The plan was featured in WOOD Issue 133 in June 2001; WOOD Store says its listing was updated January 16, 2024. Its listing does not state a numeric load rating, so the promotional description of its arched construction should not be treated as proof of capacity.
What are the dimensions and materials?
WOOD Store lists the bridge as 36 inches wide and spanning 97 inches. Its description pairs cedar components with copper spindles made from common 3/4-inch plumbing pipe and copper post tops. WOOD Store describes the design this way: “Our design features arched construction for appearance and strength.” That is the publisher’s promotional wording, not an independently verified structural assessment or load test. What tools does the plan call for?
The plan retailer’s listing names a drill, clamps, table saw, circular saw, router, and common hand tools. It does not specify tool brands or models. WOODworkersWorkshop says its plan formats include building instructions and finishing guidelines, as well as a full materials and supplies list. What should you check before building outdoors?
Use the lumber, fasteners, and construction details specified by the actual bridge plan, and confirm they suit the site and local requirements. For treated lumber, check its treatment label and the fastener or connector manufacturer’s compatibility guidance rather than assuming any generic screw or bolt will work.

The American Wood Council’s prescriptive residential deck guidance says weather-exposed lumber should be naturally durable or preservative treated as appropriate; wood in contact with the ground should use approved ground-contact-rated treatment. For preservative-treated wood, its guide lists corrosion-resistant fastener and connector options including hot-dip galvanized, stainless steel, silicon bronze, and copper. How does the 5-foot plan compare?
Other arched bridge plans are separate designs, and their dimensions, cut lists, materials, and use statements should not be substituted for the WOOD Magazine plan.

When comparing plans, check finished span and width, arch and rail layout, whether full-size templates and a complete cut or materials list are included, required tools and skills, and any stated traffic or load limits. If the bridge will cross a drainage feature or watercourse, account for the site conditions and applicable local requirements; dimensions or appearance alone do not establish suitability.

The WOOD Store listing reviewed for this article does not state a numeric load rating. Its “appearance and strength” description is not a load test or engineering rating. Do not infer a safe capacity from the arch or borrow the separate Woodcraft plan’s “normal pedestrian traffic” statement. If a project requires a known capacity, obtain design guidance appropriate to the bridge, its supports, materials, and site before building or putting it into service.
