Arduino Controlled Smart Hydroponic Modular System: How It Works and How to Build It Safely

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Arduino Controlled Smart Hydroponic Modular System is a real, documented DIY prototype—not a commercially available appliance. Created for a school robotics activity, it combines a six-level PVC growing structure with an Arduino Mega, environmental and water-quality sensors, timed pumps and lights, nutrient dispensing, an Android app, and ThingSpeak data logging.

It is best understood as an educational automation project. The documentation is sufficient to reproduce the general design, but its original parts links, software dependencies, calibration assumptions, electrical arrangements, and unattended-operation safeguards should be reviewed before building a current 2026 version.

What the project is

The project was developed at Juan de Lanuza School as a portable hydroponic installation that could be demonstrated around the school while growing plants throughout the year. Its documented design has three connected parts:

It is not presented as a certified electrical installation, commercial agricultural platform, or independently tested production system. The documentation does not establish long-term uptime, crop yields, dosing accuracy, water savings, or measurement accuracy.

What “modular” means

Here, modularity is primarily physical. PVC growing channels can be stacked into levels, the aluminum frame can theoretically be resized or extended, wheels make the unit portable, and 3D-printed supports hold pots and lighting.

The design should not be assumed to have independently controlled growing zones. The documentation does not establish that each level has its own pump, sensor set, nutrient circuit, or closed-loop controller. In practice, it is a shared recirculating system arranged as a vertical module.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hydroponic method and water path

A safe description of the growing method is a stacked recirculating PVC-channel hydroponic system with a bottom reservoir and pump-driven flow. The source does not clearly classify it as NFT, Dutch bucket, or another modern system type, so those labels should not be applied without independently analyzing the channel geometry and flow.

The general water path is:

  1. Nutrient solution sits in the lower reservoir.
  2. A pump sends solution through flexible tubing to the upper growing channels.
  3. The solution travels through the PVC channels past the plant roots.
  4. Gravity returns it through the lower levels to the reservoir.
  5. The controller switches the pump according to its programmed schedule.

A vertical arrangement introduces practical hydraulic problems. Different tubing lengths, elevation changes, blocked channels, air in the line, pump wear, and poorly balanced connectors can cause one level to receive more flow than another. The original documentation demonstrates the structure but does not provide flow-balancing measurements.

Mechanical construction

The documented materials include approximately:

  • 6 metres of 100 mm PVC tube
  • 2 metres of 40 mm PVC tube
  • PVC reducers, elbows, flexible 10 mm tubing, and PVC adhesive
  • A reservoir or approximately 5-litre water container
  • An aluminum support frame and wood base
  • Four wheels
  • Plant pots and 3D-printed supports for pots and lights

The finished unit has six PVC levels and a lower tank. A practical build should leave access to the reservoir, pump, return path, sensor probes, drain, and every glued joint. Portability is useful for demonstrations, but wheels also make it easier to move a water-filled structure accidentally. Use locking casters and verify that the frame remains stable when the reservoir is full.

Test the water path before installing electronics

  1. Assemble the reservoir, pump, tubing, channels, and return path.
  2. Fill the system with plain water.
  3. Run the pump and confirm that every level receives flow.
  4. Inspect all glued joints, reducers, elbows, and returns for leaks.
  5. Check that the return cannot overflow and that the reservoir does not run dry.
  6. Confirm that the manual drain is accessible and that channels can be cleaned.
  7. Run the system for several hours before adding plants or nutrients.

The expected result is stable recirculation without dry channels, overflowing returns, blocked outlets, leaking joints, or reservoir depletion.

Arduino Mega control hardware

The project uses an Arduino Mega as its central controller because it has enough connections for multiple sensors, serial devices, a display, and relay outputs. The official Arduino Mega 2560 Rev3 specification lists 54 digital I/O pins, 15 PWM-capable pins, 16 analog inputs, four hardware serial ports, a 16 MHz clock, 256 KB of flash, 8 KB of SRAM, 4 KB of EEPROM, and 5 V operation.

The declared assignments in the project code are:

Function Declared connection
LCD RS 51
LCD enable 53
LCD D4–D7 39, 37, 35, 33
DHT22 air sensor Digital pin 2
Dallas/DS18B20 water-temperature bus Digital pin 3
Water pump Digital pin 6
Grow light Digital pin 7
Bluetooth RX3/TX3, as described by the project
ESP8266 Serial communication using AT commands

These are the original project’s declared assignments, not guaranteed wiring instructions for every board, module, relay, or software revision. Check the downloadable sketch, relay polarity, module voltage requirements, grounding, and board revision before applying power.

Sensors and measurements

The documented system measures:

  • Air temperature
  • Air humidity
  • Water temperature
  • pH
  • Electrical conductivity (EC)
  • Time for scheduling and logging

The DHT22 provides air temperature and humidity. A DS18B20-class probe measures water temperature. Separate pH and EC electronics monitor the nutrient solution. The LCD displays measurements locally, while the app and ThingSpeak provide remote access.

