Wood Mackenzie says four-hour battery storage has a lower modeled levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) than a new open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) peaker in all 43 markets where the firm compared the technologies. That is a new-build cost finding—not proof that a four-hour battery can replace a gas plant in every operating condition or provide the same duration of power.
What Wood Mackenzie’s comparison says
In a news release dated 8 October 2026, Wood Mackenzie reported that four-hour storage beats OCGT peaking on LCOE in every one of the 43 markets where both were modeled. The 43 are individual markets, not regions. The firm’s regional LCOE coverage spans Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East and Africa.

LCOE is the cost metric in the headline. The public announcement does not provide enough detail about the full model methodology or included cost items to reconstruct the result independently, so it should not be read as a universal comparison of delivered electricity costs.
Regional figures—and what they do and do not show
Middle East and Africa
Wood Mackenzie puts four-hour storage LCOE in the Middle East and Africa at US$120/MWh in 2026 and forecasts US$80/MWh by 2035, a 33% decline. It says storage is already lower-cost than gas peaking in every gas market in that region. The announcement also cites regional utility-scale solar LCOE of US$37/MWh; that is a separate generation-cost figure, not the cost of storage or a combined solar-plus-storage system.

Asia Pacific
Wood Mackenzie identifies China as the global storage-cost benchmark, at more than 55% below the rest of Asia Pacific’s US$134/MWh average. It attributes China’s lower costs to domestic supply-chain integration and manufacturing scale. The firm forecasts the rest-of-region average to fall to US$92/MWh by 2036, while Japan, Australia, and the Philippines remain at a premium because of import duties, installation costs, and domestic manufacturing policies.
These regional figures illustrate differences in modeled storage costs; they are not prices for every project or direct estimates of the battery-versus-peaker gap in each country.

- One Powers All. The unit of DELTA Pro Ultra whole house generator includes an inverter and a battery. One inverter supports 120V & 240V and has an exceptional 7200W output, allowing you to run almost any heavy household appliance, even a 3-ton central air conditioner. Triple the inverters for an incredible 21.6kW AC output, allowing you to live life to the fullest even during an outage. The electric generator achieves a total 7200W output even during charging.
- Strong Power Security. Scalable from one battery of 6144Wh, two days of essential power, all the way to 15, it multiplies the energy to a gigantic 90kWh. For a standard North American household, that's over 30 days of essential power secured.
- Customize Your Home Power. Use the EcoFlow app to priolritize specific circuits in your home, extending your backup even longer. For more than just blackouts, it intelligently analyses your home power usage to offset peak rates while utilizing solar to lower energy bills.
- Multi Ways to Charge. One battery of 6144Wh can be fully recharged in 2 hours. Faster than any other 6kWh solar generator. Users can choose among electric vehicle piles, solar, wall outlets or outdoor generators for charging.
- Uninterrupted Life. Online UPS with 0-ms transfer time, offering 24/7 protection for sensitive electrical devices against power disturbances or grid failure. All fans are off for the first half hour of outputting 2000W, giving you absolute silence for tranquility in everyday life.
United States
Separately, a Wood Mackenzie spokesperson told Utility Dive that four-hour storage for US projects with 2026 commercial operation is 65% to 75% cheaper than new OCGT peakers, depending on state-level carbon pricing. Utility Dive reported that Wood Mackenzie did not publish exact prices. The percentage is specific to that US project timing and policy qualification, not a fixed ratio for all markets or years.

Wood Mackenzie attributes the change to gas-turbine shortages and fuel-price volatility raising peaking costs as battery manufacturing scales. Principal analyst Ahmed Jameel Abdullah described the shift as “decisive and widening.” He also said: “Gas turbine shortages and rising fuel volatility are driving up peaking costs, while expanding battery manufacturing continues to push storage costs down.” These are the company’s explanations for its modeled result, not independently verified causal findings in the public announcement.

For North America, Utility Dive reported Wood Mackenzie’s view that investment in gas generation is entering “a supply deficit cycle through the late 2030s,” driven by data-center load growth, with thermal capital costs remaining elevated. That is company analysis reported by Utility Dive, rather than a separate finding about battery operating capability.

A lower modeled LCOE for a four-hour battery does not, by itself, show that it can meet every reliability or capacity need served by a peaker. The announcement does not establish that four-hour storage supplies energy through multi-day shortfalls, dispatches in the same way as a gas turbine, or replaces every grid reliability service. Those are broader system-planning questions than the new-build cost comparison answers; this limitation is not evidence that batteries cannot provide such services.

- Duration: The battery case is four hours; the result should not be extended automatically to longer-duration storage or multi-day firming.
- Scope: The comparison is with open-cycle gas peaking, not all gas generation or every grid service.
- Assumptions: Fuel conditions, turbine availability, and—in the reported US comparison—state carbon pricing affect the economics.
- Evidence: The public release does not give the complete modeling assumptions, and the detailed regional reports are not freely described in the announcement.
