Generally, no. A high-efficiency (HE) top-load washer should use detergent labeled “HE” or “High Efficiency.” HE machines use less water, so they need a low-sudsing formula. Regular detergent can create excess suds, lengthen cycles, reduce rinsing performance and, in some circumstances, contribute to overflow or other problems. The top-loading shape does not determine detergent type; the washer’s HE designation and owner’s manual do.
The short answer: use HE detergent
High-efficiency top-load washers are compatible with detergent marked with the HE symbol (a lowercase “h” and “e” inside a circle) or wording such as “HE” and “High Efficiency.” They are not designed around the larger amount of water traditionally used by conventional washers. Their wash and rinse cycles use carefully controlled, lower water levels, and the detergent must clean effectively without generating a large volume of foam.

Regular detergent is not physically blocked by the washer. The machine may start and complete a cycle, but compatibility in the practical sense is poor. Manufacturer guidance from Whirlpool, Maytag and GE Appliances connects non-HE detergent in an HE washer with excess suds, longer cycles, impaired cleaning or rinsing and possible overflow. A Whirlpool/Maytag top-loading washer guide states: “Using regular detergent will likely result in longer cycle times and reduced rinsing performance.” That warning describes likely operating effects, not a guarantee that one accidental load will damage a machine.

For a definitive answer, check the detergent compartment, lid label or owner’s manual for your exact model. Then check the detergent package. Both instructions matter: the washer determines what type of detergent it accepts, while the detergent maker specifies how much of that particular formula to use.

Why a top-loader can still be an HE washer
“Top-load” describes where you put the clothing. It does not describe the washer’s water use or detergent requirement. GE Appliances defines HE-labeled top-load washers as machines that use low water levels during washing and rinsing. Some have an impeller or infuser plate instead of a traditional central agitator, while other HE top-load designs may look more familiar. The external shape is therefore an unreliable guide.
How to identify the HE designation
- Look for the HE symbol: a lowercase h and e inside a circle.
- Look in the owner’s manual, control panel documentation or manufacturer support page for “HE,” “High Efficiency” or “low-water” terminology.
- Do not infer detergent type from the presence or absence of a central agitator.
- If the model label and manual disagree with a general rule, follow the model-specific manual.
Some top-load machines have a conventional design and are not HE. Those washers may be intended for regular detergent, although HE detergent can generally be used in them. Confirm the machine’s designation before measuring detergent.
What is different about HE detergent?
HE detergent is formulated to produce fewer suds while still suspending soil in a low-water wash. Foam can look like evidence of stronger cleaning, but in a low-water machine it can interfere with the washer’s sensing, tumbling or agitation and make it harder to remove detergent and soil during rinsing. A conventional formula may assume more water for dilution and rinsing than an HE cycle supplies.

Low-sudsing does not mean “no cleaning power.” It means the formula is intended to work with the machine’s water volume and mechanical action. HE detergent can be liquid, powder or a pod; the physical form does not replace the HE requirement. Read the package for the HE marker and follow its directions for concentration, load size and soil level.
Potential effects of regular detergent in an HE washer
- Excess suds: Foam can persist because the washer has less water available to dilute and carry it away.
- Longer cycles: The washer may add time or additional rinsing while trying to clear the suds.
- Reduced rinsing: Residue may remain on fabrics or in the tub if the cycle cannot remove the foam efficiently.
- Cleaning changes: Too many suds can reduce the mechanical contact between clothing, water and detergent.
- Overflow: Manufacturer guidance identifies overflow as a possible result, not an inevitable outcome of every use.
- Longer-term concerns: A Whirlpool/Maytag guide warns of possible component failure and mold or mildew buildup when non-HE detergent is used. The guidance does not establish that a single mistake will cause either condition.
The exact outcome depends on the washer, formula, dose, load and water conditions. There is no evidence here for a universal failure rate or a guaranteed amount of damage.
Regular detergent versus HE detergent
| Decision point | Regular detergent | Detergent labeled HE |
|---|---|---|
| Package identification | May not show the HE symbol or “High Efficiency” wording. | Shows the HE symbol or explicitly says HE/High Efficiency. |
| Designed water conditions | Typically intended for conventional, higher-water cycles; the specific formula’s instructions control. | Formulated for low-water HE cycles and lower sudsing. |
| Use in an HE top-loader | Not the recommended choice; excess suds and poor rinsing are possible. | Recommended by the cited washer manufacturers, subject to the model manual. |
| Use in a conventional washer | May be accepted when the washer manual calls for regular detergent. | GE Appliances, Whirlpool and Maytag state that HE detergent can also be used in conventional washers, with the amount potentially differing. |
| Independent head-to-head performance result | Not stated in the manufacturer guidance; choose according to the washer manual and product label. | |
This is a compatibility comparison, not an independent laboratory ranking. The sources establish the low-sudsing design and manufacturer recommendations, but they do not provide a universal test showing that one detergent brand or format cleans better than another.