Calibration is part of the design

The original code contains calibration values for pH 4, pH 7, and pH 10, along with two conductivity calibration points. Those values are not universal. The documentation warns that the calculations must be changed when different sensors are used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a reproducible build, record:

  1. The probe model and interface-board model
  2. The ADC reference voltage
  3. The calibration solutions and their stated values
  4. The temperature-compensation method
  5. The calibration interval and probe-storage procedure
  6. Whether readings are taken with the pump running or stopped
  7. The filtering or averaging applied to noisy readings
  8. The error state for disconnected or implausible sensors

Analog pH and EC boards are not interchangeable simply because they expose similar output pins. Probe fouling, bubbles, temperature, grounding, electrical noise, and incorrect calibration can all produce misleading readings.

What the Arduino controls

The documented control goals include timed water cycles, timed grow-light operation, sensor polling, pump switching, pH monitoring, EC-based nutrient action, local display, mobile communication, and cloud data collection.

The nutrient mechanism is particularly important. The project modifies a fish feeder so the Arduino can activate it and release nutrients into the reservoir. The pump is then turned back on so the added material circulates.

This is experimental dispensing, not calibrated liquid dosing. Dry nutrients can clump, bridge, or dispense inconsistently. EC indicates conductivity, not the complete chemical balance required by every crop, and the project provides no evidence of dosing repeatability or biological validation. Before enabling it, calibrate the feeder by dispensing a known quantity repeatedly and measuring the resulting EC change after a defined mixing period.

Electrical system and safety

The source describes a 12-volt supply rated at 3 amps, 12-volt LED grow-light strips drawing approximately 0.5 amp per metre, a pump drawing approximately 1 amp, and about 0.5 amp for the main circuit according to the project’s estimate. These are project-specific estimates, not a universal power budget.

Recalculate the load from the actual pump, lights, feeder, relays, sensors, Wi-Fi hardware, wiring, and startup current. Select a certified supply with reasonable headroom, add appropriate fusing, and keep low-voltage electronics in an enclosed, serviceable case.

The original documentation refers to connection to 220 V through a 12 V supply. That description is not a complete modern electrical-safety procedure. A safer installation should include:

  • Certified, enclosed power hardware appropriate to the installation’s country
  • GFCI/RCD protection where applicable
  • Fuses close to the power source
  • Drip loops and strain relief on every cable entering an enclosure
  • Physical separation between mains wiring, water paths, relays, and metal framing
  • Sealed or suitably protected electronics enclosures
  • Low-voltage loads wherever practical
  • A clearly accessible power disconnect and manual emergency stop

Never connect pumps, LED strips, or feeders directly to Arduino I/O pins. The Mega documentation recommends 20 mA per I/O pin and warns against exceeding absolute maximum ratings. Use properly rated relay modules, MOSFET drivers, flyback protection, and separate load wiring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Software, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and ThingSpeak

The original communications architecture uses two separate links:

  • HC-05 Bluetooth: sends readings to the Android application and receives time updates from the mobile device.
  • ESP8266 Wi-Fi: uses AT commands to send readings to ThingSpeak.

The source describes ThingSpeak uploads at 15-minute intervals. That is periodic remote logging, not unrestricted real-time control. Pump and lighting schedules should operate locally and safely if the phone, Bluetooth pairing, Wi-Fi network, or ThingSpeak service is unavailable.

The project also includes Arduino source code, App Inventor project files, and an Android application file. Treat these as archival starting points. The original APK should not be assumed to install or communicate correctly on current Android versions, and old ESP8266 AT-command workflows may require library, firmware, baud-rate, or serial-interface changes.

The Arduino IDE, Arduino documentation portal, MIT App Inventor, and ThingSpeak are useful current starting points, but compatibility with the original files must be tested rather than assumed.

A sensible reproduction sequence

Phase 1: water path

Build and test the reservoir, channels, pump, tubing, drain, and returns using plain water. Do not add plants, nutrient concentrate, or electronics until recirculation is stable.

Phase 2: low-risk sensing

Add the DHT22, water-temperature probe, LCD, and serial logging. Verify stable readings in plain water. Keep sensor cables away from pump and lighting power cables.

Phase 3: pH and EC

Calibrate each instrument using the appropriate buffers or conductivity standards. Compare readings with the pump off and on. If switching the pump changes readings, investigate grounding, supply noise, cable routing, and filtering before trusting the data.

Phase 4: actuators

Add the pump, lighting, and feeder through correctly rated drivers. Test relay polarity and default states. A restart should not unexpectedly leave a pump or dosing mechanism running.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Phase 5: communications

Connect Bluetooth and Wi-Fi only after local sensing and control work independently. Confirm that a lost network does not stop safe local schedules.

