Yes—fresh buttercups in the genus Ranunculus can irritate people and poison dogs, cats, horses, and grazing livestock. That does not mean every yellow flower in a yard is a deadly buttercup, or that one plant automatically creates an emergency. The practical response is to identify the plant, keep children and animals from chewing it, wear gloves when removing fresh growth, and contact a poison center or veterinarian if exposure causes symptoms.
The short answer: respect fresh buttercups, but do not panic
Common lawn and pasture buttercups contain ranunculin. When fresh plant tissue is crushed, chewed, or damaged, ranunculin can break down into protoanemonin, an acrid compound that irritates living tissue.

The greatest concern is usually ingestion of fresh leaves and stems—not simply having a flowering plant in the yard. Buttercups are also generally unpalatable, so many animals avoid them. Risk increases when a patch is dense, desirable forage is scarce, animals are overgrazing, or a pet or child deliberately chews the plant.

“Buttercup” is not one precisely identified plant
The common name buttercup applies to several Ranunculus species. It can also be used for unrelated or formerly related lookalikes, including lesser celandine, sometimes called fig buttercup (Ficaria verna, formerly Ranunculus ficaria). Ornamental cultivated Ranunculus hybrids add another complication.
Do not identify a plant from a yellow flower alone. A photograph of the flower, leaves, stem, and overall growth habit is much more useful than flower color. Species identification matters because growth habits, toxicity details, habitat, and control recommendations can differ.
Creeping buttercup (Ranunculus repens)
- A perennial that spreads through above-ground runners called stolons.
- Often forms patches in thin turf and favors wet or poorly drained soil, although it can grow in sun or shade.
- Leaves commonly have three leaflets or three deeply divided lobes and may show pale blotches.
- Stems can be slightly hairy and reddish or purplish near the crown.
- Bright-yellow flowers generally have five to seven overlapping petals and commonly appear in late spring or early summer.
Tall or meadow buttercup (Ranunculus acris)
- An erect, hairy perennial that may reach approximately 1 to 3.5 feet.
- Leaves are divided into narrow lobes.
- Glossy yellow flowers generally have five to seven petals.
- Common in moist meadows, pastures, fields, and disturbed areas.
Smallflower buttercup (Ranunculus abortivus)
- An annual or biennial with slender, branched stems.
- Lower leaves are rounded and palmately veined; upper leaves are divided.
- Small yellow flowers generally have five to seven petals.
- May occur in open woods, poor soils, pastures, and disturbed ground.
Lesser celandine or fig buttercup
Lesser celandine is a separate invasive spring ephemeral that can resemble other buttercups. It often forms dense mats in moist lowlands, floodplains, riverbanks, and lawns. It commonly emerges in March and April and dies back as tree canopies leaf out.
This distinction is important: lesser celandine may require a different control approach, and disturbing a large patch before confirming its identity can spread plant material. If you cannot confidently identify the plant, photograph it and ask a local cooperative-extension office, qualified lawn professional, or plant-identification service.
Why fresh buttercups cause trouble
Ranunculin is the relevant plant glycoside identified by extension, government, and toxicology sources. Crushing or chewing fresh tissue can convert it to protoanemonin, which is highly irritating. Contact with fresh sap can cause burning, blistering, or chemical-like skin injury in susceptible people.

