The available examples do not establish an off-the-shelf consumer automatic nut sorter; they show a student prototype and industrial systems built for application-specific work.
What an automatic nut sorter does
Sorting and inspection are different tasks. A sorter separates parts by characteristics such as type or size. An optical inspection machine checks parts against visual or dimensional criteria, potentially identifying defects as part of a production process. A storage organizer performs neither job: it holds parts after they have been sorted.
For a construction workshop or maintenance area, start by identifying the bottleneck. Mixed nuts, bolts, and washers need separation; production parts that may be defective need inspection; sorted fasteners scattered across a bench need labeled storage.
How a small-scale sorter can separate fasteners
The NBN Sorter, a student project associated with Kasetsart University Sriracha Campus’s Industrial Engineering Program, demonstrates one prototype approach. Its repository describes a machine designed to separate mixed bolts, nuts, and washers by type and size, with M3, M4, and M5 examples. Its described stages include gravity rails with adjustable gaps, a rotating plate for nuts, magnetic handling for bolts, collection bins, and an ESP32/TFT dashboard. In principle, rails and gaps let parts pass or fall through according to their dimensions, while a rotating plate or magnetic handling directs other parts toward different collection points. This approach depends on parts being fed in a way the mechanism can handle. Jams, clumping, and unreliable transfers can undermine the result even when an individual sorting station performs well.
What the prototype’s reported results show
The repository reports separate station results and an overall end-to-end result. These figures come from the project’s own tests and should not be treated as market benchmarks or as measurements made on one shared denominator.

The contrast between strong and weak stages is a practical warning: a high result at the nut-sorting station does not guarantee accurate performance from mixed input to final bins. The project reports magnetic clumping and transfer reliability problems, illustrating why a prototype should be assessed end to end for the actual fasteners and workflow it will handle.
When industrial optical sorting makes sense
Industrial optical systems are aimed at production inspection and sorting, not simply tidying a small workshop bench. Vendors describe applications for nuts, washers, bolts, screws, and related components. Their published speeds and precision statements are application-dependent vendor claims, not independent comparative test results.

Published vendor claims and their limits

These figures are not directly comparable guarantees: they come from different vendors and descriptions, and real throughput or inspection capability depends on the part and application. Before evaluating an industrial system, ask for an assessment using the actual part geometry and the defect criteria that matter to your process.
What to compare before specifying a system
- Part fit: supported geometries and dimensions, including the specific nuts, washers, bolts, or screws in your process.
- Task: whether the need is classification by type or size, defect inspection, or both.
- Production requirements: demonstrated throughput for the specific part, not only a general maximum.
- Changeovers: adjustment or customization required when part types or dimensions change.
- Deployment: integration needs, footprint, and vendor support.
Keep sorted nuts organized at the workstation
If fasteners are already sorted, a compartmented organizer addresses the remaining problem: access and storage. Festool’s SYS 3-SORT/12 has 12 small drawers, dividers, and label holders; the manufacturer documents it for storing fasteners. It is an organizer, not an automatic sorting machine. Choose a storage system by the way your crew works: check drawer size against the fasteners you keep on hand, whether dividers can be arranged for different stock, how labels will identify sizes, and whether the unit needs to move between work areas. Choose by the bottleneck, not the label
- Mixed small batches: a DIY or prototype sorter may be worth exploring if you can validate its adjustment range, jamming behavior, and end-to-end accuracy on your own fasteners.
- Production inspection: investigate industrial optical systems when you need repeatable inspection or sorting at production scale, and verify claims against your parts and criteria.
- Bench clutter: use labeled drawers or compartments when the fasteners are already sorted and the main need is keeping them visible and accessible.