Failure modes the original design does not fully solve

Failure Why a timer alone is insufficient Useful improvement
Empty reservoir The pump can run dry and fail while the schedule continues. Float switch or level sensor with a fail-safe shutdown.
Blocked channel or disconnected return Water can stop reaching plants or overflow elsewhere. Flow sensing, overflow protection, and visual inspection.
Pump failure A relay may switch successfully even when the pump does not move water. Flow sensor or pump-current monitoring.
Probe failure A bad analog value can trigger false dosing. Bounds, averaging, plausibility checks, alarms, and dosing lockout.
Sensor drift pH and EC readings change as probes foul or calibration expires. Scheduled calibration, cleaning, storage, and maintenance records.
Power restoration Outputs may briefly assume unsafe states and the clock may be wrong. Safe boot defaults and a battery-backed real-time clock.
Network loss Cloud monitoring can disappear without indicating a local hardware fault. Local control independent of Wi-Fi and a visible offline alarm.
Uneven flow Stacked channels can receive different amounts of solution. Measure each level’s flow and balance tubing and outlets.
Failed feeder A motor movement does not prove the correct nutrient quantity was delivered. Calibrated dispensing, dose limits, and manual confirmation.

Crop requirements also vary. There is no single pH, EC, temperature, photoperiod, or irrigation schedule that suits every plant. The project should therefore be configured for a selected crop rather than presented as a universal growing recipe.

Build the original design or modernize it?

Architecture Best for Trade-offs
Arduino Mega plus ESP8266 Following the documented design, classroom demonstrations, and projects needing many 5-volt I/O connections. More wiring, two firmware environments, 5/3.3-volt interface concerns, and an aging AT-command networking workflow.
ESP32-class controller Compact systems needing integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, modern libraries, and fewer modules. 3.3-volt logic and a required redesign of the pin map and code; it will not run the Mega sketch unchanged.
Raspberry Pi hybrid Dashboards, cameras, databases, and richer user interfaces. An operating system is less deterministic for pump control. Use a microcontroller or hardware safety layer for critical outputs.
PLC or industrial controller Greater electrical robustness and industrial I/O. Higher cost and more complexity than most school prototypes require.
Manual controller Low-cost operation with fewer failure points. No remote monitoring or automatic scheduling.

Keep the Mega if the educational goal is to teach discrete wiring, multiple serial ports, 5-volt peripherals, and local embedded control. Modernize to an ESP32-class board when integrated wireless connectivity, smaller enclosures, OTA updates, lower component count, and modern cloud or MQTT libraries matter more than strict reproduction.

Modern bill-of-materials categories

A current build should separate exact-match parts from modern replacements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Structure: PVC channels, fittings, tubing, reservoir, frame, base, wheels, pots, supports, adhesive, drain hardware.
  • Controller: Arduino Mega for historical fidelity, or an ESP32-class board for integrated wireless.
  • Sensors: air temperature/humidity, waterproof water temperature, pH, EC, and ideally water level.
  • Actuators: continuous-duty pump, low-voltage grow lights, protected drivers, and a calibrated dosing mechanism.
  • Power and protection: certified supply, fuses, enclosure, cable glands, drip loops, disconnect, and applicable RCD/GFCI protection.
  • Calibration and consumables: pH 4/7/10 buffers, EC standards, probe-storage solution, and a complete hydroponic nutrient formula.
  • Networking: ESP8266 and ThingSpeak for close reproduction, or integrated Wi-Fi with a local dashboard, MQTT, or home-automation platform.

The Atlas Scientific industrial pH probe and EZO pH circuit illustrate a more structured instrumentation path, but a better probe does not compensate for poor calibration, grounding, maintenance, or software. Premium instrumentation may be excessive for a classroom demonstration.

Do not rely on a current total project price from the original parts list. Vendor links, taxes, shipping, availability, and replacement choices vary, and the documentation does not provide a dependable 2026 build total.

How “smart” is it?

“Smart” in this project means sensor-assisted automation, timed control, remote viewing, and EC-triggered nutrient dispensing. It does not mean artificial intelligence or autonomous crop management.

Similarly, claims such as lower water use or higher yields should not be treated as measured results from this installation. The project describes general hydroponic benefits, but it does not supply controlled comparisons proving those outcomes for this particular build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical verdict

The Arduino Controlled Smart Hydroponic Modular System is a strong teaching and prototyping project because it connects mechanical construction, fluid handling, electronics, sensor calibration, embedded programming, mobile interfaces, and IoT logging in one visible system.

For a close reproduction, follow the documented Mega pin map and two-module communications architecture only after checking current hardware and software compatibility. For a dependable 2026 installation, retain the concept but add level and flow protection, safer power hardware, a real-time clock, sensor fault handling, dosing limits, independent local control, and a maintainable wireless architecture.