How to choose the right detergent
- Confirm the washer type. Find the model number and verify in the manual whether the top-loader is HE. “Top-load” alone is not enough.
- Check the front and back of the detergent package. Find the HE symbol or the words “HE” or “High Efficiency.” Do not rely on color, scent or the word “concentrated.”
- Read both sets of instructions. Use the washer manual for machine-specific limits and the detergent label for that formula’s dose.
- Match the dose to the load. Concentration, load size and soil level affect the amount. A heavily soiled full load may require a different amount from a small, lightly soiled load.
- Use the dispenser correctly. Follow the manual’s instructions for liquid, powder or single-dose products. Do not pour detergent into a location the manual does not identify.
There is no single dose that is correct for every HE top-loader and every detergent. Whirlpool and Maytag provide examples of about two tablespoons for a normal or medium HE load in some guidance, but that is manufacturer example guidance, not a universal measurement. A concentrated product may require substantially less than another product, so the label for the exact formula takes priority.
What if the detergent is labeled HE but still creates many suds?
The HE symbol is the starting point, not a promise that every formula behaves identically in every machine. Whirlpool’s owner guidance cautions that some natural, organic or homemade detergents can generate high suds even when labeled HE. Ingredients, concentration, water hardness, dose and the size or soil level of the load can all affect foam.
Checks to make
- Verify that the package really identifies the product as HE.
- Measure the amount instead of estimating, and compare it with the label’s instructions.
- Check whether the load is smaller than the dose assumes.
- Review the washer manual for restrictions on detergent type or dispenser use.
- If suds, error codes or rinse problems continue, contact the washer manufacturer or follow its troubleshooting procedure.
Do not “solve” persistent suds by adding another product unless the manual specifically permits it. The safest adjustment is to identify the cause and follow the model’s instructions.

If you already used regular detergent
One accidental use does not prove that the washer is damaged. The cited manufacturer material describes potential consequences, not a certainty after one load. Pay attention to what the machine does and to the condition of the clothing.
- Observe the cycle. Note unusually long operation, visible foam, poor rinsing, an error message or water approaching the lid.
- Use the manual’s response. Look up the model’s instructions for excess suds, overflow or a failed rinse. Do not assume that a generic internet procedure is appropriate for every washer.
- Allow the machine to complete only when safe. If the manual directs you to stop, drain or run a rinse, follow that sequence and its safety warnings.
- Check the next load. Switch to correctly dosed HE detergent and watch for recurring suds or residue.
- Escalate persistent symptoms. Repeated suds, error codes, leaking or continuing rinse problems warrant manufacturer support or a qualified appliance technician.
Avoid making a larger dose of regular detergent “work” by adding more water yourself. The washer’s sensors and programmed water levels are designed around its specified detergent type; manual instructions are more reliable than improvised dilution.

Yes, according to GE Appliances, Whirlpool and Maytag, HE detergent can be used in a conventional washer. The amount may differ because a conventional machine can use a different water volume and cycle design. Follow the conventional washer’s manual and the HE product’s dose directions rather than transferring the amount from an HE cycle.

- DEEP CLEAN FOR SENSITIVE SKIN: Removes more stains than the leading Free detergent while remaining gentle on skin
- FREE OF DYES AND PERFUMES: Formulated without dyes and perfumes to help reduce the risk of irritation
- CERTIFIED BY EXPERTS: Recognized by the NEA, EPA Safer Choice, and NPF for its sensitive skin formula
- WORKS IN ANY MACHINE: Effective in both high efficiency and standard washing machines
- CLEANS IN COLD WATER: Designed to deliver cleaning performance even in cold wash cycles
This one-way flexibility does not make regular detergent equally suitable for an HE machine. HE detergent is designed to limit suds in low-water conditions; regular detergent is not automatically redesigned for that environment.
A practical compatibility checklist
- Is the washer explicitly identified as HE or high efficiency?
- Does the detergent package display the HE symbol or “High Efficiency” wording?
- Does the washer manual permit that detergent format in its dispenser?
- Are you using the amount specified for the product, load size and soil level?
- Are natural, organic or homemade ingredients producing unexpected foam despite an HE label?
- Are persistent suds, residue, error codes or rinse problems being handled through the model’s manual or manufacturer support?
If the answers are yes, the detergent choice and dosing method align with the available manufacturer guidance. If the package lacks an HE designation, choose a detergent that has one before running another load.
