An AWS disruption on October 20, 2025 caused intermittent problems for some Eight Sleep Pod owners. Eight Sleep acknowledged that certain devices and controls became unreachable, while sleep reports and morning recaps were delayed. Separately, users reported overheating, unexpected alarms, flashing lights, and beds stuck in inclined positions.
The evidence does not show that AWS remotely commanded every Eight Sleep bed into unsafe settings. It does show a significant cloud-dependency failure: when Eight Sleep’s online services were disrupted, some owners lost reliable access to controls for a device that manages temperature and, in some cases, bed position.

The short version
- The incident occurred during the AWS outage on Monday, October 20, 2025—not during a current Eight Sleep outage.
- Eight Sleep reported that some devices and control features were unreachable, with degraded data processing and delayed reports.
- Users and secondary reports described more serious symptoms, including excessive heat or cooling, stuck elevation, flashing lights, and alarms.
- Those physical symptoms are user reports, not a published device-by-device failure count.
- Eight Sleep later reported an offline Backup Mode intended to provide local app-to-Pod control over Bluetooth, although supported models and functions should be confirmed directly before relying on it.
The central buyer question is therefore not simply whether an Eight Sleep Pod can malfunction. It is whether basic temperature and position controls remain available when the home network or Eight Sleep’s cloud services fail.
What is an Eight Sleep Pod?
The Pod is primarily a temperature-control and sleep-tracking system added to an existing mattress. It is not necessarily a complete mattress replacement. A connected Hub works with a temperature-controlled Cover, while an optional adjustable Base adds elevation and related features.

Eight Sleep currently advertises independent heating and cooling on each side, a temperature range of approximately 55°F to 110°F, sleep and health tracking, vibration and thermal alarms, and optional elevation and snoring-mitigation features. Product details are available on the Eight Sleep Pod Cover page.
That combination makes the system more capable than a conventional mattress, but also introduces more points of dependence: power, the Hub, home Wi-Fi, a phone, Eight Sleep’s backend services, and—in some cases—an active subscription.
What happened on October 20, 2025?
AWS experienced a broad disruption, particularly involving infrastructure in us-east-1, affecting many unrelated online services. Eight Sleep’s incident timeline, reproduced by IsDown, described two main periods:

| Approximate UTC period | Eight Sleep-reported impact |
|---|---|
| 07:00–09:00 | Some devices and control features were unreachable. |
| 09:00–11:00 | Selected features remained degraded. |
| After service recovery | Sleep reports, health reports, and SMS morning recaps could be delayed or incomplete while data processing caught up. |
These times describe Eight Sleep’s reported service impact, not necessarily the complete duration of the AWS incident. They also do not establish that every Pod or every customer was affected.
What did owners report?
It is important to separate company-confirmed service effects from anecdotal physical symptoms.
Confirmed or company-attributed effects
- Some Pods and control functions could not be reached.
- Some app-based services were degraded.
- Sleep and health data processing was delayed.
- Morning SMS recaps could arrive late or contain incomplete information.
User-reported physical symptoms
Reports collected by the Washington Post, PCWorld, Cybernews, and UPI included:

- No More Night Sweats: This original Chilipad bed cooling system is designed to make your existing mattress cooler. Its mattress topper fits over your existing mattress and plugs into a Cube that sits under or beside your bed. The Cube circulates chilled or heated water through the topper while you sleep. Use the remote control to change your bed temperature. Fits over any mattress. Half sizes cover half of the bed. Includes 1 Chilipad and 1 Cube control unit.
- Water-Based System: Use water to regulate the surface temperature of your existing mattress by actively circulating water through silicone micro-tubes in the pad, providing a more comfortable sleeping environment!
- Bedroom Setup: The pad connector can be placed at either end of your mattress to accommodate multiple bed frame styles, power source locations, and control unit access. Elastic straps allow the mattress pad to fit any mattress height, and the ME or half size pads work on split adjustable beds. The Cube's sleek design easily fits under bed frames over 8 inches in height.
- Wide Temperature Range: Temperature ranges from 60-115°F (15.5-46°C) so you can set it to your ideal bed temperature. Not meant to replace conventional A/C. Peak operating performance can be affected by ambient temperature and humidity.
- Easy to Install & Clean: Installs in minutes and Chilipad mattress topper is 100% machine washable and dryable.
- Temperature controls that stopped responding.
- Beds becoming excessively warm or failing to cool.
- Adjustable beds remaining in an elevated or inclined position.
- Flashing lights.
- Unexpected or nonstop alarms.
- Owners being unable to control the system through the app.
These accounts show the range of reported experiences, but they do not reveal how many Pods were affected, whether a particular generation was more vulnerable, or exactly how AWS disruption produced each physical symptom.
Did AWS directly control the beds?
There is no basis for saying that AWS directly sent incorrect commands to every Eight Sleep Pod. A more defensible explanation is that the outage interfered with parts of Eight Sleep’s control architecture.
- An owner issues a command through the Eight Sleep app.
- Eight Sleep’s online services may handle authentication, routing, automation, or status information.
- The Hub and Pod hardware execute or maintain the requested behavior.
- If the cloud service or a dependent data pipeline fails, app commands may not reach the device, status may not update, and schedules or reports may be delayed.
Eight Sleep has not publicly documented every control path in enough detail to conclude that every temperature adjustment is processed in AWS or that the Hub has no local safeguards. The incident confirms cloud-service dependency, not the precise software route for every function.
Was this a safety failure?
The available evidence supports describing the event as a serious reliability and comfort problem with potential safety implications—not as proof of widespread injury or a product-wide safety defect.
- Reliability problem: owners could not access expected controls.
- Comfort problem: some users reported excessive heat, inadequate cooling, or an unwanted inclined position.
- Potential safety concern: a user may be unable to quickly return a heat-producing or mechanically adjustable system to a preferred state.
- Not established: a pattern of burns, fire, electrocution, injuries, or a recall.
If a connected bed becomes too hot, physically uncomfortable, or stuck in a position that creates concern, the prudent response is to leave it rather than remain in an unsafe environment. Owners should not open the Hub, bypass safeguards, or modify the electrical or heating-and-cooling system.

