Australian construction work done fell 2.1% in the June quarter of 2026, to $82.516 billion, on the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ seasonally adjusted chain-volume measure. The decline was concentrated in engineering: building work increased. The ABS trend estimate also rose, so the quarterly drop does not by itself show that construction is in a sustained downturn.
Did construction work done fall in Australia?
Yes, on the seasonally adjusted measure for the June quarter. The ABS preliminary estimate put total construction work done at $82,515.9 million, down 2.1% from the March quarter but 2.7% higher than a year earlier. These are chain-volume values referenced to 2023–24, not current-price dollar totals. The ABS describes the preliminary release as an early indication of activity. ABS Construction Work Done, June quarter 2026
The trend estimate told a different short-term story: $81,966.0 million, up 0.7% on the quarter and 4.5% over the year. Seasonally adjusted and trend figures are different presentations of the data. The quarterly fall is real within the seasonally adjusted series, but it should not be presented as proof that the underlying trend was falling. ABS Construction Work Done, June quarter 2026
Which part of construction fell?
Engineering construction drove the decline; building work rose. In the preliminary total release, building increased 1.3% quarter to quarter while preliminary engineering fell 6.0%. The engineering estimate was subsequently revised in the dedicated engineering release, so the updated engineering figure is the one to use when describing that component.

| Measure | June quarter 2026 value | Quarterly change | Annual change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total construction work done, seasonally adjusted | $82,515.9 million | −2.1% | +2.7% |
| Building work done, preliminary total release | $45,843.7 million | +1.3% | +10.0% |
| Residential building work done | $27,867.1 million | +1.7% | +9.1% |
| Non-residential building work done | $17,976.6 million | +0.5% | +11.5% |
| Engineering work done, revised estimate | $37,200.0 million | −4.7% | −3.7% |
All values in the table are Australian Bureau of Statistics seasonally adjusted chain-volume estimates for Australia, with a 2023–24 reference year. The total and building figures come from the preliminary Construction Work Done release; engineering was updated in the later Engineering Construction Activity release. Because the engineering series was revised after the preliminary release, the figures should not be mechanically combined as if they were one synchronized set of estimates. Private and public engineering work
The revised engineering release reported private-sector work of $21,400.5 million, down 7.4% for the quarter, and public-sector work of $15,799.5 million, down 0.8%. The larger private-sector fall indicates where the quarterly movement was more pronounced; the figures alone do not explain why it happened. ABS Engineering Construction Activity, June quarter 2026

Why did Australian construction output fall?
The ABS figures establish that engineering work declined while building work increased. They do not identify the cause of the engineering fall. The releases do not, on their own, establish project delays, cost pressures, weak demand or investment cuts as explanations, so attributing the result to any of those would go beyond the evidence.
The engineering release also reported a trend estimate that rose 0.5% even as its seasonally adjusted estimate fell 4.7%. That contrast reinforces the need to distinguish a quarterly movement from a sustained direction. ABS Engineering Construction Activity, June quarter 2026

Is Australian building activity also falling?
No, not on the June-quarter measures reported in the later ABS Building Activity release. It put building work at $45.8 billion, up 1.1% seasonally adjusted. That release supersedes the preliminary building estimate for its subject. ABS Building Activity, June quarter 2026
Dwelling commencements also increased on the seasonally adjusted measure: 52,201 homes, up 7.0% from the March quarter and 14.4% from a year earlier. The trend estimate was 51,421 commencements, down 0.2% quarter to quarter. Work done measures the value of construction activity, while commencements count dwellings beginning construction; neither figure alone establishes whether housing supply is adequate. How preliminary are the June-quarter figures?
The ABS preliminary Construction Work Done release had responses from approximately 80% of surveyed construction entities during the quarter and says its estimates are subject to revision. The later Building Activity release represented approximately 85% of the value of work done and may also be revised as further survey responses are processed. ABS Construction Work Done, June quarter 2026; ABS Building Activity, June quarter 2026
Construction work done is a value-of-work measure split between building and engineering. The preliminary publication covers approved building work above $10,000 and engineering construction work undertaken in Australia. Building Activity includes approved building jobs over $10,000, including new buildings, additions and alterations, non-structural renovation and refurbishment, and installation of integral building fixtures. The engineering survey excludes buildings such as houses and offices and collects information from primary project contractors, not subcontractors.
