentages and camera counts describe an upper claim, not a guaranteed project result.
  • Ignoring recurring costs: subscriptions, cloud storage, software support, cellular data, batteries and analytics licenses can exceed the initial hardware saving.
  • Underestimating integration: legacy readers, door operators, alarm panels and video recorders may require gateways, rewiring or custom programming.
  • Skipping life-safety review: egress hardware and fire-door controls must remain listed, supervised and testable under the adopted code and the authority’s interpretation.
  • Failing to plan privacy and security: face templates, license-plate data, mobile credentials and investigation evidence need access control, retention limits and documented handling.
  • Assuming availability: only the EA-BT product family’s current documentation is established in the reviewed material. Confirm current support and supply for every other item before naming it in a specification.

Project checklist

  • Identify the building area, risk, occupants, assets and measurable savings target.
  • Verify code, listing, alarm and egress requirements with the responsible professionals.
  • Obtain current compatibility and lifecycle documents for the exact model or software release.
  • Price installation, commissioning, training, support, consumables and recurring services.
  • Test normal operation and every relevant failure mode before acceptance.
  • Set owners for credential administration, camera review, alarm response, evidence retention and periodic testing.
  • Recalculate the business case when camera counts, retention, network design or staffing assumptions change.

Bottom line

The ten 2018 winners are useful as examples of where a commercial building might save money: move selected management to the cloud, automate multi-door testing, reduce lock wiring, lower exit-trim energy use, cover more space with panoramic video, consolidate surveillance infrastructure, add remote observation or accelerate investigations. They are not a current, one-size-fits-all product list. Treat every number as a dated claim, verify present documentation and availability, and select only after a compatibility review, lifecycle cost calculation and representative pilot.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