Drying or curing generally reduces or drives off the irritating toxin, which is why fresh plants are more concerning than properly dried material. That does not make dried buttercup automatically safe. Hay may still contain viable seeds, and feed safety depends on the species, amount, curing conditions, animal, and other circumstances. Do not intentionally feed dried buttercup or assume that a wilted plant is harmless.
Possible effects on people
Eating fresh Ranunculus tissue can irritate the mouth, throat, and digestive tract. Possible effects include:
- Burning or irritation of the mouth and throat
- Abdominal discomfort or pain
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Skin redness, burning, or blistering after contact with fresh sap
- Neurologic or other systemic signs after a larger exposure
Human reports more commonly involve irritation and contact injury than frequent severe poisoning. Nevertheless, no one should eat an unidentified yard plant, use fresh buttercup sap on the skin, or allow a child to play with a pulled plant.
If a person may have been exposed
- Move the person away from the plant and remove any material from the mouth.
- Rinse exposed skin with plenty of water. Avoid rubbing fresh sap into the skin.
- If the eyes were exposed, rinse them with clean running water and seek medical advice, especially if pain or vision changes continue.
- For suspected ingestion or significant exposure in the United States, call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222.
- Call 911 for trouble breathing, collapse, seizure, severe swelling, or another emergency sign.
Do not induce vomiting unless a poison specialist or clinician specifically directs you to do so.
Risks to dogs and cats
The ASPCA lists buttercup (Ranunculus species) as toxic to dogs and cats. Its listed toxic principle is protoanemonin. Reported signs include:

- An unsteady gait
If a dog or cat chews buttercup, remove access to the plant and contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service for case-specific instructions. Call promptly rather than waiting for symptoms if the amount eaten is unknown, the animal consumed a large quantity, or a concentrated plant part was involved.
Do not give milk, oil, other home remedies, or medication unless a veterinary professional tells you to. Do not induce vomiting without veterinary direction. Save a photograph or sample of the plant—handled with gloves—and note approximately when and how much the animal may have eaten.
Risks to horses and livestock
Fresh tall and smallflower buttercup can be toxic to horses when eaten in pasture. Reported effects include mouth, skin, and gut blistering; swelling of the face, nose, lips, or skin; diarrhea; and colic. Tremors, seizures, and paralysis are uncommon but possible.
Livestock may develop oral burning, salivation, mouth or throat blistering, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and weakness. Depending on the species and circumstances, severe cases can involve neurologic, kidney, respiratory, or fatal effects. Cattle may show reduced milk production and bitter or red-tinted milk.
Animals often avoid buttercup because it tastes unpleasant, but that is not a dependable safety plan. Risk rises when animals are forced to graze heavily, pasture forage is poor, buttercups are abundant, or an animal develops an unusual craving.

If a horse or livestock animal may have eaten fresh buttercup:
- Remove the animal from the pasture or suspected feed.
- Prevent other animals from accessing the area.
- Call a veterinarian promptly and describe the plant, amount, timing, and symptoms.
- Do not rely on drying, mowing, or the assumption that animals will avoid the plant.
How to remove a small buttercup patch safely
For one or a few plants in a lawn or garden bed, physical removal may be the simplest option. The aim is to protect people and animals while removing enough of the plant to prevent regrowth.
- Confirm the identity first. Photograph the flower, leaves, stems, and growth habit. Look for stolons if creeping buttercup is suspected, and rule out lesser celandine before choosing a control method.
- Keep animals away while the plant is fresh. Use a temporary barrier, leash pets, or block access to the patch. Do not leave pulled plants in a yard-waste pile where a dog, child, or grazing animal can reach them.
- Wear protective gloves. Fresh sap can irritate skin, and gloves provide a sensible barrier during outdoor plant cleanup. For a small patch, homeowners may find gardening gloves for pulling weeds useful; gloves are not a substitute for medical or veterinary advice.
- Pull or dig carefully. Remove as much of the root system and, for creeping buttercup, as many above-ground stolons as practical. A hand weeder tool can help with small lawn or bed infestations, but no tool guarantees complete removal or prevents regrowth.
- Contain the material. Bag fresh plants or place them in a secured yard-waste container. Do not leave them where pets or children can chew them. Avoid placing questionable fresh material in an accessible home compost pile.
- Wash up. Wash gloves, hands, tools, and any exposed skin after the work. Launder clothing if it was heavily contaminated with sap.
Do not burn plant material unless local rules and safe-burning conditions explicitly allow it. Smoke from burning vegetation can irritate the eyes and airways, and burning is unnecessary for ordinary yard cleanup.