Later coverage from PCWorld reported the introduction of an offline Backup Mode. The reported design uses Bluetooth for local communication between the Eight Sleep app and the Pod during a Wi-Fi or internet failure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Backup Mode does—and what remains unclear
Backup Mode is best understood as an emergency local-control path, not automatically as a complete replacement for Eight Sleep’s cloud services. Before depending on it, owners and buyers should confirm the current information in the Eight Sleep app and support documentation, including:
- Which Pod generations support Backup Mode.
- Whether it controls temperature, elevation, alarms, and other functions.
- Whether the phone must be paired in advance.
- Whether it works when the Hub has power but no internet connection.
- Whether it works during an AWS outage if the local Bluetooth path remains available.
- Whether an emergency return-to-flat action is supported.
- Whether iPhone and Android behavior is identical.
Do not assume that every Pod generation or every feature is covered. Bluetooth cannot solve a Hub that has lost power, and an app-based fallback may be unavailable if the phone battery is dead or the Pod was never configured correctly.
What owners should do if the Pod loses connectivity
This is general precautionary guidance, not a substitute for Eight Sleep’s current emergency procedure.
- Identify the failure. Test the app, your phone connection, and home Wi-Fi. Check Eight Sleep’s service-status information to distinguish a local network problem from a wider incident.
- Do not repeatedly unplug equipment while the bed is moving. Allow mechanical movement to stop where possible.
- Use Backup Mode if it is available for the owner’s Pod and already configured.
- Use documented physical controls or an official emergency-return function if the product provides one.
- Leave the bed if its temperature or position becomes unsafe or intolerable.
- Do not bypass or electrically modify the system.
- Contact support with the Pod model, app version, time of failure, symptoms, and error messages.
What buyers should ask before purchasing
- Can basic temperature control work without internet access?
- Is local Bluetooth or local-network control available?
- Does the system fail to a neutral temperature and flat position?
- Are schedules and alarms stored locally or in the cloud?
- Which functions stop when an Autopilot subscription ends?
- Does the product remain useful if the company’s backend is temporarily unavailable?
- How are replacement parts, app support, and cloud services maintained over time?
- What happens if the phone is unavailable, the Hub loses power, or the home network fails?
Eight Sleep’s U.S. pages observed on August 18, 2026 listed Pod 5 at $2,999, with an example Queen checkout total of about $3,298 including an Autopilot plan. The pages also showed an optional $1,999 Base and plans listed at $17, $25, or $33 per month depending on tier. Prices, plan terms, warranties, and availability can change; check the current pricing and plan information before buying.
The advertised product ecosystem included a 30-night trial and, depending on the plan, a five-year warranty. Subscription requirements and included physical functions should be checked for the specific Pod, Cover, Base, region, and plan.
Bottom line
The October 20, 2025 AWS outage did not prove that every Eight Sleep bed is unsafe, nor that AWS directly forced all Pods into extreme settings. It did expose a meaningful design trade-off: a premium connected sleep system can lose more than its reports when remote services fail. The later Backup Mode response is a constructive step, but buyers should verify its supported hardware and actual controls. If dependable offline operation is a priority, compare Eight Sleep with simpler, less cloud-dependent options before purchasing.