A recurring patch is often a symptom of site conditions rather than simply a failure to pull weeds. Creeping buttercup commonly favors thin turf and wet or poorly drained soil. Penn State extension guidance emphasizes:
- Improving turf density
- Correcting drainage problems
- Reducing unnecessary irrigation
- Mowing appropriately
- Selecting turfgrass suited to the site
After removal, improve the growing conditions that allowed the patch to establish. Otherwise, stolon fragments, surviving roots, and new seed may produce another infestation.

When herbicide may be appropriate
Herbicide can be considered for a persistent infestation, but a generic “buttercup killer” recommendation is unsafe. Product legality, turfgrass tolerance, application timing, rate, weather conditions, grazing restrictions, re-entry requirements, pollinator precautions, and state or local rules vary.
Before applying anything:
- Confirm the plant and identify the turfgrass or pasture species.
- Read the current product label—the label determines legal use.
- Check whether the product is labeled for the specific buttercup and site.
- Follow all instructions for children, pets, livestock, water, protective equipment, and re-entry.
- Ask a local extension professional or licensed applicator when identification or product choice is uncertain.
Do not assume a product that is safe on one lawn type is safe on every grass, ornamental plant, pasture, child-accessible area, pet area, or pollinator habitat. For pastures, extension recommendations commonly emphasize early-season control before the pasture turns yellow, along with soil fertility, pH, drainage, grazing management, mowing, and properly timed treatment.
Lawn versus pasture: the response is different
| Situation | Best first response | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One or two plants in a home lawn | Confirm identity, keep pets away, wear gloves, and remove or dig them out. | The exposure risk is usually low if nobody chews the fresh plant, and physical removal may be sufficient. |
| A recurring creeping-buttercup patch | Address drainage, irrigation, thin turf, and mowing; then consider label-compliant treatment if needed. | Correcting site conditions helps reduce regrowth and may be more durable than repeated treatment. |
| A dense pasture infestation | Remove livestock from the affected area and call an agricultural or veterinary professional. | Grazing pressure and poor forage can increase consumption and make exposure more consequential. |
| An unidentified yellow spring mat | Photograph it and confirm whether it is buttercup or lesser celandine before control. | Lookalikes can have different control strategies and growth cycles. |
What not to do
- Do not call every buttercup deadly. Toxicity varies with species, plant part, freshness, dose, and the exposed animal.
- Do not call dried buttercup universally harmless. Toxicity may decline with drying, but viable seeds and feed-safety concerns remain.
- Do not identify the plant by flower color alone.
- Do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy to a person or pet unless a qualified poison or veterinary professional instructs you to.
- Do not apply a lawn herbicide without checking the current label. A product can be unsuitable for the grass, location, season, nearby water, pets, livestock, or local regulations.
- Do not depend on animals avoiding the plant. Overgrazing, poor forage, and unusual consumption can change the risk.

Can touching a buttercup make you sick?
Fresh buttercup sap can irritate skin and may cause burning or blistering in susceptible people. Wear gloves when removing fresh plants, avoid rubbing your face or eyes, and wash exposed skin promptly.
Are buttercups safe after they dry?
Drying generally reduces the irritating toxin, but dried buttercup should not automatically be considered safe. Seeds may remain viable, and feed safety depends on the plant, curing conditions, amount, and animal. Do not intentionally feed it.
Should I remove a buttercup from my lawn?
Usually yes if children, pets, or livestock can access it, especially if the patch is dense. Confirm the identity first, keep animals away, wear gloves, and remove small patches before seed production when practical.
What number should I call if someone eats buttercup?
In the United States, call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 for suspected ingestion or significant exposure. Call 911 for trouble breathing, collapse, seizure, severe swelling, or another emergency sign. Do not induce vomiting unless directed.

The Bottom Line
Buttercups are not a reason to panic over every yellow flower in the lawn, but fresh Ranunculus plants deserve respect. Keep pets and grazing animals from chewing them, do not eat unidentified yard plants, use gloves when pulling a patch, and contact a veterinarian or poison center if exposure causes symptoms.
